Water is an important resource.
 People use water for drinking, farming &
cooking.



People also swim, fish & play in water too.
Can we drink from the water which we swim in?

- Of course not, because they are different types of water.
Water resources


We have two types of water resources:

1) Fresh water resources: The type of water
used for drinking.
2) Salt water resources: The type of water
which is not used for drinking.


It’s found in rivers, ponds, lakes & streams.


Glaciers, Ice bergs & Sea ice are also examples
of fresh water although this water is frozen.


Also “ground water” water that is held in
rocks below the ground is a kind of fresh
water.
This kind of water is not used for drinking.
 Most of the earth’s water is salty water like:
Oceans & Seas.

Well, water gets
to us through
many ways, let’s
see

Mum, How do we
get the water we
drink from the
rivers to our home?
How do people get water?

Aqueducts

Reservoirs

Wells
Aqueducts


They are pipes that carry water to where it is
needed.
Reservoirs


In some places, people build a wall “Dam”
across a river & water gathers behind it.
Wells
They are deep holes that people dig to reach
the underground water.
 These wells are filled with the underground
water & then we pump it out.

Do you think we can drink water directly from the river?
Of course not, As this water is not clean yet
Treating water
To treat water, is to make water safe & clean
for people to drink
Water from rivers & lakes may contain very harmful
materials, that’s why we have to clean water & treat it first
before we drink it
Steps of treating water
Step (1):

Water sit still in a tank, so heavy
things in the water fall in the
bottom of the tank.
Step (2):

Water move to layers of sand &
gravel, these layers trap mud &
tiny things
Step (3):

Then chemicals are added to kill
any harmful things in the water
Step (4):

Clean water is then pumped to
people
Water pollution
-

-

Water pollution happens when harmful things
get into water.

Pollution makes living things sick.
Types of pollution

Natural pollution

Man – made pollution

Happens naturally

Happens because of
people
Natural pollution
-

Rain washes pollutants “like: dust”
from air & land into the water.
Man-made pollution
-

-

People use fertilizers to help plants to grow.

These fertilizers soak into the ground &
pollute ground water.
Conserving resources


Conserving resources is to
use resources wisely, so
they can last for a longer
time.
Ride your bicycle instead of the car whenever you can.
This can conserve fossil fuels
Turn down the heater & wear a sweater, if it’s cold.

This can conserve fossil fuels
Turn off the lights when leaving a room.
This can conserve fossil fuels
Turn off the water tap while brushing your teeth.
This can conserve water
Plant trees & other plants.
This can protect the soil & helps put oxygen back to the air
Dispose your trash & chemicals properly.
This can protect land & water

How do we use air & water
