Social Media has rocked my world. It put me on a fast track to living my Ultimate Career Lifestyle. I’m convinced there is no way we could’ve done what we’ve done with Talent Revolution in the last year without it. The cover of this magazine says “Make sure you’re Linkedin, Twittering or Facing Up to Facebook or your lose out. If you believe in the philosophy that in the 21 st Century Your IP, Your Personal Brand and your Network will determine your Net Worth then you can’t afford NOT to engage in Social Media. These days your NETWORK is your only REAL form of Career Security. Social Media gives you the tools to build that network more powerful than ever before
Ultimately what SM has done for me has given me a boatload of Social Currency. That’s given me influence and allowed me to position myself as a thought leader in our industry on this topic among others.
To really get SM you need to first understand that the web as we know it is changing. Its transforming from an online library / billboard into a highly interactive universe where people are engaging in conversations 24/7.
Social Media is people having conversations online. Compare it to a cocktail party or networking event. The platforms Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin they are communities, places where people hang out. Like real life networking some places are more casual some more professional. I recommend having someone who’s been there before show you around, introduce you. Then just hang out for a while Listening. And when your ready jump in the conversation
You maybe surprised to learn just who’s networking online. The answer is everyone. Read slide.

There’s a misperception that Social Media only appeals to teenagers or gen y. You might be surprised to learn who’s actually using social media. Read stats on the slide.
The Team at Talent Revolution created a Social Media Guide for you that will take you through a lot of the basics. You’ll receive the guide for attending this webinar. Here are some of the guidelines from the guide that we recommend using in all SM communities: Review Rules of Engagement below. Always remember the “social” in Social Media. Be yourself. Unlike other media, it’s the personal interactions that set it apart, so your unique personality, your authenticity should shine through. Also a good rule of thumb is to behave in any social, online interaction applying the same rules you would in a live social gathering. Next … Remember that publishing content is literal. Your grandchildren will be able to view everything you’ve ever done online. Keep that in mind. Use good judgment. Understand that you can’t approach SM like TM. Broadcasting your messages, advertisments in an online community will get you voted off of the island quick. Remember, you must invest in giving and building relationships to have what we call Social Currency before you pursue real currency. It’s a good idea before you begin to develop a Social Media strategy and guidelines. Then energize others to spread the word.

Kat Intro
Kat If you have your own blog you can set up RSS feeds to send your blog updates to each of the communities that you belong to – remember, on way to increase web visability is to have all links feed together
Facebook is Largest Social Networking site on the internet and therefore one of the most important places to begin when establishing your presence in social media. A Common misperception about facebook is that it’s for college kids. While it started out as a place for students from Harvard as I mentioned before over half of its users are outside of college. 1 in 4 internet users is on FB. With over 175 million users nearly 2/3 of those users being women. hopes To Be The Global SNOS (social network operating system) Review the Cover Titles.
If you haven’t already you’ll want to join FB and set up a profile. The SM guide you’ll receive will provide you with resources for how to do this step by step. Generally, users add friends, send them messages, and update their personal profiles w/ text, links, photos, and videos to keep everyone up to date on their recent activities. Review features on the page. . Home tab, Profile page, Private Inbox Messages, Public Wall Post Here is a good example of what to post on your wall. Review items posted on Kat’s wall.
Here is a great example of what NOT to post on your profile. Remember everything communicates and use good judgment before posting. Also know that if you are tagged in a photo that SOMEONE else post you can easily un-tag and remove that photo from your page. Don’t ask me how I found that out?
Social Media Communities like FB allow you to interact with people you normally wouldn’t have easy access to. I have many online mentors I’ve been able to connect and interact with people like Bob Burge the Best Selling Author of the Go-Giver. Here is a message Bob left me just the other day. Now we’ve never met in real life BUT through these online networks we’ve interacted and have developed a mutual admiration for one another. It benefits me because I learn from Bob and I help him when I tell all my friends and followers to join his fan page. Only in SM could we remind each other of our exisnse daily. I guarantee you that Bob would be less open to me calling him every day to share with him which airport I’m in or what I had for breakfast…
After you get a 16 year old mentor to help you establish your Personal Profile page, the first step to building a presence on FB for your company is to create a FB fan page. A fan Page is a customizable presence for an organization, product, or public personality to interact with FB users. Pages are different from Personal profiles and Groups bcause they were designed to specifically help companies interact with their customers. The success of any page relies on a steady stream of content posted by the page administrators as well as by offering continuous opp for fans to interact w/ the brand. One most important features of FP is that post made on the page appear in the Fan’s News Feed which is the first thing a user sees after logging into FB. One thing I’d like to point out is how the avatar they use is a smiling face with the company logo. People online will connect better to a face than just a logo… this is a great compromise to one vs the other.

Here is a great example of how Sodexo is using a FB fan page for Recruiting. Explain. Again part of it’s awesomeness is the fact that they have the faces of their recruiters here. So then when they respond below you recognize them immediately.
Now Twitter def has created some hype recently. Last month it made the cover of time magazine who talked about how Twitter will change the way we live. I can remember seeing the first picture of the plan that landed on the Hudson river on twitter before it hit the news. More recently I heard about the death of MJ from a tweet. I noticed that MJ was a trending conversation in twitters cloud. In one click I was able to tune into that conversation and hear what everyone was saying. I saw links to a blog on TMZ that gave confirmed. Twitter has become a major news source for what’s been going on in Iran and the reporters, everyday people there.
The news is reporting about reporting news from twitter and telling you to join the conversation. The other important thing to understand about why twitter is getting so much hype is it delivers something that google can’t. Search about what p are saying in real time about any topic.
And when she says it’s on!
And get’s on… You know it’s a big deal. But let me warn you. Twitter is the worst first impression in the world. You get all pumped up, Time Mag/CNN says to do it, Oprah’s doing it … so your like ok, I’m pumped and I’m jumping in the game. So you type in the url www.twitter.com….
Here are the 5 Stages of Twitter Acceptance. Read.
And this is what you get… This stupid bird with this elementary illustration of clouds in the background. But you sign up anyways.. You pick a username, load a picture, write a brief bio and then it ask
And you’re like ??? “learning to tweet” or since you’re a newbie it’s probably more like “sending out a twit” then you hit send expecting some fire works and there’s nothing… no magic. So a lot of people say this is stupid and dismiss it there
Like linked in most all SN have search, and import contact features.
Twitter will also recommend people and brands to follow to get you started.
Another way to find followers is by usining Twitter search to search topics that appeal to you. explain
There’s a lot of Power in Twitter just ask Whole Foods. Who here couldn’t benefit from 890,000 fans and followers wanting to engage with you? What I recommend is follow some successful brands, follow some people you admire, listen watch and learn Avery’s going to walk us thru the basics…
Kat – ask Amanda to comment on Arie/Sodexo Amanda, you’ve connected with Arie and even interviewed her on Talent Revolution – what is so brand-significant about this page and Arie as a Sodexo Executive?
Keep in mind when you start engaging in online social networks that the same networking rules that apply offline apply online. Here are a few of the benefits you will receive from online networking. By engaging to your existing offline network online you can easily stay in touch building and maintaining stronger relationships. By engaging in professional online groups communities you will meet new people online that you will already have an established relationship with when you eventually meet face to face.
Here is an example. I typed in recruiting….
Explain the how of Bringing your network online, looking up people you know…
Now this explains building your online network with people you know. Lets talk about meeting new people
The best way to meet new people online is find the communities where people who share your same interest hang out. Join them and participate in the discussion. Here’s how you find groups on linked in
You can browse through members to find other people you know and by clicking on their profile name you it will give you the option to invite them to connect
Joining groups has no value until you join in the discussion. By joining in the discussion you start to establish a virtual presence in that community

Kat – introduce and ask Amanda to describe Recruiting Blogs & Talent Revolution – how it helps people leverage their personal brand within their industry
Ask Avery to discuss FOHBOH
Now it’s important to communicate the communities that you are a part of and let people chose where they would like to connect with you. You can do this in many ways. On your website, email signature, business card or looking them up in these communities which we’ll demonstrate now using linked in as our example
Here are 10 ways social media can help you travel less but do more: from a Harvard Business Publishing’s Blog: 3/2009 1. Have network, will travel. Nurture a national or international network of contacts in the cities you visit on a recurring basis. Commit 15 minutes a day to instant business trips: Use Twitter to respond to an update from a former co-worker. Find an old colleague on Facebook and drop a short note to connect. Build and maintain your long-distance relationships and they'll be ready when you need them. 2. Do your homework. Set up your computer with an RSS reader that works offline (thanks to Google Gears, that now includes Google Reader). Fill up your reader with content from the sites of companies you'll be meeting on the road. Set your reader to offline mode, and use your flight time to catch up on background research. 3. Meet and greet. Check for topical events in the city you're visiting, before you commit to travel dates. Eventful and upcoming.org list conferences and professional gatherings in many cities. 4. Fill your dance card. Use LinkedIn, a professional networking site, to expand your network when you're in a new city. Use advanced search to set the location you're traveling to, and browse search results for current or prospective contacts. You can also search your destination city for fellow alumni and introduce yourself; many people are delighted to hear from alums of their alma mater. 5. Connect with fellow travelers. Don't limit your networking to people who live near your destination. Use TripIt or Dopplr to track your travel details and share them with friends and colleagues. When you're traveling to the same city as a fellow contact, these services will alert you to your chance to connect. 6. Capture the card. Use shoeboxed to scan and digitize the business cards you collect on the road. Or do it yourself with Evernote: use your iPhone to snap a picture of each card you collect, and Evernote will use character recognition to make it full-text searchable (and accessible from the web or your desktop). 7. Restock your network. When you meet new colleagues on the road, ask them how they prefer to connect and stay in touch: connect on LinkedIn? Follow each other on Twitter? Become friends on Facebook? Follow up by adding them to your networks when you return, and be sure to drop them a note to thank them for meeting.
