This honors project aims to develop a personal artistic style through establishing aesthetic criteria informed by research into aesthetic theory. The digital medium will allow an intellectual and social process as well as an emotional one. Key aspects and themes that emerge throughout the artistic process will be gathered, documented, and analyzed. Elements of beauty like unity, simplicity, design, and use of light will be essential to creating meaningful artwork. Sketches and photographs were used to generate painting ideas, with a focus on improving digital craftsmanship skills. Landscapes, figures, and conceptual works were produced exploring themes like fairytale atmospheres and tonalism.

Ideas have been the driving force of humanity. From a simple circular wheel carved from rock back in the stone ages to the first airplanes and telephones, innovative ideas have sparked off revolutionary changes in society. Now in this competitive world, ideas have become more important to us than actions. Companies have begun asking designers to generate solutions that meet the needs and desires of the consumer.
As such, there was a need to streamline and increase the efficiency of producing and sharing ideas within teams. This gave birth to several idea generation techniques, which allowed everyone to play a part in the creative process, a role allotted strictly to designers and engineers for the last few years.
Idea generation techniques meant anyone could participate in creating new ideas. It allowed people to share and build up on existing solutions, to foresee future problems, and essentially, to think big in terms of design. It brought different specializations together to create a more diverse think-tank that can tackle problems from several perspectives.
This report is divided into three parts.
First, we shall look into several idea generation techniques, both popular ones and the uncommon ones, question their uses and value by providing examples of products developed using the specific techniques.
Second, we discuss whether idea generation methods and techniques are important in coming up with new ideas? Are they the driving factor in generating ideas?
Lastly, we conclude with our personal view on idea generation techniques, along with stating which methods, if any, would we prefer to use.
Towards the end we aim to achieve a better understand of the creative thinking process as a whole and how to effectively solve all issues, design or otherwise.

Artist's Talk: Shannon Smiley. Key Stage 3 students (Helen Nodding)HelenNodding
This is a talk that was given to Key Stage 3 Students at Arthur Terry School, in Birmingham, about the work of the Australian artist Shannon Smiley.
February, 2014
Art, and especially visual arts, is the topic that requires both background knowledge and imagination. Most teachers are afraid of it, the same as most students are bored with it. However, with the concept maps and cause-and-effect sentences it may become a source of fun in the English classroom. So, to make teaching of art more effective, I suggest a couple of ideas, which will also be the key points for the workshop:
1) Basic history of art - it gives us not just facts but useful vocabulary for describing works of art.
2) Elements of design and what they mean.
3) How to describe a picture or a photograph.
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

2. ABSTRACT
This honours year project aims to clarify one’s aesthetic vision. Aesthetic criteria will
be established through research into aesthetic theory and define one’s artistic style to
create meaningful art, which expresses personality and originality. The digital
medium will allow both an intellectual and social process as well as an emotional and
subjective process.
Additionally the practice-based project serves as documentation of an artistic process
to create extraordinary imagery in terms of craftsmanship as well as thought
provoking concepts. Important aspects and emerging themes will be gathered,
documented and analysed.
3. AESTHETIC CRITERIA
Even though the search for ones aesthetic voice is a timeless act which varies from
individual to individual, examination of art history and current technology and tools
help guide the artist’s search.
The chosen theme is “Seeing, Observing, Thinking” (Sander 2009). In other words
the combination of craftsmanship, observation and intellect will be essential to
produce meaningful content.
4. THE ELEMENTS OF BEAUTY
(Critical Framework)
1. Unity
▫ “Oneness”
▫ Organization of design, colour, line, values, textures and subject into a
combined and total expression
2. Simplicity/Clarity
▫ Reduction of the subject matter into the fundamentals of design, form
and pattern
3. Design
▫ Relationship of areas, form and colour
4. Proportion
▫ Harmonious relation of parts of the picture, opposite of distortion
5. Colour
▫ Relationship of colour to values
5. THE ELEMENTS OF BEAUTY
(Critical Framework)
6. Rhythm
▫ Without rhythm form is static and lifeless
▫ Repetition of similar colours or of lines or shapes of increasing or
diminishing size to create rhythm
7. Form
▫ Form or space (solid or void)
8. Texture
▫ Rendering of surface -> variety
9. Values
▫ Relationship of values to create the effects of light
▫ Values and colour are dependent on each other
10. Quality of Light
▫ There are many kinds of light: indoor, outdoor sunlight, diffused light,
reflected light
6. THE ELEMENTS OF BEAUTY
(Critical Framework)
11. Choice of Subject
▫ Individual taste
▫ Originality
12. Technique
▫ Means of expression
▫ The way all the other elements are brought together
13. A STORM IS BREWING
Analysis
The key elements on which I focused
particularly are the following:
• Colour & Value
▫ Complementary colours
• Rhythm, Balance & Unity
▫ Controlled vs. dynamic
• Lighting
▫ The sunlight helps emphasize the focus on the
waves crashing into the red cliffs
▫ The dark clouds, resembling the storm front, are
entering the painting from the right and further
allow the waves and main subject matter (red
cliffs) to stand out through value contrast/
lighting
14. A STORM IS BREWING
Analysis
• Inspired by real location, painted from memory
▫ That way the focus is on the core elements, the most striking features of the scene
-> Like most tonalist painters
• Personal thoughts
▫ It was a very cold day with a freezing wind, the red cliffs would warm up in the sun though (in windbreak)
and offer some warmth
–> Therefore I chose to paint the cliffs saturated and with warm colours. To emphasize the cold wind from
the sea I decided to go for big waves and an approaching storm.
• J. M. W. Turner
▫ The British romantic landscape painter surely has some influence on this digital painting, though no
specific painting was used as reference.
23. Fairytale Home
PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Improving digital craftsmanship skills.
An example of a digital painting approach from
traditional sketch to value sketch to coloured
painting.
Further focus was set on the composition and the
creation of the fairytale-like atmosphere.
25. I worked with many layers and their settings to
achieve different lighting effects in "Under the
Roots". The sun shining through the leaves of the
woods (especially in the day version) and the
shadows they cast were one of the key challenges. I
wanted to keep a welcoming atmosphere despite the
dense and massive trees. Therefore I avoided sharp
corners and used a curvy and elegant design for the
tress as well as the house. This contrasted the first
concept of the house.
Under the Roots
PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
27. ▫ Tonalism was fundamentally a landscape art:
subdued, profound, and spiritual
▫ Intimate, poetic and expressive style of
landscape art, relying on soft-edged broadly
painted tonalities to communicate emotion
▫ Neutral palette of predominantly cool
colours
▫ Mystery, dream, memory, and imagination
▫ Atmosphere is both palpable and evocative of
poetic and meditative states.
“The Tay Bridge” by Theodor Fontane
Extract:
The husband and wife, with an anxious eye,
Look out to the south and of misgivings sigh,
Keeping a lookout and praying for a light,
Which o’er the water advances bright,
Proclaiming, “In spite of night and driving rain,
I come, I, the Edinburgh train.”
PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Nocturne in Blue and Gold
The attempt of a more dreamlike painting to capture the
atmosphere of the setting. Inspired by the Tay Rail Bridge,
Dundee.
