How does your product engage with
audiences and how would it be distributed as
real media text?
Claudia Spanier
Uses and gratification theory
• What it is:
• The uses and gratifications theory is the approach to recognize why and how people
actively seek particular media to satisfy their particular needs
Where the theory comes from:
• The uses and gratification theory was first introduced in
the 1940’s. Blumler and Katz’s theory show the mass
communication context. There theory explains that the
media users play an operative role when choosing and using
the media. A users has an active part in the connection
process and are therefore goal orientated in their media use
How I chose what my film was going to be about
and why:
• As a teenager/ adult like myself I would say I have a good
idea what interests an audience of my age, more specifically
my gender in some cases. I choose to do a film about drug
use because as you get older drug use comes up and I think
people like myself would find it interesting to watch to show
the dangers as well as still making it look cool and trippy to
watch. It also has elements of 2000’s style teen girl getting
ready do her makeup to music which I think is another way
my audience like teen girls will engage in my product
What does the audience get out of my film?
• -entertained
• -educated
• -aesthetically pleasing
• -good music
Who is my film aimed at?
• To help determine who my film was aimed at I used: PIES.
• Personal identity: young adults/ teens
• Inform: drug dangers
• Entertainment: engaging quite fast pace
• Social: get promoted on social media through young people
Where my film could be seen?
• Because my film is an indie film, it will be independently
distributed and could be seen on streaming services such as
YouTube.
• It is also a very low budget film, therefore there will be no
theatrical realize
• Clips of it could be seen on it on free apps to post such as
TikTok
Other ways I can get my film distributed
• Since my film is aimed at a young adult audience, that
generation is the most up to date in technology and using
their phones- especially with social media. Examples of
socials media I would used apps such as: Snapchat,
Instagram, TikTok
Examples in my film to show that it is engaging for
young adults and teens:
First example: this film involves drugs and the effects of some of
them, which is very relevant in these peoples lives as they get
older
This film also shows the main protagonist getting ready with up
close shots of makeup which would stereotypically interest young
teen girls/ adults
This film also has a lot of cool trippy effects which are
mesmerizing to watch and I think this would really interest the
audience that I am aiming it at
Who is most likely to watch my film
• In my opinion I think that my film is most aimed at/ most likely to
watch is young adults, teens and adults
• This is because the topics that are addressed are very relevant to
what is going on in young adults lives
• The cast is all mostly teenagers there for people of the same aged
would want to watch
