How Does Voltaire Use Humor In Candide
Comedy is often thought of as light–hearted humor; however, it can be used to incite thoughtful laughter– using a humorous situation to invoke
reflection. Two examples of books that incite thoughtful laughter are: America (the Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction by Jon Stewart
and Candide by Voltaire. The two authors usehumor to satirize how people think and the way they act and to incite the reader to actually think about
the subject presented in their texts. In Candide, Voltaire uses dark humor and irony to attack philosophical optimism, government, religion, and human
greed. Voltaire mainly attacks philosophical optimism– and this is seen through his character Pangloss, who believes that everything is the "best of all
possible worlds" even after getting syphilis, being almost killed, and sold as a slave. When Pangloss states that a situation is ... Show more content on

For example, when he told Candide that he contracted syphilis, he explained that it was a great thing because if they were never introduced to syphilis
(which came from the Americas), then they would never have been introduced to chocolate. Voltaire uses understatement to refute Pangloss– through
the character Candide, who, after facing some form of danger, starts to doubt his teacher's philosophy. In Chapter XVI, Candide and Cacambo are
captured by Oreilons who plan to roast and eat them. Candide's reaction was to state "All is well, I won't argue about it...", but our mind tells us that
being roasted alive and then eaten isn't fine and dandy. Voltaire throws in plenty of euphemisms throughout his book. One example is in Chapter II
–
Candide is inscripted to fight for the Bulgars. One the men he drinks with delivers an extravagant speech, and afterwards we learn about the harshness
of warfare. Chapter VI–

How Does Mark Twain Use Humor In Huckleberry Finn
Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was born November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. Twain is known for his famous works
such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which was his inspiration for
the setting of these two classic novels. His childhood was not the brightest while living in Hannibal, and he incorporated the hardships he witnessed, as
well as indured, into his writing with the use of humor. By doing so, Mark Twain became a famous American Literature author that impacted society by
providing a new perspective of human nature through his use of humor in his writing.

His work has been exhibited and analyzed by people with all kinds of different perspectives. Although there are so many perspectives on his work,
they are generally similar in the sense that most of the readers find his stories to be phenomenal. Today, he is praised for his contributions to literature.
Famous author, Ernest Hemingway, even went so far as to announce that all modern American literature comes from Huckleberry Finn. However,
critics were not always so accepting of his work. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is known as the first major novel in which the narrator speaks in
dialect. This new style left some critics appalled by the sudden change in literature that would be initiated by Twain."If Mr. [Samuel] Clemens [Mark
Twain] cannot think of something better to tell our pure–minded lads and lasses, he'd best stop writing for them," wrote, Louisa May Alcott, the author

The Use Of Satire And Humor Is A Vital Function Of Our...
Satire and Humor is a Vital Function of our Society Humor and satire is an entertaining and extremely effective method for highlighting social
ideologies, challenging a governmental system or an organization, exposing injustice, and encouraging positive change in perspective. In his book,
Status Anxiety, Alain de Botton asserts that humorists are a vital part of society as they are always successful in communicating, conveying, and
delivering their message or idea to the public and the community. Humorists and satirists have demonstrated their vital role in inspiring freedom of
speech and thought, which motivates progressive changes, in political election campaigns hosted on TV almost daily, and in Mark Twain's satire of
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Comedians occasionally and intentionally use offensive and insulting comments to get their message across,
however, these statements normally include protected opinions and beliefs about certain issues and global topics. By orally speaking or writing their
ideas and beliefs, satirists and comedians act as an example for the public to use their freedom of speech and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

a way to embrace his sense of humor on many touching subjects like death. He often joked about how dreadful the world would be if we were to
continue to live forever. He gives us a new perspective on death through his quote. "The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives
fully is prepared to die at any time." Death is Inevitable, something beyond our control, but yet Twain embraces the concept of death with is wry sense
of humor. If you are to be fully engaged

How Does Jenny Allen Use Humor In The Trouble With Nature
In Jenny Allen's essay "The Trouble With Nature" humor is utilized in order to entertain through the use of tones, such as sarcasm, and silly imagery.
The opening and closing paragraphs best introduce this humor. Jenny introduces comedic irony through the end of the introduction. She says, "They
needn't go outdoors to get close to nature. Nature comes right inside" (Allen 1). It is funny to the reader, signaling the tone and aim of the rest of the
article. Because of its nature, the conclusion also shows this. For example, "Many... begin to consider the option of living in the out–of–doors, where
creatures keep to themselves" (Allen 13). This, again, uses irony and sarcasm to, this time, sum up the humor of the rest of the article. Although,

Use Of Humor In Catcher In The Rye
When humor is used to convey a message or theme, the emotional response exhibited by the receivers of the message is immensely positive. Within the
Catcher in the Rye, humor is used to connect to the reader with its more pessimistic and negative concepts, such as depression and suicidal thoughts.
The use of comedy as the tone makes the book cheerfully appealing and relatable, demonstrating how it contributes to the overall meaning and effect.
Humor within the book allows for the negative concepts to be present, but at the same time makes the book cheerfully appealing. With comedy as the
main tone of the book, it becomes more cheerfully appealing to the reader. As the many gloomy concepts within the book continue to occur throughout

Essay about Emily Dickinson's Use of Humor and Irony
Emily Dickinson's Use of Humor and Irony
While much of Emily Dickinson's poetry has been described as sad or morose, the poetess did use humor and irony in many of her poems. This
essay will address the humor and/ or irony found in five of Dickinson's poems: "Faith" is a Fine Invention, I'm Nobody! Who are you?, Some keep the
Sabbath Going to Church and Success Is Counted Sweetest. The attempt will be made to show how Dickinson used humor and / or irony for the dual
purposes of comic relief and to stress an idea or conclusion about her life and environment expressed by the poetess in the respective poem. The most
humorous or ironic are some of the shorter poems, such as the four lined stanzas of "Faith" is a Fine Invention and ... Show more content on

This poem may be partially auto–biographical in nature. Dickinson made few attempts during her life to be taken as more than an armature poetess.
On one occasion, she sent a collection of her poems to a correspondent who was also a published poet. His criticism of the poems devastated
Dickinson, and she never made another attempt towards publishing her works.
In Success..., Dickinson reflects on the nature of success and how, ironically, it can be best appreciated and understood by those who have not
achieved it and have no taste of it. As in "Faith"..., Dickinson powerfully presents her thoughts in a few lines. The poem deals only with one, ironic
but universal, idea in its short length. It is the bitterness expressed at this irony (as found it Dickinson's juxtaposition of the words sweetest and sorest,
separated by two lines) that is most felt by the reader. While the previous poem expresses the poetess' bitterness and sorrow with one aspect of her life,
I'm Nobody! Who Are You? uses humor without irony to address another. In this poem, Dickinson style appears almost child
–like in its of descriptions
including frogs and bogs, as well as the lively energy expressed by the poem through its use of dashes and brief wording. Dickinson seems to be
addressing her spinster, hermit–like existence (I'm Nobody) and her preference to it.
The poetess seems to relate that her situation has not left

Neuropsychological Use Of Humor In Therapy
What comes to mind when you hear the word, "humor?" Some may think jokes while others would say standup comedy or a show that makes them
laugh, but would therapy be the first thing that came into an individual's mind? Many Neuropsychological benefits have been found in humor and is
now being used in therapy around the world. Humor can be used in a more serious matter. Humor in therapy is prescribed by doctors and can replace
the use for pain killers and narcotics allowing patients to naturally cope with diseases, old age and intervention.
Humor in therapy, although most popular today, can be traced back all the way to 1962. According to Dr. William F. Fry, a professor of

Use of Tone, Irony and Humor in The Hammon and the Beans
Ernest Hemingway once explained, "A writer's problem does not change. He himself changes and the world he lives in changes but his problem
remains the same. It is always how to write truly and having found what is true, to project it in such a way that it becomes a part of the experience of
the person who reads it." The attitude and "projection" with which the author creates a story is the tone. A difficult aspect of writing to master, tone is
one that transitions a piece of writing from satisfactory to exemplary. In The Hammon and the Beans, Americo Paredes incorporates tone in a manner

The second purpose for the inclusion of contradictory statements is to enlighten the reader about the narrator's emotions versus those of other
characters. The impression the reader obtains of how the narrator views the house and setting is predominantly positive, while the opinion his mother
has of the house is severely negative. "My mother hated it, especially because of the pigeons that cooed all day about the eaves. They had fleas, she
said (p.274)." The tone of opposition created by presenting both positive and negative aspects of the ideas in the story, enables the reader to gain a
clear image of the setting, and to examine both sides of the story.
Similar to the way in which two sides are presented to form opposition in the story, two groups of characters create irony. It is ironic that the soldiers
who inhabit Jonesville–on–the Grande take little or no notice of the other residents, while the townspeople consider the soldiers a major part of their
lives, and even base their schedules on that of the nearby military post. "But whether we taunted or saluted, the distant men in khaki uniforms went
about their motions without noticing us at all," is an expression of disappointment made by the narrator (p. 275). The sadness the children feel is ironic
when it is paired with the idea that the soldiers exhibit no emotions. The soldiers are both oblivious to and uncaring about their influence on the

The Use of Humor in the Writings of Mark Twain
What is humor? With humor we think of something that is obvious, something that sticks out to us in a book or in a paper that makes us laugh. Samuel
Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, included numerous occasions of humor throughout his writings, though Mark Twain makes his humor very dry
and sometimes hard to tell that it is even there. Mark Twain, unlike most authors, includes humor in his writings without it being blatantly obvious.
In a small excerpt from an essay by Naomi Hori on humor in one of Twain's writings, she writes, "Let me clarify the features of Twain's laughter. His
way of evoking laughter is apparently by writing a book; there is no interaction between Twain and his readers. There is a time lag till readers laugh...

He believed that humor was the best way for people to deal with their anger and feelings towards different problems or issues. One writing that
Mark Twain is not as famous for, but is still a well known piece of work for showing the use of humor in his writings is, "The Celebrated Jumping
Frog of Calaveras County". This work starts off slow without much humor until later on in the writing. The humor picks up as Twain includes bits
of sarcasm to the mix. The humor in this short work is not so hidden or subtle as it may have been in some of Twain's other writings. One example
of this sort of dry humor is, "And Smiley says, sorter indifferent like, 'It might be a parrot, or it might be a canary, may be, but it an't it's only just a
frog.'" (Jumping Frog). This shows a side and type of writing that is not usually seen with Twain. Usually the humor in his writings was always sort
of hidden away and harder to pick out, but in this work, it is more obvious that he is trying to make it humorous. "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of
Calaveras County" may not be as widely known as some of Twain's other work, but it is a good example of how he includes humor into his writings to
catch the reader's attention and to provide some comic relief from, at times, tense situations.
Mark Twain is more known for one of the most controversial novels in American history, TheAdventures of Huckleberry Finn. This famous work

How Does Humor Use Humor?
For as long as I have been in school, there has been a negative stigma around laughing and making jokes in the classroom. As a potential psychology
major, I am quite fascinated with why our brains work the way they do, and how they grow, develop, and learn. That is why I was so intrigued when
research came out claiming that appropriate humor can be used as a tool in the classroom by alleviating anxiety, stress, and helping relate the content by
using funny, real world examples. When an instructor successfully uses humor, the learning environment that is created can be a catalyst for success.
Humor can alleviate anxiety, especially in second language classrooms. "First, Young (1991) argues that when students are asked to deliver their
thoughts or idea in a foreign language in which they have limited competence, their performance can be very threatening to their self–image" (Deb 2).
If you have taken a foreign language class, in which speaking in front of the class is required, you may have experienced the anxiety that comes along.
"Will I slur my words, pronounce something wrong, or choke under the pressure and not say anything at all?" Are all thoughts that come into many
second–language learners' minds. When humor is utilized correctly and gets a positive reaction from students, such as smiling and laughing, it creates
a light, non judgmental learning environment. In such environment, mistakes can be taken for what they are, instead of the person speaking thinking that

How Does Chaucer Use Humor In The Millers Tale
While you would be hard pressed to deny/ignore the heavily present humor in the Miller's Tale, which earns it the title of a fabliau, it is also equally
critical to consider the ways in which Chaucer contradicts these humorous moments with bouts of seriousness. Even though it is often difficult to
discern between what is light–hearted and fun compared to what is meaningful and moral telling in the Miller's Tale, identifying these moments of jest
and ernest along with their distinct purposes can help further readers understanding of what Chaucer might have intended as the overall take away of
the tale. Both moments of humor and seriousness, although contradictory, work together to highlight and draw attention to instances of significance,
which suggest small moral lessons. By examining the most prominent moments of humor and seriousness and trying to identify the specific moral or
reason for creating that situation, it is the hope that Chaucer's overall intention for the tale will be understood through... Show more content on

How Does Oscar Wilde Use Humor
In Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest there are multiple types of humor. Oscar Wilde was known for being quite humorous and he
shows this throughout the story. This story has grown to be very popular and has been made into countless stage productions and even three films.
The Importance of being Earnest can thank its humor and hysterical tone for making it into the widely known and loved play that it is today. One
type of humor that is found in The Importance of Being Earnest is inversion humor. Inversion humor is when someone goes against logical
reasoning and says expressions that make little to no sense at all. In inversion humor, the end of the phrase being said is typically the opposite of
what you expect to be said, and is very unpredictable. One of many instances where this type of humor is found is when Cecily says, "I don't like
novels that end happily. They depress me so much" (Wilde, Act II P.2311). As you can see she begins with saying she does not like happy endings and
then contradicts the meaning of the word happy and says that they depress her. There are numerous other instances where inversion humor is used and
it adds greatly to the tone of the story.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Some topics that are usually uncomfortable to talk about can be brought up and talked about when it used through the use of humor. Racism is a
prime example of this because you're not usually going to just start talking about racism in a conversation but if it is brought up in a joke people can

example of this because most the comedy videos uploaded in today's world will have some kind of rude or racist humor that jabs at someone or
some other race. One example would be with Key & Peele videos and how racist they are in their videos but what makes them different is that they
are trying to teach a lesson with their videos. Such as in their video named "Racist Zombies" when there is a zombie apocalypse and all the white

How Does Shakespeare Use Humor In Hamlet
William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is a tragedy that tells the unfortunate fate of a royal family. One would expect nothing but sadness in such a story.
However, this is not the case. Besides the story being a tragedy, Shakespeare uses humor as a hint to the characters of the tragedy that Hamlet has gone
"insane" due to the death of his father. Furthermore, humor serves as comic relief throughout the tragedy.
This humor is used to justify Hamlet's "madness" as it illustrates just what Hamlet has been dealing with in losing his father. Horatio tells Hamlet that
he and some guards have seen the ghost of King Hamlet. Curious, Hamlet waits the next night for the ghost. Sure enough it appears and tells Hamlet
that his uncle Claudius killed his father. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The events that happen before the graveyard scene are horrendous. Hamlet accidently kills Polonius after mistaking him with the Claudius, in which he
thought was the one behind the curtains in Gertrude's bedroom. The death of Polonius causes Ophelia to go nuts and eventually, she too dies.
Humor is used as comic relief as seen in the graveyard scene in Act V, scene 1 with Hamlet and the gravediggers. The diggers joke about the death
of Ophelia. While they're at it, Hamlet comes in and begins a conversation with one of the gravediggers. They begin to joke with each other when
Hamlet asked "Whose grave's this, sirrah?" (1092) in which the digger replies "Mine sir" (1092). Hamlet uses the word lie in many ways such as
lying on the ground or as in lying. He responded to the digger, "I think it be thine indeed, for thou liest in't" (1092). Shakespeare shows here that
Hamlet and the gravedigger are evenly clever with their use of puns, as they use them left and right. This here sets up a different scenario compared to
the rest of the story. It changes things up a bit by adding humor, while staying true to the original

great deal about the War of Roses to understand that there is some serious strife going on. However, if the reader takes some time to understand this
fascinating string of events, the story of Richard and his fall becomes much more interesting. In all of his brilliance, Shakespeare manages to toy with

However, the dialogue picks up again, and the bitterness continues. After she exits, they all talk to each other, pretty much asking, "what the heck was
that all about?"
The next scene also has some prime examples of humor in this play. Here, two murderers are sent to kill Clarence. The text is so rich in indirectly
describing the demeanor of these two, and the reader undoubtedly chuckles when reading the dialogue between the two of them. Primarily, the reader
sees this in lines 110–115: "I'll go back to the duke of Gloucester and tell him so. / Please, just wait a minute. I'm hoping my holy mood will pass. / It
usually only lasts about twenty seconds. / How are you feeling now? / Actually, I'm still feeling some pangs of conscience. / Even in modern times,
the idea of a conscience coming and going instead of being unwavering is funny. Even funnier is the thief being aware of this, and saying, "hang on,
it'll pass", as if his holy conscience were a case of bad gas or something like that. Further on, the two murderers talk about conscience, and how nobody
would listen to it even if it flew out of a wallet.
Of course, no Shakespeare play would be complete without the use of puns. Shakespeare uses this type of humor as a witty way to keep the dialogue
fresh and flowing. The reader gets a taste of these funny little bits as early as the first act and first scene, when Brakenbury starts, "With this, my lord,

The subjects in the plays tend to incorporate a double meaning with exaggerations, verbal plays, and imitating accents. The cartoons on TV do the same

the delusions brought on by the horrors therein. The pilgrimage Billy is on is broken up by milestones that read "so it goes". The journey is a vessel
for Vonnegut to show the reader how war can desensitize a man to death and cause him to recede into coping mechanisms, but that a man cannot be
desensitized to suffering. The use of "so it goes" accompanies all mentions of a death in the book, between the death of his own father, soldiers he

city–state. In the beginning of the movie, a fly gets into a tele–printer and changes up the last name of Harry Tuttle to Harry Buttle. Harry Tuttle is a

Essay on Use of Humor in Erdrich's Tracks
Use of Humor in Erdrich's Tracks
An old adage claims that laughter is the best medicine to cure human ailments. Although this treatment might sound somewhat unorthodox, its value as
a remedy can be traced back to ancient times when Hypocrites, in his medical treatise, stressed the importance of "a gay and cheerful mood on the part
of the physician and patient fighting disease" (Bakhtin 67). Aristotle viewed laughter as man's quintessential privilege: "Of all living creatures only man
is endowed with laughter" (Bakhtin 68). In the Middle Ages, laughter was an integral part of folk culture. "Carnival festivities and the comic spectacles
and ritual connected with them had an important place in the life of medieval ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
[in] a kind of personal tribalism that begins with two people, configurates around families, composes itself in extended kin and clan, and ends up
defining a culture" (Lincoln 63). In Tracks, the power of Native American humor to profoundly affect human experience is portrayed through the
characters of Nanapush and Fleur.
In his role as "Nanabush" the trickster, a central figure in Chippewa (Ojibwa) storytelling, Nanapush demonstrates the power of Native American
humor in his own life, when he challenges the gods and cheats death by playing a trick on them: "During the year of the sickness, when I was the
last one left, I saved myself by starting a story . . . . I got well by talking. Death could not get a word in edgewise, grew discouraged, and traveled on"
(Erdrich 46). The trickster figure is characterized as a man of many guises, dualistic in nature–good and bad–and often considered quite a lover. He is a
survivor, physically and psychologically. As one who endures, he transcends the temporal and functions as an affirmation of the self. The trickster is
also "central to the tribe's worldview," with power that extends beyond himself, guiding his people toward a view of themselves and of possibility that
they might not have seen otherwise (Ghezzi 444). To fulfill his role as trickster, Nanapush uses humor as powerful medicine not only for himself, but
also for his tribe.
Nanapush purposefully directs his own special brand of humor–raucous

How Does Roald Dahl Use Humor
Roald Dahl uses comedy and humor in many ways throughout many of his books and movies. The types of humor that he uses ranges from satire to
dark humor to low comedy. Roald Dahl adds comedy and humor to his books and movies to make them more interesting and funny. Humor also
emphasizes certain scenes or lines in a book making them stand out and more memorable. Roald Dahl puts humor and comedy into his books and
movies from experiences in his own life. This makes the funny and humorous lines or scenes more realistic and relatable. By using types of comedy
like physical humor, satire, and dark humor; Roald Dahl makes it so that the reader is anywhere from chuckling to rolling on the floor with laughter.
Roald Dahl uses physical humor a lot in books such as Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Some examples of when he uses physical
humor are in Matilda The Trunchbull takes a little girl by her pigtails and spins around in a hammer throw then letting go of the girl. The physical
humor in this is that The Trunchbull is throwing a girl by her pigtails and also when she is landing and she gets up perfectly happy and ok with a
bouquet of flowers. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the physical humor is when a chubby overweight boy gets shot up the chocolate tube "like a
bullet." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses satire in many ways to make scenes funny. In Matilda he portrayed the mean headmaster The Trunchbull as a plump mean old lady that had
warts. This was an exaggeration of the mean, nasty headmaster that he had when he went to boarding school. He used his personal experiences and
he used them for ideas in his books and movies. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was based off of his school where the students tested out newly
made chocolates and gave there feedback to the chocolate company. He used satire by making every candy and chocolate amazing, huge, and
punishing if the kids were to

How Does Jenny Allen Use Humor In The Trouble With Nature
In Jenny Allens essay "The Trouble With Nature" humor is utilized in order to entertain her sophisticated New Yorker audience by telling them the
dangers of going out into nature.
These paragraphs infrom the reader about what the writers purpose is because they are very detailed and specific on what Jenny Allen is going to talk
about and the point she is trying to get across with the troubles nature can cause. She says "Nature comes right inside, as if to prove some kind of
point" (Allen 1). She says this in the article because many city people want to go out to the country to experience the outdoors and be close to nature
when in reality nature is already right inside their homes. She also mentions "Mother nature at her most sublime" (Allen ... Show more content on

Jenny Allen uses much humor throughout this article to entertain her audience, which it does a good job at. She says "...they just keep whacking into
plate–glass windows, walls, and table lamps, unable to locate the tear in the porch screen or the open window that they flew in through two
minutes earlier" (Allen 7). In this quote she is making fun of birds not being able to find their way out after just entering the window or hole in the
screen door two minutes prior. Jenny Allen uses a very good and unique choice of words in this article, but one that really caught my eye was the
word "distressing" which she uses in paragraphs four, five, and six. She uses this word mainly when she talks about details in the animals she is
describing. For example she says "...another distressing detail, like the fur. Also, the wings are webbed, like a ducks feet, which makes some people
feel like they might vomit" (Allen 6). Not only is she using the word 'distressing' she is also using humor in that sentence talking about people going to
vomit. I think she uses the word 'distressing' multiple times because seeing animals in your home that are not suppose to be there may be a little

Kurt Vonnegut Use Of Black Humor In Billy Pilgrim's
Throughout history, the combination of war and literature has had a great effect on many people and has inspired them to bring about social reform.
Authors, like Kurt Vonnegut, perform this task effectively, for they express what they feel is important and what needs to be altered in people's lives.
Vonnegut is known for his black humor and satirical writings, and he, like many others, was inspired by war and created alternate, fantastical worlds
to bring attention to humanity's views on certain issues. He was able to use his observations and experiences to portray his views that would promote
his audience then and now to contemplate their beliefs and what was right and wrong; he did this especially well in his works relating to war. In

Throughout the book, Vonnegut switches from his own, first–person narration to Billy Pilgrim's third person narration which creates a "schizophrenic
manner" (Vonnegut Title Page) in which the book is told; this gives the reader a sense of the mental burden war is on those who experience it.
Furthermore, Vonnegut really pushes the probing of humanity's approval of war and its terrible consequences through the views of the
Tralfamadorians about the fluidity of time and predestination which impacts the structure of his plot. Billy Pilgrim's character is a perfect example of
how Vonnegut is pushing the questioning of society's acceptance of war and its unfortunate effects though his ability to take a negative and horrific
event and have it propel him into a positive past or present event right away. In like manner, the variance between Billy Pilgrim's setting in his calm,
New York home and his stressful time in Germany during World War II draws attention to Slaughterhouse
–Five's message about questioning war and its

Essay on Franz Kafka's Use of Humor
Franz Kafka's Use of Humor
Franz Kafka, born on July 3, 1883 in Bohemia, in the city of Prague, has been recognized as one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. His
works have been called "cloudy, mysterious, inexplicable" (Oates ix). Most people hear the term Kafkan or Kafkaesque and think of dark, fantastic
tales with almost no basis in our known reality. But what of Kafka's sense of humor? I personally laughed out loud several times while reading
Kafka's Amerika. Were these snippets of humor part of Kafka's plan or mere accidents?
According to Roy Pascal, author of Kafka's Narrators: A Study of His Stories and Sketches, "There is a good deal of humour in these early stories, as
in the novels and later stories, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Georg's father goes on to kick and yell at Georg extensively. Through this entire barrage and beating from his father the only thought that pops into
Georg's head is "he has pockets even in his shirt" (Kafka 86) referring to his father's nightshirt. This left turn from the heat of the moment is quirky
enough to give the reader pause and wonder what is going on. Such was Kafka's intent.
Another good example is in the novel Amerika. Here, protagonist Karl Rossman comes to at 3:00 am after a serious fight with two men, Robinson
and Delamarche, whom he met shortly after his arrival to the United States from Germany. He wanders out onto the balcony of the apartment he
is trapped in and makes the acquaintance of a student studying on the balcony next door. Karl discovers the student works at Montly's department
store all day and then studies and goes to school all night. When asked when he sleeps Karl hears, " 'Oh sleep!' said the student. 'I'll get some sleep
when I'm finished with my studies. I keep myself going on black coffee. A fine thing black coffee.' 'I don't like black coffee,' said Karl. 'I don't
either', said the student laughing. 'But what could I do without it? If it weren't for black coffee Montly wouldn't keep me for a minute. I simply don't
know how I would get on in the shop if I didn't have a big bottle like this under the counter, for I've never dared to risk stopping the
coffee–drinking...'" (Kafka 267). Why

How Does Gantos Use Humor In Dead End In Norvelt
In the book Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos, many unexpected things happen. He uses humor in many different ways throughout the book as a
way to connect the reader to the writing. This is a low comedy book, which means the jokes are in plain sight. Jack Gantos uses schadenfreude,
incongruity theory, and surreal comedy as a way to portray his hometown. Jack's nose bleeds are something that were funny throughout the book. The
reader first finds out about it on page 8 when it said "How could I forget? I was a nosebleeder. The moment something startled me or whenever I got
over excited or spooked about little anything blood would spray out of my nose holes like dragon flames" (Gantos). This connects to the universal truth
that humiliating things happen at the worst times. It is funny because it is so absurd and it happened at the worst times. At the beginning of the book,
Jack got in between his parents when his dad told him to mow down the corn and his mom told him to leave it. Since he mowed down the corn, his
mom grounded him for the whole summer. That is using schadenfreude because no one would think that someone would... Show more content on

First, the characters of Finding Dory reflect kinship and friendship among one another. Sometime after Finding Nemo, Dory recalls memories about her

Use Of Humor And Its Effect On Society
Some advertisements use humor to make the viewers want to rematch the advertisements and enjoy it as it gives off positive feelings. In other
occasions, ads like Spotify create a negative atmosphere to provoke the person to buy a Spotify membership since Spotify repeats the same
advertisement every thirty minutes of free music that is played. These two types of techniques are useful and effective since they drill the
commercial's purpose in the individual's mind even though they might receive different feedbacks. Another technique that commercials use is
bandwagon to sell their products. Snapchat and Instagram created a false life or society because most users now just use it to boast about their
accomplishments and display their somewhat unrealistic capacities. Some users utilize it to show off their lifestyles, others use it to display the
items that they purchased to show a false richness or life. Their admirable followers become loyal to them or disloyal to them, creating a rivalry
between the individuals. As a result, their social relationships and connections causes the followers to purchase the same products as their role models
or causes them to become competitive and want to purchase something of a higher value to brag about having a better life. It is also a way for people
to show their highlight feeds that avoids the outer–representation of having something. In other words, society's relationships depend on the usage of
products because it can destroy or create

How Does Shakespeare Use Humor In Twelfth Night
Humans have been on this planet for an estimated 200,000 years and yet we are still a cruel and immoral species that finds the pain and manipulation
of others amusing. Though the Twelfth Night written by William Shakespeare takes place 400 years ago the humor in it has not changed as people still
find humour in Sir Andrew's antics, laugh at Malvolio's imprisonment, and giggle at the misfortune of Antonio. The reason for that is simple; it is in
human nature to mock others.
One example of Sir Andrew's abuse comes from before his first line is spoken. Maria is reprimanding Sir Toby for his drinking and bringing is a knave
too woo lady Olivia Sir Toby reasons with her saying "Why, he has three thousand ducats a year." (theTwelfth Night, William Shakespeare 1.3.20) This
shows that Sir Toby does not care to reason that he has a kind heart or a fine personality but only wealth for drinking. Because of this fact Sir Toby
reveals his manipulation in the final act resulting in humour at Sir Andrews expense. Sir Toby is shown to be one of the main contributors to Sir
Andrew's manipulation like when Sir Andrew wishes to leave on the grounds that Olivia is being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Does Sylvia Plath Use Humor
Death is Funny: Sylvia Plath's Use of Humor in Lady Lazarus Humor and Sylvia Plath are words not generally heard in the same sentence. Although
her poetry is widely read, we as a society tend to associate her writing with the inherent darkness in her words, and we tend to ignore everything else,
particularly with regards to the poetry she wrote near the end of her life. The morbidity in her writing is most definitely there, but it is often expressed
using humor. I will be examining Plath's poem Lady Lazarus, and in particular the way that Plath uses humor throughout the poem through her use of
sarcasm, hyperbole and absurd comparisons, rhyme, and circus imagery. I will also be looking at the possible reasons why Plath uses humor
throughout Lady Lazarus, and what purpose it serves as a literary device. Plath's strong use of sarcasm is present in Lady Lazarus from the very first
lines of the poem; Plath writes: "I have done it again/One year in every ten/I manage it –" (Plath, 1–3). This opening stanza is very tongue–in–cheek, and
through the seemingly nondescript, nonchalant way she begins the poem, it sets up the first stanza as a foil for the next stanza, which begins: "A sort
of walking miracle, my skin/Bright as a Nazi lampshade," (4–5). The contrast between the content of the first and second stanzas gives the first stanza
a very sarcastic tone. It sets up the concept that death is no big deal to Plath; she's died every ten years. The opening line, "I have done

plot of the play. The scenes in this tragedy alternate between serious and humorous modes. This allows the characters to develop their emotions
and to react based on the jokes and puns often told by the minor characters. "Here's such a coil! come, what says Romeo?" (2.5.28). Juliet becomes
very frustrated when the Nurse uses comic relief to avoid telling her what Romeo said. This is often the outcome of comic relief in this play. The
frustration of Juliet is very amusing to the readers and the Nurse's comic relief provides more excitement for Juliet after anticipating the answer for

How Does Voltaire Use Humor In Candide

  • 1. How Does Voltaire Use Humor In Candide Comedy is often thought of as light–hearted humor; however, it can be used to incite thoughtful laughter– using a humorous situation to invoke reflection. Two examples of books that incite thoughtful laughter are: America (the Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction by Jon Stewart and Candide by Voltaire. The two authors usehumor to satirize how people think and the way they act and to incite the reader to actually think about the subject presented in their texts. In Candide, Voltaire uses dark humor and irony to attack philosophical optimism, government, religion, and human greed. Voltaire mainly attacks philosophical optimism– and this is seen through his character Pangloss, who believes that everything is the "best of all possible worlds" even after getting syphilis, being almost killed, and sold as a slave. When Pangloss states that a situation is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, when he told Candide that he contracted syphilis, he explained that it was a great thing because if they were never introduced to syphilis (which came from the Americas), then they would never have been introduced to chocolate. Voltaire uses understatement to refute Pangloss– through the character Candide, who, after facing some form of danger, starts to doubt his teacher's philosophy. In Chapter XVI, Candide and Cacambo are captured by Oreilons who plan to roast and eat them. Candide's reaction was to state "All is well, I won't argue about it...", but our mind tells us that being roasted alive and then eaten isn't fine and dandy. Voltaire throws in plenty of euphemisms throughout his book. One example is in Chapter II – Candide is inscripted to fight for the Bulgars. One the men he drinks with delivers an extravagant speech, and afterwards we learn about the harshness of warfare. Chapter VI– ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. How Does Mark Twain Use Humor In Huckleberry Finn Samuel Langhorne Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was born November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. Twain is known for his famous works such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which was his inspiration for the setting of these two classic novels. His childhood was not the brightest while living in Hannibal, and he incorporated the hardships he witnessed, as well as indured, into his writing with the use of humor. By doing so, Mark Twain became a famous American Literature author that impacted society by providing a new perspective of human nature through his use of humor in his writing. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer are two works ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His work has been exhibited and analyzed by people with all kinds of different perspectives. Although there are so many perspectives on his work, they are generally similar in the sense that most of the readers find his stories to be phenomenal. Today, he is praised for his contributions to literature. Famous author, Ernest Hemingway, even went so far as to announce that all modern American literature comes from Huckleberry Finn. However, critics were not always so accepting of his work. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is known as the first major novel in which the narrator speaks in dialect. This new style left some critics appalled by the sudden change in literature that would be initiated by Twain."If Mr. [Samuel] Clemens [Mark Twain] cannot think of something better to tell our pure–minded lads and lasses, he'd best stop writing for them," wrote, Louisa May Alcott, the author of Little ... Satire and Humor is a Vital Function of our Society Humor and satire is an entertaining and extremely effective method for highlighting social ideologies, challenging a governmental system or an organization, exposing injustice, and encouraging positive change in perspective. In his book, Status Anxiety, Alain de Botton asserts that humorists are a vital part of society as they are always successful in communicating, conveying, and delivering their message or idea to the public and the community. Humorists and satirists have demonstrated their vital role in inspiring freedom of speech and thought, which motivates progressive changes, in political election campaigns hosted on TV almost daily, and in Mark Twain's satire of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Comedians occasionally and intentionally use offensive and insulting comments to get their message across, however, these statements normally include protected opinions and beliefs about certain issues and global topics. By orally speaking or writing their ideas and beliefs, satirists and comedians act as an example for the public to use their freedom of speech and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For him to satirize the South's living standards and lifestyle, Mark Twain speaks up and supportsAfrican American's human rights and freedoms, which probably led African Americans and later women to fight for their political (voting rights, public offices), social (role in society), and economical (equal job wages) ... Mark Twain was widely known for his books, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventure of Tom Sawyer, but many didn't know for being America's best humorist. Twain always finds a way to embrace his sense of humor on many touching subjects like death. He often joked about how dreadful the world would be if we were to continue to live forever. He gives us a new perspective on death through his quote. "The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time." • 5. How Does Jenny Allen Use Humor In The Trouble With Nature In Jenny Allen's essay "The Trouble With Nature" humor is utilized in order to entertain through the use of tones, such as sarcasm, and silly imagery. The opening and closing paragraphs best introduce this humor. Jenny introduces comedic irony through the end of the introduction. She says, "They needn't go outdoors to get close to nature. Nature comes right inside" (Allen 1). It is funny to the reader, signaling the tone and aim of the rest of the article. Because of its nature, the conclusion also shows this. For example, "Many... begin to consider the option of living in the out–of–doors, where creatures keep to themselves" (Allen 13). This, again, uses irony and sarcasm to, this time, sum up the humor of the rest of the article. Although, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Within the Catcher in the Rye, humor is used to connect to the reader with its more pessimistic and negative concepts, such as depression and suicidal thoughts. The use of comedy as the tone makes the book cheerfully appealing and relatable, demonstrating how it contributes to the overall meaning and effect. Humor within the book allows for the negative concepts to be present, but at the same time makes the book cheerfully appealing. • 7. Essay about Emily Dickinson's Use of Humor and Irony Emily Dickinson's Use of Humor and Irony While much of Emily Dickinson's poetry has been described as sad or morose, the poetess did use humor and irony in many of her poems. This essay will address the humor and/ or irony found in five of Dickinson's poems: "Faith" is a Fine Invention, I'm Nobody! Who are you?, Some keep the Sabbath Going to Church and Success Is Counted Sweetest. The attempt will be made to show how Dickinson used humor and / or irony for the dual purposes of comic relief and to stress an idea or conclusion about her life and environment expressed by the poetess in the respective poem. The most humorous or ironic are some of the shorter poems, such as the four lined stanzas of "Faith" is a Fine Invention and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This poem may be partially auto–biographical in nature. Dickinson made few attempts during her life to be taken as more than an armature poetess. On one occasion, she sent a collection of her poems to a correspondent who was also a published poet. His criticism of the poems devastated Dickinson, and she never made another attempt towards publishing her works. In Success..., Dickinson reflects on the nature of success and how, ironically, it can be best appreciated and understood by those who have not achieved it and have no taste of it. As in "Faith"..., Dickinson powerfully presents her thoughts in a few lines. The poem deals only with one, ironic but universal, idea in its short length. It is the bitterness expressed at this irony (as found it Dickinson's juxtaposition of the words sweetest and sorest, separated by two lines) that is most felt by the reader. While the previous poem expresses the poetess' bitterness and sorrow with one aspect of her life, I'm Nobody! Who Are You? uses humor without irony to address another. In this poem, Dickinson style appears almost child –like in its of descriptions including frogs and bogs, as well as the lively energy expressed by the poem through its use of dashes and brief wording. Dickinson seems to be addressing her spinster, hermit–like existence (I'm Nobody) and her preference to it. The poetess seems to relate that her situation has not left ... • 8. Neuropsychological Use Of Humor In Therapy What comes to mind when you hear the word, "humor?" Some may think jokes while others would say standup comedy or a show that makes them laugh, but would therapy be the first thing that came into an individual's mind? Many Neuropsychological benefits have been found in humor and is now being used in therapy around the world. Humor can be used in a more serious matter. Humor in therapy is prescribed by doctors and can replace the use for pain killers and narcotics allowing patients to naturally cope with diseases, old age and intervention. Humor in therapy, although most popular today, can be traced back all the way to 1962. According to Dr. William F. • 9. Use of Tone, Irony and Humor in The Hammon and the Beans... Use of Tone, Irony and Humor in The Hammon and the Beans Ernest Hemingway once explained, "A writer's problem does not change. He himself changes and the world he lives in changes but his problem remains the same. It is always how to write truly and having found what is true, to project it in such a way that it becomes a part of the experience of the person who reads it." The attitude and "projection" with which the author creates a story is the tone. The second purpose for the inclusion of contradictory statements is to enlighten the reader about the narrator's emotions versus those of other characters. The impression the reader obtains of how the narrator views the house and setting is predominantly positive, while the opinion his mother has of the house is severely negative. "My mother hated it, especially because of the pigeons that cooed all day about the eaves. They had fleas, she said (p.274)." The tone of opposition created by presenting both positive and negative aspects of the ideas in the story, enables the reader to gain a clear image of the setting, and to examine both sides of the story. Similar to the way in which two sides are presented to form opposition in the story, two groups of characters create irony. It is ironic that the soldiers who inhabit Jonesville–on–the Grande take little or no notice of the other residents, while the townspeople consider the soldiers a major part of their lives, and even base their schedules on that of the nearby military post. "But whether we taunted or saluted, the distant men in khaki uniforms went about their motions without noticing us at all," is an expression of disappointment made by the narrator (p. 275). The sadness the children feel is ironic when it is paired with the idea that the soldiers exhibit no emotions. The soldiers are both oblivious to and uncaring about their influence on the ... • 10. The Use of Humor in the Writings of Mark Twain What is humor? With humor we think of something that is obvious, something that sticks out to us in a book or in a paper that makes us laugh. Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, included numerous occasions of humor throughout his writings, though Mark Twain makes his humor very dry and sometimes hard to tell that it is even there. Mark Twain, unlike most authors, includes humor in his writings without it being blatantly obvious. In a small excerpt from an essay by Naomi Hori on humor in one of Twain's writings, she writes, "Let me clarify the features of Twain's laughter. His way of evoking laughter is apparently by writing a book; there is no interaction between Twain and his readers. There is a time lag till readers laugh... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He believed that humor was the best way for people to deal with their anger and feelings towards different problems or issues. One writing that Mark Twain is not as famous for, but is still a well known piece of work for showing the use of humor in his writings is, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". This work starts off slow without much humor until later on in the writing. The humor picks up as Twain includes bits of sarcasm to the mix. The humor in this short work is not so hidden or subtle as it may have been in some of Twain's other writings. One example of this sort of dry humor is, "And Smiley says, sorter indifferent like, 'It might be a parrot, or it might be a canary, may be, but it an't it's only just a frog.'" (Jumping Frog). This shows a side and type of writing that is not usually seen with Twain. Usually the humor in his writings was always sort of hidden away and harder to pick out, but in this work, it is more obvious that he is trying to make it humorous. "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" may not be as widely known as some of Twain's other work, but it is a good example of how he includes humor into his writings to catch the reader's attention and to provide some comic relief from, at times, tense situations. • 11. How Does Humor Use Humor? For as long as I have been in school, there has been a negative stigma around laughing and making jokes in the classroom. As a potential psychology major, I am quite fascinated with why our brains work the way they do, and how they grow, develop, and learn. That is why I was so intrigued when research came out claiming that appropriate humor can be used as a tool in the classroom by alleviating anxiety, stress, and helping relate the content by using funny, real world examples. When an instructor successfully uses humor, the learning environment that is created can be a catalyst for success. Humor can alleviate anxiety, especially in second language classrooms. "First, Young (1991) argues that when students are asked to deliver their thoughts or idea in a foreign language in which they have limited competence, their performance can be very threatening to their self–image" (Deb 2). If you have taken a foreign language class, in which speaking in front of the class is required, you may have experienced the anxiety that comes along. "Will I slur my words, pronounce something wrong, or choke under the pressure and not say anything at all?" Are all thoughts that come into many second–language learners' minds. When humor is utilized correctly and gets a positive reaction from students, such as smiling and laughing, it creates a light, non judgmental learning environment. In such environment, mistakes can be taken for what they are, instead of the person speaking thinking that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. How Does Chaucer Use Humor In The Millers Tale While you would be hard pressed to deny/ignore the heavily present humor in the Miller's Tale, which earns it the title of a fabliau, it is also equally critical to consider the ways in which Chaucer contradicts these humorous moments with bouts of seriousness. Even though it is often difficult to discern between what is light–hearted and fun compared to what is meaningful and moral telling in the Miller's Tale, identifying these moments of jest and ernest along with their distinct purposes can help further readers understanding of what Chaucer might have intended as the overall take away of the tale. Both moments of humor and seriousness, although contradictory, work together to highlight and draw attention to instances of significance, which suggest small moral lessons. By examining the most prominent moments of humor and seriousness and trying to identify the specific moral or reason for creating that situation, it is the hope that Chaucer's overall intention for the tale will be understood through... • 13. How Does Oscar Wilde Use Humor In Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest there are multiple types of humor. Oscar Wilde was known for being quite humorous and he shows this throughout the story. This story has grown to be very popular and has been made into countless stage productions and even three films. The Importance of being Earnest can thank its humor and hysterical tone for making it into the widely known and loved play that it is today. One type of humor that is found in The Importance of Being Earnest is inversion humor. Inversion humor is when someone goes against logical reasoning and says expressions that make little to no sense at all. In inversion humor, the end of the phrase being said is typically the opposite of what you expect to be said, and is very unpredictable. One of many instances where this type of humor is found is when Cecily says, "I don't like novels that end happily. They depress me so much" (Wilde, Act II P.2311). As you can see she begins with saying she does not like happy endings and then contradicts the meaning of the word happy and says that they depress her. Youtube is a great example of this because most the comedy videos uploaded in today's world will have some kind of rude or racist humor that jabs at someone or some other race. One example would be with Key & Peele videos and how racist they are in their videos but what makes them different is that they are trying to teach a lesson with their videos. Such as in their video named "Racist Zombies" when there is a zombie apocalypse and all the white people in the world are turned into zombies but there are no black zombies because they aren't attacked. The point behind that video is that they are trying to teach about racism and how bad it is looked upon but they use comedy to somewhat mask the pain from the racism but still get a point ... • 16. How Does Shakespeare Use Humor In Hamlet William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is a tragedy that tells the unfortunate fate of a royal family. One would expect nothing but sadness in such a story. However, this is not the case. Besides the story being a tragedy, Shakespeare uses humor as a hint to the characters of the tragedy that Hamlet has gone "insane" due to the death of his father. Furthermore, humor serves as comic relief throughout the tragedy. This humor is used to justify Hamlet's "madness" as it illustrates just what Hamlet has been dealing with in losing his father. Horatio tells Hamlet that he and some guards have seen the ghost of King Hamlet. Curious, Hamlet waits the next night for the ghost. Sure enough it appears and tells Hamlet that his uncle Claudius killed his father. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The events that happen before the graveyard scene are horrendous. Hamlet accidently kills Polonius after mistaking him with the Claudius, in which he thought was the one behind the curtains in Gertrude's bedroom. The death of Polonius causes Ophelia to go nuts and eventually, she too dies. Humor is used as comic relief as seen in the graveyard scene in Act V, scene 1 with Hamlet and the gravediggers. The diggers joke about the death of Ophelia. While they're at it, Hamlet comes in and begins a conversation with one of the gravediggers. They begin to joke with each other when Hamlet asked "Whose grave's this, sirrah?" (1092) in which the digger replies "Mine sir" (1092). Hamlet uses the word lie in many ways such as lying on the ground or as in lying. He responded to the digger, "I think it be thine indeed, for thou liest in't" (1092). Shakespeare shows here that Hamlet and the gravedigger are evenly clever with their use of puns, as they use them left and right. This here sets up a different scenario compared to the rest of the story. It changes things up a bit by adding humor, while staying true to the original ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Use of Humor in Richard Iii by Shakespeare The Use of Humor in Richard III There is no doubt that Shakespeare was the author of great pieces of literature during an interesting time period. Given the circumstances, he was indeed mastering his craft during a very tumultuous juncture in British history. When one reads Richard III, they don't necessarily have to know a great deal about the War of Roses to understand that there is some serious strife going on. However, if the reader takes some time to understand this fascinating string of events, the story of Richard and his fall becomes much more interesting. After she exits, they all talk to each other, pretty much asking, "what the heck was that all about?" The next scene also has some prime examples of humor in this play. Here, two murderers are sent to kill Clarence. The text is so rich in indirectly describing the demeanor of these two, and the reader undoubtedly chuckles when reading the dialogue between the two of them. Primarily, the reader sees this in lines 110–115: "I'll go back to the duke of Gloucester and tell him so. / Please, just wait a minute. I'm hoping my holy mood will pass. / It usually only lasts about twenty seconds. / How are you feeling now? / Actually, I'm still feeling some pangs of conscience. / Even in modern times, the idea of a conscience coming and going instead of being unwavering is funny. Even funnier is the thief being aware of this, and saying, "hang on, it'll pass", as if his holy conscience were a case of bad gas or something like that. Further on, the two murderers talk about conscience, and how nobody would listen to it even if it flew out of a wallet. Of course, no Shakespeare play would be complete without the use of puns. The novel guides us through the experiences of a man on a journey in both directions of time, through war, and the delusions brought on by the horrors therein. The pilgrimage Billy is on is broken up by milestones that read "so it goes". The journey is a vessel for Vonnegut to show the reader how war can desensitize a man to death and cause him to recede into coping mechanisms, but that a man cannot be desensitized to suffering. Aristotle viewed laughter as man's quintessential privilege: "Of all living creatures only man is endowed with laughter" (Bakhtin 68).
