1. Being an ALLY
as a teacher
How to let your black and queer students know they matter to you
2. PSA
You obviously care about your students, if you didn’t you would be looking at this, but it is
important to make sure that they know how much you care. When your students come to
you with a problem they don’t understand, because of how much you care, you guide
them, listen to them, and are patient with them. Apply that same love and care to being an
ally. Your students are having a problem, racism or homophobia, etc;..., and they need
your help for guidance, patience, and someone who listens. It will be uncomfortable at
times but that’s okay, because it is worth it.
Just remember: Being an ally is hard but being queer, being black, being a minority is
harder.
4. You are in one of the greatest positions of power a person could be in. You
shape how these students feel about themselves, you set them up to either
fail or succeed, you play one of the most important roles in a child's life. You
have to understand that you are in a major position of power for these kids,
especially your black and queer students. Don’t take this privilege lightly. If
these kids see that you don’t care about or respect them, they won’t care
about or respect themselves. Before doing anything you have to
understand the presence of this power structure or your students will be the
ones to suffer. You have privilege, please use it wisely.
