Ghost Ship Textual Inspirations
We used narrative enigma much like that in Ghost Ship in
our clip. The audience was unsure of what was happening
within our film. This created an active audience which had
to make their own speculations and investigate the scene
themselves instead of being presented with the information.
This made the experience more scary for the audience as
they become more attached to the characters and began to
identify with them; especially as out film contained young
actresses which our target audience would identify with as
they are of similar age. We also used an increasing pace of
editing in our clip much like in Ghost Ship to build up the
suspense towards the climax of the clip.
American Horror Story Textual Inspirations
We used eerie and unsettling music in our film as
American Horror Story, in fact we used the same music for
our clip. We found that the clip sounded very mechanical
which fit in with the theme of the asylum where our film
was set. The music also had changing volume which helped
to make it synchronous to the clips we filmed; the volume
of the music increased in the most dramatic events in the
clip adding to the effect and scare factor of these moments
to the audience. After adding the music track to the
sequence we decided there was no need for any extra non
diegetic sound in the clip and we erased all diegetic sound
completely.
The Ring Textual Inspirations
From our textual analysis of The Ring we decided to only
use female characters whom were young (teenagers). We
decided this to go against the stereotypical conventions of
horror and create horror which would appeal to the female
audience. Females are often undermined, sexualised and
victimised in the horror genre therefore seeing a new
powerful female protagonist in a predominantly male
dominated genre would create a positive role model for
young females who can identify with the character. The
audience identification factor also impacted our decision as
the fact that the actresses were of a similar age to the target
audience would make the film a scarier experience for the
audience.
Sinister Textual Inspirations
From Sinister we extracted the idea to have CCTV clips
incorporated in our film. Sinister contained ‘home made’
clips which inspired us to create the CCTV scenes which
were creepy as the audience felt like they were watching the
protagonist but someone else was also watching them. It
also fit the theme of out film which was themed around the
Asylum in which it took place. We used effects such as Bad
Film and Grain overlays to create this effect and add a
sense of voyeurism which is a common convention of
horror movies. We also used long shots for the corridor
CCTV scene like Sinister to give the audience a large area to
view as they will expect things to appear but will not know
where from, keeping them at the edge of their seats.
Woman In Black Textual Inspirations
From the Woman In Black we used the idea that the
protagonists of the clip do not have control of their body.
Although the main character in our film seems to be moving
freely each scene shows how in some way she is being controlled
by the evil entity which follows her. This also relates to the sense
of oppression which was represented in Woman In Black. As it
is also later revealed the whole sequence was a dream,
connoting that not only is the character haunted and controlled
by an evil spirit but she is also trapped by her own mind. We
also used the idea of clothing colour connotations in our film as
we wanted to confuse the audience we presented the evil entity
in white clothing symbolising innocence while the protagonist
was dressed in black connoting death and darkness.
Halloween Textual Inspirations
The textual inspirations we took from Halloween included
using the POV of antagonist in the sequence. The use of
POV shots from the antagonist are a common horror
convention however out film challenges this by revealing
out antagonist much earlier in the film. These point of view
shots create a sense of unease and fear for the audience ad
the protagonist is being observed. This use of voyeurism is
a typical convention of horror movies. This also adds
suspense to the clip as the audience is unsure of what the
antagonists actions will be compared to the protagonists
actions which can be predictable and make the audience
feel safer.
