Web 2.0 2001–PresentAssignment OverviewIt is a truism in the st.docxdavieec5f
Web 2.0: 2001–Present
Assignment Overview
It is a truism in the study of human technology that any tool that gets the public’s attention will eventually be used for purposes entirely unforeseen by its inventor(s) and probably contrary to the general public interest. This has certainly been the case with information technologies and the Internet. E-mail is great, but spam is not. Online video of the grandkids is wonderful; online pornography accessible to little Johnny, not so much. Despite much breast beating, it is difficult to have the good without the bad—and even differentiating the good from the bad is often a matter of opinion. As
Miles’ Law
says, “Where you stand depends upon where you sit.”
Recently, we have become so saturated with and dependent upon social media such as Facebook and Twitter that we have not always noticed the potential “dark side”—most specifically, the ability to use these tools not only to connect individuals in cyberspace but also to mobilize groups for action in the real world. One example is the “flash mob”—defined most generally as a group of people voluntarily assembled at a particular place and time for a particular purpose, coordinated through shared access to social media. This is not altogether a new invention—the telephone and, before that, the telegraph or even a good strong voice have been tools for assembling flash mobs in the past. But what has been recently discovered is how easy it is using modern social media, and how effective such mobs can be.
As we said, whether or not you consider this to be a good development or a bad development depends a lot on how you evaluate the purpose of the mob. Public assemblies to install democracy in an authoritarian state sound pretty good; assembling gang members to break windows and burn cars would not strike most of us as all that great. Here is a sampling of different points of view on this general subject:

Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.

RMD24 | Debunking the non-endemic revenue myth Marvin Vacquier Droop | First ...BBPMedia1

(con’t) Who: @wreichard suggested I look at #CrisisCommons and wondered
if his twitterverse might be interested in starting a CrisisCamp in ABQ.
Losranchosem – Jeff
When: Shortly after the Haiti earthquake. Will started the google site
Phillips http://sites.google.com/site/crisiscampabq/home on January 23rd to
gage interest and get people to sign up.
Where: I live and work as the Emergency Management Coordinator
(volunteer) for the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, NM
Why: I have always believed that emergency management is first and
foremost about "the network." I believe that people want to help but
government doesn't do a very good job of engaging people before,
during or after emergencies and disasters. Web 2.0 is changing that
through twitter and facebook and others. This is a perfect win-win for
EM practitioners and interested public.
How: Through regular virtual collaboration using all the tools available
and periodic in-person meetings we have gotten the concept of
#CrisisCampNM this far and I believe the same approach will set us up
to enhance New Mexico's capabilities (emergency preparedness) and
actual response to and recovery from emergencies and disasters.
14. Nov 30, 2010
Me:
Inception Best practices are always on my mind as I am passionate about preparedness
(con’t) and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. Had been Tweeting
Haiti, following Crisis Camps & developers and had a Connection with
@Los_Alamos on Twitter the 21St of Jan when I was at The Midwest
Dawn Dawson Disaster 2.0 conference in Ks as he apparently noticed my Tweets and
initiated a conversation. My main interest is in how communities might be
@northlandfox integrated into one live type of Digital Age Mitigation network.
@Los_Alamos actually How we prepare for and reduce the effects of disasters by integrating Social
Media & utilizing Virtual Venues for a "Best Practice" model. Have been
@LosRanchosNM Marketing Coordinator for C.E.R.T. Community Emergency Response Team
in Eastern Jackson County Mo at the EOC for the past year. Current MRC
showing how Public Information Specialist & I volunteer at 7 different agencies which
unacquainted we were gives me a wide variety of experience. I retired in 1994 . . .My area in Mo
(where I live) is holding back and reluctant. Ks, Johnson Co, is in the
at the time. Forefront. When I say Metro it's an 8 County area 3 on the Kansas side and 5
in Missouri and I operate in all.
The connection with the individuals I met on Twitter in New Mexico and the
parallel ideas was really uncanny. Knowing New Mexico's Mission is: "To
foster, promote, & implement an EM program that protects New Mexico
citizens & communities from effects of emergencies & disasters" just sold me
on wanting to collaborate with this unique concept.
