Learning to understand our fellow members and leaders is one of the best things we can do in Toastmasters to maintain club membership. This presentation speaks to one of the most effective ways to accomplish that goal. While this deck was prepared for Toastmasters, it may be applied in many other business and personal environments.
This deck was presented at the Toastmaster's District 45 Fall Conference on Prince Edward Island, Canada on October 25, 2014.

Snowball and Napoleon in Animal Farm both use persuasive speeches to motivate the other animals, but for different reasons. Snowball genuinely wants to educate the animals and further the animal revolution, hoping to build a society where all animals are equal. In contrast, Napoleon's true motivation is personal power and control. He wants to dominate the farm and consolidate his authority. While Snowball appeals to the animals' sense of justice and idealism, Napoleon manipulates their fears and insecurities to strengthen his own position as leader. Their divergent motivations - idealism versus selfish ambition - shape how each pig approaches public speaking and rallying the support of their listeners.

People create, manipulate, and use verbal and nonverbal symbols as tools to achieve their goals, and communication allows people to accomplish these goals. The communication process involves a source encoding a message and transmitting it through a channel to be received and decoded by the intended audience. There may be feedback from the receiver in response to the message. Barriers can occur at each stage of the process.

Kaleb Loosbrock is a UX researcher, designer, and strategist who gave a presentation on user research. He discussed how Americans often lie in social interactions, citing a study finding 60% lie within 10 minutes of meeting someone. He then covered best practices for user research, including the "4 Ds" - define goals and assumptions, disarm interviewees, decipher unspoken meanings, and back claims with data. The presentation emphasized minimizing risks through research planning and understanding users beyond their words.
