Greta Tom is applying to the MAUS Arts in Transformation program to further her education in using the arts for social change. She grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania and studied international studies in college, after initially wanting to be a musician. She spent time in Amsterdam, Nicaragua, and other places working with refugees and marginalized communities. In Nicaragua, she rediscovered her love of music and saw how the arts can improve self-esteem and resilience. She now wants to learn more about using arts and education for youth and community development through the MAUS program.

Pablo Sáinz Villegas is a renowned classical guitarist who is appearing with the Oregon Symphony from October 25-27, 2014. He was inspired to take up the guitar after seeing Andrés Segovia perform as a child. Villegas has toured over 30 countries, winning awards for his performances. He founded the non-profit Music Without Borders Legacy in 2007 to share classical music with children, hoping to inspire positive values. For his upcoming performances with the Oregon Symphony, Villegas looks forward to collaborating with music director Carlos Kalmar and sharing his Spanish musical heritage.

Modern dance philosophy
Isadora Duncan was an early pioneer of modern dance in the early 20th century. She believed dance should be a natural expression of the soul through movement, rejecting rigid ballet styles. Marija Magazinovic was influenced by Duncan's philosophies after taking her dance classes, and went on to establish modern dance in Serbia. She developed a philosophy that movement should express the harmony of the individual through pure, abstract forms inspired by Greek styles. Both Duncan and Magazinovic viewed dance as a means of liberating and empowering women through spontaneity and freedom of expression.

Session One: 'Setting Expectations: a DEIA Primer,' was held June 6, 2024.A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 2. From Jefferson, PA To Managua To Amsterdam
- 3. Jefferson , PA I grew up in a very small town . WVU I went to college to become a musician , but graduated instead with a BA in International Studies . For 5 years, I stopped playing music . Amsterdam 1 year I met refugees from around the world and became more aware of issues relating to urban poverty . Managua 3 years I came to Nicaragua to learn from another culture and explore God’s call for social justice . I also returned to music .
- 4. In Managua , the Mennonite Central Committee sent me to the Centro Cultural Batahola Norte (CCBN). The CCBN mission is to build the kingdom of God by empowering women and youth through education .
- 5. I began teaching oboe and piano lessons, which convinced me that the arts can help improve self-esteem and resilience .
- 6. (Occasionally, explanations of musical concepts also require appropriate facial expressions .)
- 7. Learning about Popular Education and Theater of the Oppressed methodologies has helped me combine my passions for the arts and social justice .
- 8. Last year, I participated in an arts camp using Build A Bridge techniques with children from marginalized communities in Chinandega, Nicaragua .
- 9. In Managua , I began singing in a choir …
- 10. … playing oboe in the Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (Orquesta Juvenil Filarmónica) …
- 11. … and even sometimes performing with the Nicaraguan National Orchestra.
- 12. I n Nicaragua , I rediscovered my love of music and gained more confidence in my identity as a musician . I also began to learn about the role of arts and education in youth formation and community development .
- 13. But I need to learn more!
- 14. And I think the MAUS program would help me reach my goal of learning how to use the arts to bring about social change , seeking to build the kingdom of God on the ruins of a broken world .
