How Much Sugar Is Bad
Sugar is not created equal.
Because sugar comes with natural and artificial, sugar can be bad with how much you get it.
Everything is a toxin. It is matter of amount. water can be deadly if you drink 2 litters in one sitting,
or 10 for the day.vitamins can be bad for you. Especially the kind that stays in the fat.Consuming
large amount of sugar is bad, but that isn't any new information.
For the last month, I did not feel good when I woke up. I had no energy, no ability to think, and I felt
I was dead inside. I had breakfast every day too. yesterday, I decided to eat a cookie.and I felt really
good. O was tired, but I at least had energy, and I was thinking more clearly. So having too much
sugar is bad, but not having sugar in your system even

Synthesis Of Dulcin Synthesis
Introduction
There is a demand for artificial sweeteners because people want to control their intake of sugar.
Saccharin, cyclamates, aspartame, as well as Dulcin, are some sugars that fulfill the need for
sweeteners to be of low caloric content. Some of the sweeteners, such as Dulcin, are now considered
to yield undesirable health effects with long term use. Dulcin is 250 times sweeter than table sugar.
The synthesis of Dulcin was done in order to calculate the percent yield. The lesson of this
experiment was to learn how to synthesize Dulcin from phenetidine and potassium cyanate
(KOCN). During the experiment, Dulcin was synthezided in the presence of water and acetic acid,
which were the solvents. Hydrocyanic acid (HOCN) was formed from the acetic acid and KOCN
(Scheme 1 equation 1). Then the HOCN will react with phenetidine to make Dulcin (Scheme 1
equation 2).
Scheme 1: Steps in Dulcin Synthesis. The apparatus used was the vacuum filtration, which is faster
than the gravity filtration and can only be used with a Büchner funnel. When using the Büchner
funnel, a filter paper needs to be inside of the funnel, as well as, a rubber stopper placed on the
funnel to guarantee a good seal. After the experiment was completed, a pure sample of Dulcin was
obtained because the exact melting point was determined to be 171.5–172.1°C while the literature
value was 173–174°C which is a narrow range. The Rf values also support the reasoning that Dulcin
is pure because the Rf value for

Diet Pop And Its Effects On Human Health
Introduction
Many people have faced problems in deciding which pop to drink, regular or diet. People have
different opinions on the reasons why they prefer one particular pop to another. Through various
researches done all over the world, people have tried to figure out specific causes of ailments
especially those thought to be associated with food. As an avid pop drinker, the need to know the
best pop option has made me curious about how big of a difference there is. It is important to know
the components of each of these pops and decide on the one that has the least side effects or harm on
human health (Brownell et al, 2007). Diet pop contains aspartame, which is a sweetener although it
is non–sugar. Diet pop is consumed worldwide.
At temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, the aspartame in diet pop changes to phermeldahide.
This is a chemical substance that is used as a freezing agent in mortuaries. Consumption of this
chemical substance in large amounts is vital to human health and can cause cancer, severe ailments,
brain tumors, lymphoma, and brain lesions. On the other hand, regular pop contains a small
percentage of sugar. The human brain requires sugar for proper functioning. Consumption of large
amounts of sugar may also be dangerous but regular pop, consumed in controlled amounts, does not
contain enough sugar to pose health threats to individuals.
Purpose of the study
The primary purpose of this paper is to decide which type of pop is better for our bodies.

High Fructose Ry Sweeteners
Sugar–it is that deliciously sweet white substance that we just can't seem to resist. It is a guilty
pleasure that is known by almost everyone to be unhealthy, but is sugar actually a chronic toxin? Is
it slowly killing us from the inside out? In recent years, more and more research seems to suggest
so. With the increasing epidemic of obesity and diabetes, scientists are looking for answers, and
their findings are quite disturbing. If sugar is a toxin, then people need to know because health and
lives are at stake and the sugar industry could fall apart. To answer the question about the toxicity of
sugar, one must be clear about what type of sugar is being discussed because there are many
different types. This essay will discuss high fructose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to L. Bell, studies show that the sugar fructose in high fructose corn syrup messes up the
appetite controls, causing a person to not realize that they are full even though they ate the energy–
dense fructose (L. Bell, 2013). This overeating can lead to weight gain, which can in turn lead to
other serious health problems. According to a study published in the International Journal of Obesity
(2013) "High SSB [fructose–rich sugar–sweetened beverages] consumption has a notable effect on
increased levels of BMI [body mass index] and SUA [serum uric acid]" (W.T. Lin, H.L. Huang,
M.C. Huang, T.F. Chan, S.Y. Ciou, C.Y. Lee, Y.W. Ciou, T.H. Duh, P.L. Lin, T.N. Wang, T.Y. Liu,
and C.H. Lee, 2013, p. 532). In other words, the consumption of beverages sweetened with high
fructose corn syrup significantly increases levels of body mass index and the production of uric acid.
Uric acid is harmful because it can lead to kidney disease and gout, the painful inflammation of the
joints because of all of the extra uric acid circulating in the blood. Another concern about fructose is
how it effects the liver. Every cell in the body can use glucose to make energy, but only the liver can
break down fructose. When fructose is eaten, it must pass through the liver to be broken down.
According to R. Lustig, once it gets to the mitochondria, the power plant of the cell,

Marketing Analysis : Coca Cola
Marketing event 2014
Coca–Cola Company released its new product in early September 2014 called Coca–Cola Life and
with it, launched a marketing campaign in order to promote it and raise awareness of the customers.
Coca–Cola Life is aimed at adults and the aim of the product is to tackle obesity with lower sugar
and calorie levels. The packaging is changed to green which is much different from the typical red
colour of Coca–Cola's main product. In order to analyse this marketing event, relevance to
marketing, issues to marketing and key players need to be identified in order to cover all the aspects
of the marketing event.
Coca–Cola Life launch is relevant to marketing event because Cola–Cola Company wants to

Looking at these strategies Coca–Cola is trying to catch people's attention at as many locations in
UK possible and to point out the properties of Coca–Cola life as it is supposed to be a healthier
version of the original Coca–Cola product in the. The relevance to marketing that this campaign is
making is that it's focused on wide range of above the line advertising in order to raise awareness.
When looking at the marketing campaign some issues have to be pointed out in ordered to improve
it, specifically in this case an issue that is raised that Coca–Cola is introducing 60% less sugar and
calories to this new product and is a part of the movement to tackle obesity, yet the price of the
product remains the same even though less ingredients are used in order to produce it. According to
Tom Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, Coca–Cola should really reduce its price if it wants its
consumers to believe that coke will actually contribute to a healthier diet and not continue keeping
its profit levels (Huffington 2014). On the other hand there are some that don't support the product at
all and consider it to be very bad for one's health. Jaude Lovell, who is a scientist and owns a
website that spreads the awareness in the science community, pointed out that Coca–Cola life's
green packaging sends a message to consumers that coke is actually good for them., whereas in her
opinion is has very unhealthy properties. Mrs. Lovell explains that there is around

Botanical explanation:
Stevia is member of Asteriaceae family which has 200 genus. Its height up to 1 m tall. It is a
perennial herbaceous plant having extensive root system. Its leaves are sessile, 3–4 cm in length,
elongate lanceolate or spatulate shaped with blunt–tipped lamina, serrate tip. The upper surface of
the leaf is granular. Its stem is woody and weak at the bottom. The flowers are pentamerous, small
and whitish. They are surrounded by an involucre of epicalyx. The capitula are loose, irregular and
sympodial Cymes. The fruit is a five ridged spindle shaped achene.
Stevia will grow well on moist and well–drained soil. Plants under cultivation can reach up to 1 m
or more in height. It is cultivated as a perennial shrubby plant in subtropical regions including some
states of the USA. The plant is primarily originated from the northern regions of South America. It
is also cultivated in China, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, Brazil, and Malaysia. Stevia must be cultivated
as an annual plant in high latitude areas, where longer days are favorable for leaf yield and
stevioside contents. Seeds are contained in slender achene, about 3 mm long.

Sugar
There are many disadvantages of eating or drinking things with sugar in it. Consuming too much
can sometimes lead to Type 2 Diabetes or sometimes help cancer form in organs. It also makes teeth
weak. Now a days there are drinks such as Gatorade, Propel, Soda that contain added sugar in them.
Also there is too much food that have added sugar in today 's world. Many people don 't see the
down side of sugar. This paper will inform more people about how harmful sugar can be.

1. What can sugar do to organs? Sugar can make organs fat because fructose, which is in sugar,
makes livers and other organs store fat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every time it 's consumed it can decay gums and teeth without anyone knowing it. That 's what the
advertisements don 't tell (11 Things).
5. Can sugar cause Diabetes? It can raise the chances of having Type 2 Diabetes but don 't worry,
there are multiple factors that are needed to decide that. Eating to much sugar can raise blood
pressure which can lead to it, but alone it can 't "cause" it (How Much is Too Much?).
6. Can sugar affect growth? Like Diabetes sugar alone can 't stunt the growth of a child, but it can if
all the pieces come together. If a child eats a lot of food or drinks with sugar in it, it can cause a lack
of sleep. That means the body doesn 't produce as much growth hormones while they are sleeping.
The best way to avoid it is to have a well balanced diet (Sugar Health). 7. Why do we need sugar?
Since there are so much bad things about sugar, there must be something good right? Well we do
need sugar in order to survive. We must have carbohydrates which are broke down into sugars. They
then create energy to live and move. They are extremely important to life, but they start to have
negative effects when eaten too much (How much is too much?). Krekeler 4
8. Are artificial sweeteners healthier than sugar? Sweeteners are usually made from plants or fruits,
such as Stevia or Erythritol. This means they have little or no calories. They taste just as sweet as
sugar. Sweeteners can also lower blood pressure which is

2) Sugar can damage your heart – According to Journal of the American Heart Association there are
strong evidence that sugar can affect the pumping mechanism of your heart and increase the risk for
heart failure. This is because there are special substances called glucose metabolite glucose 6–

Taking a Look at Stevia
"The leaves of the stevia plant– a small perennial shrub also known as sweet herb– have long been
used as a natural sweetener and herbal medicine in the plant's native South America (Horowitz 36)."
The artificial sweetener Stevia is becoming more popular. Stevia is an herb with about 300 times
more sweetness power than sugar. There are many benefits to stevia such as helping those maintain
a healthy blood pressure, helping diabetic patients and those who are on a low carb and low sugar
controlled diet. "Previously only available as dietary supplements in the United states–because of
theoretical concerns about effects on blood sugar control, renal function, and human cardiovascular
and reproductive systems–highly refined preparations of stevia glycosides are now approved for use
as sugar substitute food additives (Horowitz 36)." A 2 year study was conducted of randomized
patients with mild essential hypertension (Horowitz 36). "Those who took capsules containing 500
mg of stevioside powder 3 times daily had significant decreases in systolic and diastolic blood
pressure, compared to the placebo group (Horowitz 36)". "The quality of life also improved in the
stevioside users, and no significant adverse effects were noted (Horowitz 36)". "Reviews of stevia
also found positive results with respect to glucose tolerance and response (Horowitz 36)". "In one of
these studies, stevia preloads significantly reduced postprandial glucose and insulin levels,

Artificial Sweeteners Should Be Banned
Artificial sweeteners should be banned because of their harmful effects
Kaleb Kassaye
Nova Southeastern University
[Comp 1050 EV2: Kevin Dvorak] The use of artificial sweeteners in beverages and food has been
on a steady rise since 1969, the year it was authorized in the United States of America. The
popularity of artificial sweeteners has been on a rise because of the benefit that it is a zero calorie
sweetener .Even though artificial sweeteners have some great benefits many scientists believe that it
causes adverse effects such as cancer, weight gain and depression. I strongly believe that consumers
are not aware of the side effects of artificial sweeteners hence the increase in consumption since
1969.
Through extensive research, scientists have concluded that artificial sweeteners are carcinogenic; a
cancer causing agent. Scientific research has revealed that cyclamate in combination with saccharin,
the two main ingredients in artificial sweeteners, caused bladder cancer in laboratory rats. Though
test where not done on humans scientist believe that the long–term effect of using artificial
sweeteners would lead to the same complications in humans. Amino acids are biologically important
organic compounds composed of amine and carboxylic acid functional groups. The human body
needs amino acids to thrive. It is documented that ingestion of high amounts of artificial amino acids
found in artificial sweeteners can have adverse effects on the human body such as cancer.

Are Ants More Attracted To Stevia
Are ants more attracted to stevia or sugar? Sugar is a sweet–tasting, crystalline compound. This
natural substance is most commonly obtained from sugar cane and sugar beet plants. Stevia,
C44H70O23, is an even sweeter, non–caloric sweetener, which naturally grows in the form of a leaf.
It was discovered more than two–hundred years ago, in South America. The hypothesis of an
experiment declares that if one placed two dishes (one with an ounce of stevia, and one with an
ounce of sugar) outside, then ants would be more attracted to the stevia. Ants could either be more
attracted to stevia or sugar, depending on the differences between the substances, the components'
sweetness, and the experiment day's climate. Sugar is classified as a carbohydrate, making it an
important source and provider of energy. Carbohydrates can be further separated into three sections:
sugars, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. Additionally, sugars can be classified as the
following: monosaccharides; disaccharides and polyols. Common monosaccharides, individual units
of sugar, are glucose, fructose, and galactose, whereas some ordinary disaccharides, two bonded
units of sugar, are sucrose, lactose, and maltose. In the comparison of sugar and stevia, sucrose will
be used, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The origin of stevia is from two main glycosides, stevioside and rebaudioside A. Steviol glycosides,
found in the leaves, are, most simply, the different sweet–tasting components. "Rebaudioside A is
the sweetest (350–450 times the sweetness of table sugar) and least bitter part of the leaf, while
stevioside (250–300 times the sweetness of table sugar) has that bitter aftertaste many people
complain about (Elya)." Stevioside is over twice as common, in leaves, as rebaudioside A. Only
about 3% of each stevia leaf is made up of rebaudioside A. While still being generally sweeter than
sucrose (table sugar), stevia remains

NUTRASTWEET IN CHINA CASE
By: Andres Jimenez (Session1)
Raymond Nicolai (Session 3)
Fernando Medina (Session 1)
To come up with a decision to the whether enter the Greater China Market or not we decided to
approach the case with a SWOT analysis.
Strengths
NutraSweet is an artificial sweetener that is one of the most recognized brand names in the United
States and in the world. NutraSweet's earnings per share is $ 6.36 and with huge capitalization and
investments in diverse products. Stacey has the approved budget of $ 500,000 to market NutraSweet
in China. NutraSweet has the flexibility on how to position their product in terms of functionality, or

There are only very few foreign agents that operate in China. Sugar use and consumption levels
differed among 3 key markets –Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Beijing. Arthur Andersen survey in
China showed that most joint ventures from food and drink were not profitable. Most MNCs in
China are unprofitable despite substantial growth. Majority of the Chinese are considered "flat–
bellied" and don't see the need for a diet regimen. The Chinese culture also dictates that they are not
that concerned with their teeth, hence they don't have that fear of tooth decay.
The company should enter the Greater China market as a niche product for consumers with a
medical need.
The company cannot delay its entry in the China market, especially with factors such as an average
of 10% economic growth, a quickly emerging middle class, and a high possibility in consumers'
increase purchasing power. Postponement of entry may mean higher costs in the future and although
the company will not immediately profit from the venture, research showed that companies who
entered the market 5 to 10 years ago were doing best. The knowledge gained from market entry will
allow NutraSweet to sharpen its future strategies.
Pros
The successful experience in establishing medical awareness in Hong Kong may be applied to the
Greater China Market. Entering the Greater China market through the three key cities will provide a
better knowledge of the overall Chinese market. A natural market consisting of diabetics and

Why Do Different Sugars Have On Meringue?
Do you love meringues but are diabetic? Some people aren't able to eat specific sugars so they can't
enjoy simple desserts. I've been thinking about this, so I decided to do an experiment with this. What
effect does different sugars have on meringues? Diabetic people can have some types of sugars, so
they're allowed to use alternatives like Stevia instead in meringues. What exactly is a meringue?
Meringues are normally a French dessert made of whipped egg whites and typically caster sugar. It
also has a Swiss and Italian origin. A lot of patience is required to make these, as you have to whip
the egg whites until the sugar dissolves and you have to bake them overnight. You can not rush
making these. However, when you take a bite into the sweet, light dessert, it will have been worth it.
Stevia is often used as a sugar substitute, but how is it different from sugar? As most people know,
sugar has calories. To be exact, there is about 48 calories in a tablespoon. However, Stevia is
harvested from the plant 'stevia rebaudiana'. Stevia is 30 times sweeter than sugar in its refined form
and in its raw state, it's almost 300 times sweeter than sugar! Stevia also has health benefits, like
lowering your blood pressure, and more. Nonetheless, too much Stevia can be bad for you. Diabetes
is a huge problem as many people are affected by diabetes. ... Show more content on

for people with diabetes to eat Stevia, as sugar could raise their blood pressure. Stevia is probably
going to work in meringue, as it doesn't affect the outcome of cakes and such, but it'll probably

Think of the countless times at a restaurant you have been put on the spot to choose a beverage once

possibly harmful affects it may have on your body outweigh the number of calories you may be

Therefore, aspartame (APM) in diet soda can lead to cancer and the risk of developing carcinogenic
effects increase in those who have a life span exposure to APM.
In addition to aspartame in diet soda contributing to cancer, it also causes memory loss. Carbonated
beverages began containing aspartame in 1983, after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
approved it (Gold, 1995). Aspartame contains 40% aspartic acid, which is an amino acid that
increases the level of aspartate and glutamate in blood plasma, according to Gold (1995). This
increase of aspartate, as explained by Gold (1995), causes over stimulation of the nerves by acting
within the brain as neurotransmitters, which aid in sending and receiving information between
neurons. Aspartate increases the possibility of destroying the cell surface's membrane on the
opposite side of the area between nerve cells (where transmission of nerve impulses occur) in the
brain (Humphries, Prestorius, & Naude, 2008). As a result, excessive aspartate or glutamate can
slowly destroy neurons in the brain contributed by an influx of calcium contained in the cells, thus
causing memory loss.
Besides diet soda developing an effect on memory loss, the aspartame in diet soda can lead to
weight gain. Mehl–Madrona, (2005), as cited in Humphries et al. (2008) explains how ingestion of
aspartame can cause cravings for consumption of

Stevia Rebaudiana: A Natural Alternative to Sugar
Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) a perennial herb, belongs to Asteraceae family which including 230
species. Among these 230 species only two species produce sweet steviol glycosides(Soejarto et al.
1982; Kinghorn et al. 1984). Stevia is native to the Paraguay and distributed from south west united
states southward through Mexico and central America. It also occurs in the neighbouring parts of
Brazil, Korea, Tanzania , indonesia, Canada and India (Lee et al. 1979; Donalisio et al. 1982; Shock
1982; Goenadi 1983; Saxena and Ming 1988; Brandle and Rosa 1992; Fors 1995). (Soejarto, 2002).
With the increasing demands for natural products, stevia cultivation extended to many regions of
India including Rajasthan, Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa and Himachal Pradesh (Goyal et al. 2010).
Diterepene steviol glycosides content varies between 4–20% of the dry weight of the dry weight of
the leaves depending on the growing and cultivator conditions
. (Geuns, 2003 ) . more than 100 steviol glycosides compound have been identified in stevia , best
known from which Stevioside and Rebaudioside A. Both stevioside and rebaudioside are
commercially most imperative due to its zero glycemic index and sweetening index of its herbal
extract is as that as of aspartame (Cardello et al. 1999) i.e. 200–300 times sweeter than that of

The Importance Of Artificial Sugar
Glucose is a necessary nutrient to our bodies. Glucose help our brain, muscles, and tissues, without
it the body cannot function. Artificial sugar is chemically processed and used in placed of sugar.
Artificial sugar is usually used less in food, candies and drinks, because it tends to be 200–600 times
sweeter than natural sugar. The artificial sweeteners have become a controversy, continuously being
linked to cancer, diabetes and recently the function of the nervous system (brain). The use of sugar
and artificial sugar in certain beverages or food has to be approved by the FDA (Food and Drug
Administration). Is the FDA approving something beneficial or harmful to us?
Artificial sweetener is a substance that replaces sugar. (Wax, 2015) Replacing sugar can have a
dramatic effect on how our body uses it. Sugar gives our body energy and keeps our cells
functioning. (WSRO, 2012) There are six natural sugars that are found in our daily food, these are
alright for the body to use in moderation. Glucose, Fructose, Galactose, Lactose, Sucrose, Maltose,
even though these are natural sugars found in our food, our body does reject some of these. For
instance, Lactose, many people become lactose intolerant and are not able to digest it because they
are missing the enzyme lactase. (WSRO, 2012)
Glucose is the most common form of sugar, this is what the cells use to help our brain and muscles
function. (Dictionary, 2005) Glucose is the only fuel that the brain can use. (Freeman, 2002)

Natural Sweetener Vs Natural Sugar
Artificial Sweetener vs. Natural Sugar
Is there anything "SWEET" about artificial sugar? Well, over the years there have been many
different kinds of sweeteners that have been tested in labs to see how they affect our bodies. The
first big artificial sweetener first got discovered in 1897, when a John Hopkins University researcher
accidentally forgot to wash his hands before lunch after doing tests in a lab. He tasted something
sweet on his finger, and that was the start of Saccharin. Today, many people use sweeteners like
Splenda, Sweet 'N Low, Equal, and Truvia to sweeten their food and drinks.
To begin with, natural sugar is a kind of sugar that is naturally in food and cannot be made or put
into them. For example, this kind of sugar can be found in fruit as fructose and dairy products such
as milk and cheese as lactose. Also, according to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, "Foods
with natural sugar have an important role in the diet of cancer patients and anyone trying to prevent
cancer because they provide essential nutrients that keep the body healthy and help prevent disease."
Then, eating natural organic sugar doesn't just keep you healthier, but it also helps the environment
protection and the reduce of pollution by not using more chemicals to grow plants. Therefore,
Natural Sugar is used for not just making our bodies healthy but for making the environment healthy
too.
Secondly, we have Artificial sugar, or sweetener, that is formed in labs and is

genome still expects us to eat this way (Gluckman et al., 2016). But recently we have adopted a new
post–industrial lifestyle that seems to go against our genetic makeup because there is an increasing
trend of metabolic diseases in our society. We noticed this trend decades ago and have been trying to
explain it. In 1962, geneticist James Neel proposed the thrifty gene hypothesis, saying that some of
our ancient ancestors with a gene variant that allowed them to store calories as fat prevailed because
it gave a survival edge during times of famine (Johnson and Andrews, 2015). That is a great
advantage during Paleolithic times when food could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Medical professionals, manufacturers, and consumers are all aware of the negative impacts of added
sugar. So instead of curtailing a sugar addiction, scientists and manufactures created a "healthy"
alternative: artificial sweeteners. But artificial sweeteners are not a healthy alternative because they
too negatively impact metabolic health.
Artificial sweeteners are known by many different names: low calorie sweeteners (LCS), low and
non–calorie sweeteners (LNCS), non–nutritive sweeteners (NNS), and non–caloric artificial
sweeteners (NAS) (Riobó Serván, Sierra Poyatos, & Soldo Rodríguez, 2014). They can be divided
into two groups: nutritive sweeteners, which add some energy value (calories) and non–nutritive
sweeteners, which are intensely sweet and add no energy value (Neacsu and Madar, 2014). The
Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has approved five artificial sweeteners safe for human
consumption and they are: acesulfame, aspartame, neotame, saccharin, and sucralose (Ludwig,
2011). These sweeteners are found in thousands of products on the market, from foods and drinks to
toothpastes and medicines. The sweeteners are used as sugar substitutes because they are so
intensely sweet that concentrations low enough do not increase caloric content, but still provide the

Essay about Rxn of Iodoethane with Sodium Saccharin
Title: Reaction of Iodoethane with Sodium Saccharin– Ambient Nucleophile
Dates Performed: February 21 + 28, 2013
Date Submitted: March 14, 2013
Abstract:
The product ratio of N–ethylsaccharin to O–ethylsaccharin that occurred due to alkylation with
iodoethane at 80 oC was determined to be 81.5% to 18.5%, respectively, based on an analysis of the
1H NMR spectrum that was collected. The melting point range of 87.8–94.7 oC also indicated that
the mixture was largely composed of N–ethylsaccharin. The more prevalent product structure is:

N– saccharin is more stable than O–saccharin, so it should be the major product of the reaction, if
not the only product, if the reaction reaches thermal equilibrium. A reaction involving the oxygen as
the nucleophile should occur faster than one involving nitrogen because the oxygen is more
electronegative. This electronegativity would attract the attack of the nucleophile more so than the
Nitrogen atom would. Based on the 1H NMR spectrum that was collected, a few things can be
determined. Based on deshielding and electronegativity, the peak that occurs around 4.7ppm is
associated with the O–ethylsaccharin product and the peak at 3.8 ppm is associated with the N–
ethylsaccharin product. Based on the height ration, the N–ethylsaccharin product is the more
prevalent result. The solvent that was chosen for the experiment is a polar aprotic solvent that can be
used to stabilize charge. This stabilization can also be used to stabilize an ionic transition state. This
stabilization of the transition state along with the nature of the products based on the chemical
properties would encourage the reaction to proceed toward the N–ethylsaccharin product. This
product is more stable

Is Sugar Really That Bad For You Summary
Health Article Summary
Article: "Is Sugar Really That Bad for You?"
Everybody loves sugary treats, but there's a new bad food guy in town and its sugar. Experts say
sugar is "poison" and it's "killing us." Although we need the sugar in our bodies it's our body's
preferred fuel, but we eat too much of the sugar so it hurts our bodies. There are also natural
occurring sugar, such as fruit, some vegetables, and milk which gives it their sweet taste. This is
perfectly healthy, it's added sugar, we don't have to take away desserts to make us healthy and we
just need to eat strategically. Major companies have started the act to lower the sugar amounts in

Sweet tooth is a real thing, the love for sugar is in our DNA, there are 2 sweet receptor genes that
makes us love sugar or sweets. We shouldn't each much sugar but The American Heart Association
(AHA) has given us recommendations on how much sugar we should consume. Woman should
consume no more than 24 grams of sugar each day, which is 6 teaspoons of added sugar each day,
that's less than one can of soda! An average woman eats 18 teaspoons daily, that's 3 times more than
our average recommendations! Sugar is a sneaky little spy, it's hidden in places you never knew had
sugar. Salad dressings to crackers have added sugar, which can go way past our average sugar
amount, which goes over 24 grams of sugar! AHA (The American Heart Association) says too much
added sugar can lead to obesity, 2 types of diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. This can cause fat

can hurt the liver or body. Glucose eats off your stomach and fructose stays in the liver which can be

Artificial Sweeteners
The Solution Or The Problem Over the last couple of years there has been a lot of talk about healthy
alternatives to sugar. People have pursued sugar and claimed that it is the biggest problem in the
food industry. Contrary to popular belief, sugar is not the problem. Although it can lead to things
like heart disease and diabetes, sugar in moderation is not unhealthy. Sugar can also be much
healthier than it's manufactured counterparts. Because of their health concerns, namely their
carcinogenic nature and low nutrient–value, artificial sweeteners should not be used frequently as an
alternative to sugar over other natural sweeteners. One of the most major problem with sugar

High fructose corn syrup, or HFCS, is an artificial sweetener that is used extremely frequently in the
US. In many commercial or ads, people discuss the amount of sugar in a can of soda, for example.
However, "More than 90 percent of the caloric sweetener supplied for beverages in the United States
is high–fructose corn syrup, not sucrose" (Sugar.org). So, in actuality, there is no sugar in the drinks
mentioned, but really just a sugar substitute. Many of the problems attributed to HFCS are paired
with sugar, when really sugar has nothing to do with it. Agriculture Department data shows that
"U.S. per–capita consumption of real sugar (sucrose) is 34 percent lower now than it was 40 years
ago, while over the same period obesity and other metabolic diseases started to rise" (Sugar.org).
This shows that while sugar consumption went down, diseases went up, so they can be attributed to
sugar substitutes such as HFCS. In fact, the Sugar Association is currently in "several related,
ongoing efforts to obtain rulings that impact public policy as it relates to high fructose corn syrup
(HFCS), to broaden public awareness and encourage public participation" (Sugar.org). They are
basically using HFCS corporations for putting sugar and HFCS in the same category, which makes
sugar out to be the problem. HFCS is just one of the many artificial sweeteners used, and the

How Safe Is Stevia?
How Safe Is Stevia?
Now that you have made the commitment to work with a personal trainer, it's time to get serious
about eating a healthy diet. For many of us, cutting calories is a must. Like me, you might have a
serious sweet tooth, but find there is undisputed evidence for giving up sugar. Sugar, or glucose, the
sweet substance you love, creates a rush of insulin in the body, harming how the liver metabolizes
the simple sugar. Continuous spikes of insulin can, in time, cause liver problems, insulin
antagonism, or even Type 2 diabetes. Along with the detrimental impacts on metabolism, sugar has
been identified as a culprit in many other types of diseases. Giving up sugar is a healthy choice and

More and more, Stevia is being cultivated worldwide and used as an artificial sweetener to reduce
sugar consumption, control weight, and enhance overall health. The safety of Stevia has been
verified by top scientific, medical, and monitoring authorities around the world. Both the European
Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) have
confirmed Stevia as a safe alternative sweetener.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Stevia
The only form of Stevia that the FDA has approved as a safe additive is in the form of Stevia
rebaudioside A, a fully refined product, which markedly differs from whole–leaf Stevia or basic
Stevia extracts. The FDA made its determination after several food giants, including Cargill,
PepsiCo, Coca–Cola, and Wisdom Natural Brands submitted safe reviews regarding the use of the
alternative sweetener. The rebaudioside compounds are derived from the leaf by a lengthy chemical
process using a variety of chemicals, including ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and acetonitrile.
Cargill has introduced Truvia®, and describes it: "stevia leaf extract, a versatile, natural, zero–
calorie sweetening ingredient." Wisdom Natural Brands now sells SweetLeaf®, which is their
version of Stevia. Both PepsiCo, and Coca–Cola offer variations of sodas sweetened with

Marketing Analysis : The Blood Sugar 10 Day Detox Diet
Marketing and advertising in Australia promotes the consumption of specific foods in the name of
"health" and "wellbeing". In his new book, The Blood Sugar 10 Day Detox Diet, Dr Mark Hyman
claims that sugar is the new nicotine (SUHR, Heather, 2015). In 2013, a group of researches
concluded that that sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine. They found that Oreo cookies
activated more neurons in the brain's 'pleasure centre' than exposure to drugs (SUHR, Heather,
2015). These claims have resulted in a trend towards reducing or eliminating sugar in one's diet. The
sugar–free diet has become one of particular interest amongst Australians. The less extreme form of
the diet permits low sugar fruits, non starchy vegetables and restricts all added sugars, honey,
processed foods, chocolate, desserts, sweetened yoghurt, most breakfast cereals, sauces, soups and
marinades. On the extreme end, the diet involves cutting out all types of sugar and often
carbohydrates, including fruits, vegetables and dairy products. Companies have manipulated this
trend to more successfully market their products to appeal to consumers. The term 'sugar free' is
popularly used to appeal to health–conscious shoppers. Companies such as Coca–Cola developed
the drink 'Coke–zero,' claiming that it has zero sugar. However, to maintain the taste, artificial
sweeteners are used instead.
Aspartame, popularly known as NutraSweet, is a sugar substitute found in many no–calorie, no–

Artificial Sweeteners
There has been a 200% increase in children's use of artificial sweeteners between 1999 and
2012(Consumer Health News 2017). This is not as sweet as some people think, due to the possibility
of developing cancer, diabetes, or obesity from enough artificial sweeteners. The risk of artificial
sweeteners affecting humans' health can be reduced or eliminated if a proper alternative is chosen
and put in place. In order to find an alternative to anything, one must understand what exactly they
are finding an alternative for, what the current purpose of the thing they are finding an alternative for
is, and why an alternative is needed in the first place. "Artificial sweeteners are synthetic substances

Is Sugar Good Or Bad Essay
Is Sugar Bad? Although there are many benefits sugar contributes to the human body, it is not
reliable enough for a person to say that its necessarily good for you. Sugar is found in almost
everything we consume on a daily basis. For example, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products are just
the basic forms of food that we eat to maintain a "healthy" lifestyle. Sugar is indeed bad for us as
humans because of the many dysfunctions it has on our bodies. Since sugar is used in so many foods
that we eat each day, it is difficult to avoid it. Many people try to their best ability to stay on a
consistent diet to avoid becoming unhealthy. Most understand that sugar is one of the main reasons
why humans are becoming obese. Furthermore, instead of escaping the sugar, we are continuing to
ingest the sugar. Strawberry Yoplait yogurt is one of the most common dietary foods that we eat
when it comes to being healthy. Yogurt contains as much sugar as eating a Twinkie. "Despite being

Zevia Review
Before I tell you what I think about Zevia pop, I want to tell you why I came to this place of doing a
Zevia review. The fact is that I grew up on pop, as I'm sure many people did. My dad is a hardcore
Pepsi drinker, and because I wanted to be just like my dad, I drank Pepsi all the time too. In fact, I
remember getting into those crazy Pepsi versus Coke arguments that seemed to be popular when I
was a teenager (in the 90s) and it made Pepsi really important to me somehow. When I got older, I
started to like Coke. Thank god all those people who I argued with don't know me anymore.

of the stevia that many people don't like, just like the Monk Fruit Extract probably does. (Maybe I
should give the cola flavor a try again.)
Lastly, there is 'natural flavors' listed. I wish companies would just list what they are, but no such
luck. I'm not too worried about this either, though.
Do I Think You Should Give Zevia A Try?
I see that there are 16 different types of drinks to choose from, including a Grapefruit Citrus that
may remind me of Fresca. I'm excited about it. If they are as good as the Black Cherry, they should
be good.
I will definitely be drinking these sodas as long as they are available near me or until I decide I don't
need soda in my life anymore. And, I totally recommend you give them a try if you want to satisfy

"sugar is bad" and also "sugar substitutes are bad" but what are the real underlying factors that
support these claims? Going to the grocery store and always seeing a product that is advertised as
"low sugar" or "sugar free" due to the supplementation of various sugar substitutes, one may be
curious to discover whether or not sugar–free options are a healthier alternative to their sugar
counterparts. Arguments for both sides of the issue are readily available via any popular diet
magazine or public talk shows discussing health and diet trends. The media has consistently
portrayed the use of sugar–substitutes as being beneficial for dieting and low–calorie lifestyles, and
people are believing the unsupported claims by these companies, in turn purchasing the first
products they see on the shelves labeled "sugar–free" without any knowledge of what they are
putting into their body and how it affects them. The question then arises – what are the experts
actually saying regarding this issue? Do artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, aspartame, etc, do
more harm than good? While it would appear authorities have mixed feelings regarding this issue,
artificial sweeteners, despite having low to zero calories, do more harm than good to your body.

was that adults could suffer from sorbitol related diarrhea and gastric symptoms, symptoms which,
can lead to a result of permanent irritable bowel syndrome. Intolerance of sorbitol is also affected by

How Does Glucose Inhibit Sucrose Experiment
First and foremost, the initial hypothesis of this experiment is that stevia, a plant–based and water–
soluble sweetener, will inhibit the activity of the studied enzyme, α–amylase and that sucralose (i.e
Splenda), an artificially produced sweetener, will have the opposite effect. Both stevia and sucralose
designed for diabetics are expected to inhibit the activity of α–amylase more than sucrose. With this
in mind, the results obtained from the experiment showed that stevia does indeed inhibit the activity
of α–amylase most effectively compared to sucrose and sucralose. This can be explained by the
small range of % inhibition values, ranging from 10–20 % inhibition. This can be observed in Figure
1 where one can notice that the standard error bars are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, the results expected for sucralose did not correspond to the experimental values.
Indeed, the control, sucrose, was chosen due to the fact that the synthesis of sucralose begins with
sucrose as its starting material and so was expected to behave in a similar fashion. Instead, it
behaved alike to stevia, with a very similar minimum concentration (based off of experimental
results), but with a range varying from 10–60 % inhibition versus 10–20 % inhibition for stevia. Yet
again, the true comparison is difficult. In order to correct this mistake and so obtain comparable
data, the initial concentrations of both sweeteners and that of sucrose should be the same, whereas in
this particular experiment the concentration of sucrose was neglected. This explains the % inhibition
being over 100% as can be observed in Figure 3. The stock solution, as well as the concentrations of
the inhibitors, could have been increased to correspond with serving size (approximately 2–3g).
These changes could have lead to more suitable data that will be analyzed based on real–life

High Fructose Corn Syrup : Obesity, Diabetes, And Non...
Health concerns have been raised about high fructose corn syrup, which allege contribution to
obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and non–alcoholic fatty liver disease. Critics of the
extensive use of HFCS in food sweetening argue that the highly processed substance is more
harmful to humans than regular sugar, contributing to weight gain by affecting normal appetite
functions and that in some foods HFCS may be a source of mercury a known neurotoxin. Yeah, a

And they are hiding it even better than before. You will now find HFCS in these products:
Baked goods Spaghetti Sauce Mac N Cheese Frozen Pizza Canned fruits Dairy products..... Yep!
Carbonated drinks And most sweetened beverages in the market today! Alias names for HFCS have
been used to try to trick you into thinking what you 're eating isn 't really so bad for you. "Corn

"A coalition of groups sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration Tuesday opposing a
proposal by manufacturers to call high–fructose corn syrup "corn sugar" instead. The coalition says
consumers are against the name change by 100–to–1."

Why Are Artificial Sweeteners Attractive?
Artificially Sweetened: Should We Avoid?
Why are artificial sweeteners so attractive? Sweeteners were created without the calories of sugar.
Such artificial sweeteners started in diet sodas to allow one to drink and not gain weight from high
sugar calories. Diabetics were also able to drink diet sodas without raising one's blood sugar too
high. Sweeteners were also an added bonus because nearly all were sweeter than sugar itself. The
substance became a new trend for avid soda drinkers and candy snackers providing that one could
consume what one wanted without the risk. Fifteen percent of the population in 2004 regularly used
artificial sweeteners, and a vast majority of food and drinks have switched to artificial sweeteners;

When one eats sweeteners, there is an unnatural release of hormones in the body. The hormones that
control one's weight gain, heart rate, cardio abilities, and the brain's reactions are affected. When the
body's response is triggered, one can easily fall ill or have medical concerns. Increasing amount of
people have reported episodes of short–breath, anxiety, loss of control over weight gain, notably fast
heart rates, and even cancer. Reports are constantly being made about the overuse of sweeteners.
When digesting sweeteners the body turns part of the sweetener into methanol; this transition is the
most dangerous. Methanol in the body tends to turn into toxic formaldehyde linking further to
Alzheimer's disease. Consequently, the brain itself is inhibited and compensating for caloric intake
becomes impossible. Saccharin and aspartame (two commonly used sweeteners) have added an
increased weight gain above sugar, even when the calories eaten remain close to same in daily value.
Furthermore, cases have shown the inability to compensate for calories as another cause of glucose

How Much Sugar Is Bad

  • 1. How Much Sugar Is Bad Sugar is not created equal. Because sugar comes with natural and artificial, sugar can be bad with how much you get it. Everything is a toxin. It is matter of amount. water can be deadly if you drink 2 litters in one sitting, or 10 for the day.vitamins can be bad for you. Especially the kind that stays in the fat.Consuming large amount of sugar is bad, but that isn't any new information. For the last month, I did not feel good when I woke up. I had no energy, no ability to think, and I felt I was dead inside. I had breakfast every day too. yesterday, I decided to eat a cookie.and I felt really good. O was tired, but I at least had energy, and I was thinking more clearly. So having too much sugar is bad, but not having sugar in your system even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Synthesis Of Dulcin Synthesis Introduction There is a demand for artificial sweeteners because people want to control their intake of sugar. Saccharin, cyclamates, aspartame, as well as Dulcin, are some sugars that fulfill the need for sweeteners to be of low caloric content. Some of the sweeteners, such as Dulcin, are now considered to yield undesirable health effects with long term use. Dulcin is 250 times sweeter than table sugar. The synthesis of Dulcin was done in order to calculate the percent yield. The lesson of this experiment was to learn how to synthesize Dulcin from phenetidine and potassium cyanate (KOCN). During the experiment, Dulcin was synthezided in the presence of water and acetic acid, which were the solvents. Hydrocyanic acid (HOCN) was formed from the acetic acid and KOCN (Scheme 1 equation 1). Then the HOCN will react with phenetidine to make Dulcin (Scheme 1 equation 2). Scheme 1: Steps in Dulcin Synthesis. The apparatus used was the vacuum filtration, which is faster than the gravity filtration and can only be used with a Büchner funnel. When using the Büchner funnel, a filter paper needs to be inside of the funnel, as well as, a rubber stopper placed on the funnel to guarantee a good seal. After the experiment was completed, a pure sample of Dulcin was obtained because the exact melting point was determined to be 171.5–172.1°C while the literature value was 173–174°C which is a narrow range. The Rf values also support the reasoning that Dulcin is pure because the Rf value for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Diet Pop And Its Effects On Human Health Introduction Many people have faced problems in deciding which pop to drink, regular or diet. People have different opinions on the reasons why they prefer one particular pop to another. Through various researches done all over the world, people have tried to figure out specific causes of ailments especially those thought to be associated with food. As an avid pop drinker, the need to know the best pop option has made me curious about how big of a difference there is. It is important to know the components of each of these pops and decide on the one that has the least side effects or harm on human health (Brownell et al, 2007). Diet pop contains aspartame, which is a sweetener although it is non–sugar. Diet pop is consumed worldwide. At temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, the aspartame in diet pop changes to phermeldahide. This is a chemical substance that is used as a freezing agent in mortuaries. Consumption of this chemical substance in large amounts is vital to human health and can cause cancer, severe ailments, brain tumors, lymphoma, and brain lesions. On the other hand, regular pop contains a small percentage of sugar. The human brain requires sugar for proper functioning. Consumption of large amounts of sugar may also be dangerous but regular pop, consumed in controlled amounts, does not contain enough sugar to pose health threats to individuals. Purpose of the study The primary purpose of this paper is to decide which type of pop is better for our bodies. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. High Fructose Ry Sweeteners Sugar–it is that deliciously sweet white substance that we just can't seem to resist. It is a guilty pleasure that is known by almost everyone to be unhealthy, but is sugar actually a chronic toxin? Is it slowly killing us from the inside out? In recent years, more and more research seems to suggest so. With the increasing epidemic of obesity and diabetes, scientists are looking for answers, and their findings are quite disturbing. If sugar is a toxin, then people need to know because health and lives are at stake and the sugar industry could fall apart. To answer the question about the toxicity of sugar, one must be clear about what type of sugar is being discussed because there are many different types. This essay will discuss high fructose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to L. Bell, studies show that the sugar fructose in high fructose corn syrup messes up the appetite controls, causing a person to not realize that they are full even though they ate the energy– dense fructose (L. Bell, 2013). This overeating can lead to weight gain, which can in turn lead to other serious health problems. According to a study published in the International Journal of Obesity (2013) "High SSB [fructose–rich sugar–sweetened beverages] consumption has a notable effect on increased levels of BMI [body mass index] and SUA [serum uric acid]" (W.T. Lin, H.L. Huang, M.C. Huang, T.F. Chan, S.Y. Ciou, C.Y. Lee, Y.W. Ciou, T.H. Duh, P.L. Lin, T.N. Wang, T.Y. Liu, and C.H. Lee, 2013, p. 532). In other words, the consumption of beverages sweetened with high fructose corn syrup significantly increases levels of body mass index and the production of uric acid. Uric acid is harmful because it can lead to kidney disease and gout, the painful inflammation of the joints because of all of the extra uric acid circulating in the blood. Another concern about fructose is how it effects the liver. Every cell in the body can use glucose to make energy, but only the liver can break down fructose. When fructose is eaten, it must pass through the liver to be broken down. According to R. Lustig, once it gets to the mitochondria, the power plant of the cell, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Marketing Analysis : Coca Cola Marketing event 2014 Coca–Cola Company released its new product in early September 2014 called Coca–Cola Life and with it, launched a marketing campaign in order to promote it and raise awareness of the customers. Coca–Cola Life is aimed at adults and the aim of the product is to tackle obesity with lower sugar and calorie levels. Looking at these strategies Coca–Cola is trying to catch people's attention at as many locations in UK possible and to point out the properties of Coca–Cola life as it is supposed to be a healthier version of the original Coca–Cola product in the. The relevance to marketing that this campaign is making is that it's focused on wide range of above the line advertising in order to raise awareness. When looking at the marketing campaign some issues have to be pointed out in ordered to improve it, specifically in this case an issue that is raised that Coca–Cola is introducing 60% less sugar and calories to this new product and is a part of the movement to tackle obesity, yet the price of the product remains the same even though less ingredients are used in order to produce it. According to Tom Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, Coca–Cola should really reduce its price if it wants its consumers to believe that coke will actually contribute to a healthier diet and not continue keeping its profit levels (Huffington 2014). On the other hand there are some that don't support the product at all and consider it to be very bad for one's health. Jaude Lovell, who is a scientist and owns a website that spreads the awareness in the science community, pointed out that Coca–Cola life's green packaging sends a message to consumers that coke is actually good for them., whereas in her opinion is has very unhealthy properties. Taking a Look at Stevia "The leaves of the stevia plant– a small perennial shrub also known as sweet herb– have long been used as a natural sweetener and herbal medicine in the plant's native South America (Horowitz 36)." The artificial sweetener Stevia is becoming more popular. Stevia is an herb with about 300 times more sweetness power than sugar. There are many benefits to stevia such as helping those maintain a healthy blood pressure, helping diabetic patients and those who are on a low carb and low sugar controlled diet. "Previously only available as dietary supplements in the United states–because of theoretical concerns about effects on blood sugar control, renal function, and human cardiovascular and reproductive systems–highly refined preparations of stevia glycosides are now approved for use as sugar substitute food additives (Horowitz 36)." A 2 year study was conducted of randomized patients with mild essential hypertension (Horowitz 36). "Those who took capsules containing 500 mg of stevioside powder 3 times daily had significant decreases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, compared to the placebo group (Horowitz 36)". "The quality of life also improved in the stevioside users, and no significant adverse effects were noted (Horowitz 36)". Artificial Sweeteners Should Be Banned Artificial sweeteners should be banned because of their harmful effects Kaleb Kassaye Nova Southeastern University [Comp 1050 EV2: Kevin Dvorak] The use of artificial sweeteners in beverages and food has been on a steady rise since 1969, the year it was authorized in the United States of America. The popularity of artificial sweeteners has been on a rise because of the benefit that it is a zero calorie sweetener .Even though artificial sweeteners have some great benefits many scientists believe that it causes adverse effects such as cancer, weight gain and depression. I strongly believe that consumers are not aware of the side effects of artificial sweeteners hence the increase in consumption since 1969. Through extensive research, scientists have concluded that artificial sweeteners are carcinogenic; a cancer causing agent. Scientific research has revealed that cyclamate in combination with saccharin, the two main ingredients in artificial sweeteners, caused bladder cancer in laboratory rats. Though test where not done on humans scientist believe that the long–term effect of using artificial sweeteners would lead to the same complications in humans. Amino acids are biologically important organic compounds composed of amine and carboxylic acid functional groups. The human body needs amino acids to thrive. It is documented that ingestion of high amounts of artificial amino acids found in artificial sweeteners can have adverse effects on the human body such as cancer. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Are Ants More Attracted To Stevia Are ants more attracted to stevia or sugar? Sugar is a sweet–tasting, crystalline compound. This natural substance is most commonly obtained from sugar cane and sugar beet plants. Stevia, C44H70O23, is an even sweeter, non–caloric sweetener, which naturally grows in the form of a leaf. It was discovered more than two–hundred years ago, in South America. The hypothesis of an experiment declares that if one placed two dishes (one with an ounce of stevia, and one with an ounce of sugar) outside, then ants would be more attracted to the stevia. Ants could either be more attracted to stevia or sugar, depending on the differences between the substances, the components' sweetness, and the experiment day's climate. Sugar is classified as a carbohydrate, making it an important source and provider of energy. Carbohydrates can be further separated into three sections: sugars, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. Additionally, sugars can be classified as the following: monosaccharides; disaccharides and polyols. Common monosaccharides, individual units of sugar, are glucose, fructose, and galactose, whereas some ordinary disaccharides, two bonded units of sugar, are sucrose, lactose, and maltose. Arthur Andersen survey in China showed that most joint ventures from food and drink were not profitable. Most MNCs in China are unprofitable despite substantial growth. Majority of the Chinese are considered "flat– bellied" and don't see the need for a diet regimen. The Chinese culture also dictates that they are not that concerned with their teeth, hence they don't have that fear of tooth decay. The company should enter the Greater China market as a niche product for consumers with a medical need. The company cannot delay its entry in the China market, especially with factors such as an average of 10% economic growth, a quickly emerging middle class, and a high possibility in consumers' increase purchasing power. Postponement of entry may mean higher costs in the future and although the company will not immediately profit from the venture, research showed that companies who entered the market 5 to 10 years ago were doing best. I've been thinking about this, so I decided to do an experiment with this. What effect does different sugars have on meringues? Diabetic people can have some types of sugars, so they're allowed to use alternatives like Stevia instead in meringues. What exactly is a meringue? Meringues are normally a French dessert made of whipped egg whites and typically caster sugar. It also has a Swiss and Italian origin. A lot of patience is required to make these, as you have to whip the egg whites until the sugar dissolves and you have to bake them overnight. You can not rush making these. However, when you take a bite into the sweet, light dessert, it will have been worth it. Stevia is often used as a sugar substitute, but how is it different from sugar? As most people know, sugar has calories. To be exact, there is about 48 calories in a tablespoon. However, Stevia is harvested from the plant 'stevia rebaudiana'. Stevia is 30 times sweeter than sugar in its refined form and in its raw state, it's almost 300 times sweeter than sugar! Stevia also has health benefits, like lowering your blood pressure, and more. Therefore, aspartame (APM) in diet soda can lead to cancer and the risk of developing carcinogenic effects increase in those who have a life span exposure to APM. In addition to aspartame in diet soda contributing to cancer, it also causes memory loss. Carbonated beverages began containing aspartame in 1983, after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it (Gold, 1995). Aspartame contains 40% aspartic acid, which is an amino acid that increases the level of aspartate and glutamate in blood plasma, according to Gold (1995). This increase of aspartate, as explained by Gold (1995), causes over stimulation of the nerves by acting within the brain as neurotransmitters, which aid in sending and receiving information between neurons. Aspartate increases the possibility of destroying the cell surface's membrane on the opposite side of the area between nerve cells (where transmission of nerve impulses occur) in the brain (Humphries, Prestorius, & Naude, 2008). As a result, excessive aspartate or glutamate can slowly destroy neurons in the brain contributed by an influx of calcium contained in the cells, thus causing memory loss. Besides diet soda developing an effect on memory loss, the aspartame in diet soda can lead to weight gain. Mehl–Madrona, (2005), as cited in Humphries et al. Artificial sugar is chemically processed and used in placed of sugar. Artificial sugar is usually used less in food, candies and drinks, because it tends to be 200–600 times sweeter than natural sugar. The artificial sweeteners have become a controversy, continuously being linked to cancer, diabetes and recently the function of the nervous system (brain). The use of sugar and artificial sugar in certain beverages or food has to be approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Is the FDA approving something beneficial or harmful to us? Artificial sweetener is a substance that replaces sugar. (Wax, 2015) Replacing sugar can have a dramatic effect on how our body uses it. Sugar gives our body energy and keeps our cells functioning. (WSRO, 2012) There are six natural sugars that are found in our daily food, these are alright for the body to use in moderation. Glucose, Fructose, Galactose, Lactose, Sucrose, Maltose, even though these are natural sugars found in our food, our body does reject some of these. For instance, Lactose, many people become lactose intolerant and are not able to digest it because they are missing the enzyme lactase. (WSRO, 2012) Glucose is the most common form of sugar, this is what the cells use to help our brain and muscles function. (Dictionary, 2005) Glucose is the only fuel that the brain can use. • 38. Natural Sweetener Vs Natural Sugar Artificial Sweetener vs. Natural Sugar Is there anything "SWEET" about artificial sugar? Well, over the years there have been many different kinds of sweeteners that have been tested in labs to see how they affect our bodies. The first big artificial sweetener first got discovered in 1897, when a John Hopkins University researcher accidentally forgot to wash his hands before lunch after doing tests in a lab. He tasted something sweet on his finger, and that was the start of Saccharin. Today, many people use sweeteners like Splenda, Sweet 'N Low, Equal, and Truvia to sweeten their food and drinks. To begin with, natural sugar is a kind of sugar that is naturally in food and cannot be made or put into them. For example, this kind of sugar can be found in fruit as fructose and dairy products such as milk and cheese as lactose. Also, according to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, "Foods with natural sugar have an important role in the diet of cancer patients and anyone trying to prevent cancer because they provide essential nutrients that keep the body healthy and help prevent disease." Then, eating natural organic sugar doesn't just keep you healthier, but it also helps the environment protection and the reduce of pollution by not using more chemicals to grow plants. Therefore, Natural Sugar is used for not just making our bodies healthy but for making the environment healthy too. Secondly, we have Artificial sugar, or sweetener, that is formed in labs and is ... N– saccharin is more stable than O–saccharin, so it should be the major product of the reaction, if not the only product, if the reaction reaches thermal equilibrium. A reaction involving the oxygen as the nucleophile should occur faster than one involving nitrogen because the oxygen is more electronegative. This electronegativity would attract the attack of the nucleophile more so than the Nitrogen atom would. Based on the 1H NMR spectrum that was collected, a few things can be determined. Based on deshielding and electronegativity, the peak that occurs around 4.7ppm is associated with the O–ethylsaccharin product and the peak at 3.8 ppm is associated with the N– ethylsaccharin product. Based on the height ration, the N–ethylsaccharin product is the more prevalent result. The solvent that was chosen for the experiment is a polar aprotic solvent that can be used to stabilize charge. This stabilization can also be used to stabilize an ionic transition state. This stabilization of the transition state along with the nature of the products based on the chemical properties would encourage the reaction to proceed toward the N–ethylsaccharin product. However, "More than 90 percent of the caloric sweetener supplied for beverages in the United States is high–fructose corn syrup, not sucrose" (Sugar.org). So, in actuality, there is no sugar in the drinks mentioned, but really just a sugar substitute. Many of the problems attributed to HFCS are paired with sugar, when really sugar has nothing to do with it. Agriculture Department data shows that "U.S. per–capita consumption of real sugar (sucrose) is 34 percent lower now than it was 40 years ago, while over the same period obesity and other metabolic diseases started to rise" (Sugar.org). In his new book, The Blood Sugar 10 Day Detox Diet, Dr Mark Hyman claims that sugar is the new nicotine (SUHR, Heather, 2015). In 2013, a group of researches concluded that that sugar is 8 times more addictive than cocaine. They found that Oreo cookies activated more neurons in the brain's 'pleasure centre' than exposure to drugs (SUHR, Heather, 2015). These claims have resulted in a trend towards reducing or eliminating sugar in one's diet. The sugar–free diet has become one of particular interest amongst Australians. The less extreme form of the diet permits low sugar fruits, non starchy vegetables and restricts all added sugars, honey, processed foods, chocolate, desserts, sweetened yoghurt, most breakfast cereals, sauces, soups and marinades. On the extreme end, the diet involves cutting out all types of sugar and often carbohydrates, including fruits, vegetables and dairy products. Companies have manipulated this trend to more successfully market their products to appeal to consumers. The term 'sugar free' is popularly used to appeal to health–conscious shoppers. • 55. Artificial Sweeteners There has been a 200% increase in children's use of artificial sweeteners between 1999 and 2012(Consumer Health News 2017). This is not as sweet as some people think, due to the possibility of developing cancer, diabetes, or obesity from enough artificial sweeteners. The risk of artificial sweeteners affecting humans' health can be reduced or eliminated if a proper alternative is chosen and put in place. In order to find an alternative to anything, one must understand what exactly they are finding an alternative for, what the current purpose of the thing they are finding an alternative for is, and why an alternative is needed in the first place. • 59. Zevia Review Before I tell you what I think about Zevia pop, I want to tell you why I came to this place of doing a Zevia review. The fact is that I grew up on pop, as I'm sure many people did. My dad is a hardcore Pepsi drinker, and because I wanted to be just like my dad, I drank Pepsi all the time too. In fact, I remember getting into those crazy Pepsi versus Coke arguments that seemed to be popular when I was a teenager (in the 90s) and it made Pepsi really important to me somehow. When I got older, I started to like Coke. Thank god all those people who I argued with don't know me anymore. Is Zevia Any Good Anyway, eventually I gained a ton of weight, and I realized that I probably shouldn't be drinking either Pepsi or Coke, so I started to look for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, I'm not too concerned about it. And it also contains Erythritol. This is ANOTHER sweetener. And I don't remember this being in Zevia when I checked years ago (I could be mistaken), but I imagine it helps to take away the taste of the stevia that many people don't like, just like the Monk Fruit Extract probably does. (Maybe I should give the cola flavor a try again.) Lastly, there is 'natural flavors' listed. I wish companies would just list what they are, but no such luck. I'm not too worried about this either, though. Do I Think You Should Give Zevia A Try? I see that there are 16 different types of drinks to choose from, including a Grapefruit Citrus that may remind me of Fresca. I'm excited about it. If they are as good as the Black Cherry, they should be good. I will definitely be drinking these sodas as long as they are available near me or until I decide I don't need soda in my life anymore. And, I totally recommend you give them a try if you want to satisfy your pop needs without the sugar or artificial ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shining The Spotlight On Artificial Sweeteners Rebecca Stacey Professor Agatucci Writing 122 9 June 2015 Shining the Spotlight on Artificial Sweeteners It has been said many times before, "sugar is bad" and also "sugar substitutes are bad" but what are the real underlying factors that support these claims? Going to the grocery store and always seeing a product that is advertised as "low sugar" or "sugar free" due to the supplementation of various sugar substitutes, one may be curious to discover whether or not sugar–free options are a healthier alternative to their sugar counterparts. Arguments for both sides of the issue are readily available via any popular diet magazine or public talk shows discussing health and diet trends. The media has consistently portrayed the use of sugar–substitutes as being beneficial for dieting and low–calorie lifestyles, and people are believing the unsupported claims by these companies, in turn purchasing the first products they see on the shelves labeled "sugar–free" without any knowledge of what they are putting into their body and how it affects them. The question then arises – what are the experts actually saying regarding this issue? Do artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, aspartame, etc, do more harm than good? While it would appear authorities have mixed feelings regarding this issue, artificial sweeteners, despite having low to zero calories, do more harm than good to your body. There are no proven benefits to sugar–substitutes and many studies have shown that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Presumably the reason why the children had more documented information was because their bodies are less developed than adults therefore they experience the side effects more heavily and easily than their elders. The outcome of the study was that adults could suffer from sorbitol related diarrhea and gastric symptoms, symptoms which, can lead to a result of permanent irritable bowel syndrome. • 69. How Does Glucose Inhibit Sucrose Experiment First and foremost, the initial hypothesis of this experiment is that stevia, a plant–based and water– soluble sweetener, will inhibit the activity of the studied enzyme, α–amylase and that sucralose (i.e Splenda), an artificially produced sweetener, will have the opposite effect. Both stevia and sucralose designed for diabetics are expected to inhibit the activity of α–amylase more than sucrose. With this in mind, the results obtained from the experiment showed that stevia does indeed inhibit the activity of α–amylase most effectively compared to sucrose and sucralose. This can be explained by the small range of % inhibition values, ranging from 10–20 % inhibition. This can be observed in Figure 1 where one can notice that the standard error bars are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately, the results expected for sucralose did not correspond to the experimental values. Indeed, the control, sucrose, was chosen due to the fact that the synthesis of sucralose begins with sucrose as its starting material and so was expected to behave in a similar fashion. Instead, it behaved alike to stevia, with a very similar minimum concentration (based off of experimental results), but with a range varying from 10–60 % inhibition versus 10–20 % inhibition for stevia. Yet again, the true comparison is difficult. In order to correct this mistake and so obtain comparable data, the initial concentrations of both sweeteners and that of sucrose should be the same, whereas in this particular experiment the concentration of sucrose was neglected. This explains the % inhibition being over 100% as can be observed in Figure 3. The stock solution, as well as the concentrations of the inhibitors, could have been increased to correspond with serving size (approximately 2–3g). These changes could have lead to more suitable data that will be analyzed based on real–life ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
