HOW INDUSTRIALIZATION
CHANGED THE WORLD
Workers worked up to
14 hours a day for 6
days a week.
Working conditions
were hazardous and
people got injured
regularly.
Workers couldn’t get
help usually if they
got hurt.
FACTORY CONDITIONS
Workers could make
more money as factory
workers than farmers.
People began moving to
cities from the
countryside.
Led to many social
changes.
SO WHY WOULD THEY DO IT?
 The division of labor also made
clear the division between the
worker and owner classes.
 Because of the low pay for
workers and because the living
conditions in cities were
unregulated, housing
conditions were often very
poor.
 The working class lived in
crowded areas often without
basic utilities such as running
water.
DIVISION OF LABOR LED TO SOCIAL
DIVISIONS
Cities doubled in
population.
Unsanitary
conditions abounded
as many people
didn’t have flush
toilets.
Crime increased and
police weren’t
available usually.
CITY LIFE
The middle and upper classes owned the
factories and did other jobs.
They began living in the suburbs, nicer
communities outside of the city.
THE UPPER CLASSES
Because things were
changing, newer styles
of economic theories
were developed.
Laissez-Faire (hands
off) capitalism was the
foundation of
economics.
Industry was owned by
private citizens and the
government did not get
involved.
LAISSEZ-FAIRE CAPITALISM
Supporters of
capitalism opposed:
Minimum wage laws
Better working
conditions
Feared these ideas
would mess the
economy up.
Opponents argued
that:
Laws of competition
Supply and demand
Self-interest
Led to big
differences between
rich and poor.
PROS AND CONS
Result? The poor were constantly taken advantage of.
