Used as a tool to:
• Improve understanding of digital fluency
• Define the digital skills training offerings
• Identify the digital skills employers are looking for
• Identify gaps in the training provision
• Be a starting point for designing activities

Jisc Digital Capabilities tool
• Library staff piloted the Jisc Digital Capabilities tool
– Series of group workshops looking holistically at their “digital day”
– Outcomes were mapped against the Digital Fluency framework
• Staff found it a useful exercise
– Wanted more customisation for their role in the activity and
outcomes
– Not much after support available at the time.
• Since this pilot, Jisc have developed this further tool and support & we are
thinking of using it for Professional Services Staff in the future

• Courses & assessment are entirely online to enable widest
accessibility (in-person support available at Lancaster campus)
• Integrated with Lancaster Award
• Extremely positive feedback so far

  • 3. #jiscexperts17 • Globally significant • Consistently within top 10 in UK, top 100 in world Strategic Plan 2020 • Digital Fluency: Ensuring our staff and students have the digital skills they need • Digital Fluency is an enabler to help achieve goals Digital Lancaster 2014, refreshed 2016)( • Oversee development and implementation of Digital Fluency activities • Range of members for inclusive approach • Disbanded in November 2016 Digital Fluency Steering Group (DFSG) from 2015 Digital skills development: helping the individual and organisation succeed in a digital world

Identifying digital skills people need Created Lancaster Digital Fluency Framework • Based on Jisc’s six elements of digital capability • One page overview Used as a tool to: • Improve understanding of digital fluency • Define the digital skills training offerings • Identify the digital skills employers are looking for • Identify gaps in the training provision • Be a starting point for designing activities #jiscexperts17

Jisc Digital Capabilities tool • Library staff piloted the Jisc Digital Capabilities tool – Series of group workshops looking holistically at their “digital day” – Outcomes were mapped against the Digital Fluency framework • Staff found it a useful exercise – Wanted more customisation for their role in the activity and outcomes – Not much after support available at the time. • Since this pilot, Jisc have developed this further tool and support & we are thinking of using it for Professional Services Staff in the future #jiscexperts17

Improving Visibility: Digital is no longer a separate function Learning & Skills Development Online Learning and Skills Development hub 4 pods in the Learning Zone repurposed Trial Lynda.com online learning 4 PCs in the Learning Zone, 2 PCs in HR People want to use on their computer, with their software Digital Skills Training for all Improved training provision Improved Website navigation #jiscexperts17

Digital Skills Certificate • Built around the Digital Fluency framework • Aiming initially at students, giving skills for study at Lancaster and skills for employability • Lancaster Digital Certificate issued to prove Digital Skills to employers – via electronic badges and on HEAR transcript • Courses & assessment are entirely online to enable widest accessibility (in-person support available at Lancaster campus) • Integrated with Lancaster Award • Extremely positive feedback so far #jiscexperts17

Brief background #jiscexperts17 19 projects last year across departments, a further 9 this year Students become digital ambassadors and work with an academic to develop digital uses in teaching & learning Projects aim to improve teaching & learning, share experiences & lesson learned to inspire others Bursary of £800 for the student

Moving forward Imminent future, prioritise: • Scheduled training sessions • Online digital courses • Student Digital Projects Coming soon: • Discuss the future of Lynda.com • New dot.everything website • Equivalent of Learning Skills website for staff development New developments wish list: • Online Digital Skills Certificate for Professional Services staff • Embed digital within staff development programmes • HR interested in using digital skills profiles as part of staff appraisals and identifying digital skills requirements in Job Descriptions/Personal Specifications • Resource Lists as well as Reading Lists #jiscexperts17
