1. Magazine Cover Analysis
This magazinecover is from Entertainment weekly, focusing on the then new horror filmScream4, published on the 15th
April 2011.
Entertainment Weekly is an American magazine published by the notorious Time Inc., covering film, television, theatre, books and pop
culture.
The masthead of this magazine uses the typical style of the Entertainment Weekly
magazines, which consists of a bold sans serif font usually in distinct colours to help
catch the audience’s eye, towards the top of the page. In addition to this the ‘Weekly’
part of the masthead is placed inside of the bold title in a black font to give the
masthead an abstract look which is unique to the magazine. Above the masthead is the
pinnacle information of the magazine, consisting of the price and date which is included
to benefit the audience and to inform them of the issue’s main details. However, to
ensure that these facts do not divert the reader’s attention this is in a small font that is
discrete yet still visible.
The selling points of the magazine are above the masthead which has been strategically
placed to make sure that they can still be seen even when amongst other magazines,
using a combination of a bold, sans serif font and a delicate serif font. The mixture of
these two fonts makes the selling points stand out in different ways which makes the
audience more likely to take the time to read them and therefore buy the magazine. A
faint line is used to separate the different selling lines to eliminate confusion and to
make them as effective as possible without taking the attention away from the
masthead.
The main image on the cover is a medium close up shot of the recognisable mask used
in the scream tetralogy with fairly low key lighting to create shades on the mask,
emphasising the mystery within the film(s).The background of the image uses a soft
transition of colour from red/burgundy to black, these colours together represent fear,
red symbolising blood and black being commonly associated with death and evil, which
gives the audience an idea of the genre and basis of the film. This combination of
colours and image will create curiosity within the audience meaning they are more likely
to purchase the magazine to find out more.
The cover lines are situated towards the bottom of the cover on the right hand side,
avoiding the character in the main image. The font used for these is a sans serif font
which goes between a normal and a bold font, making the information more interesting
to read for the audience. However, the sizing of these cover lines varies, going from
large to small which makes them more effective and encourages the reader to purchase
the magazine.
