As per the modern Industrial requirements, higher surface finish mechanical components and mating parts with close limits and tolerances, is one of the most important requirement. Abrasive machining processes are generally the last operations performed on manufactured products for higher surface finishing and for fine or small scale material removal. Higher surface finish and high rate of removal can be obtained if a large number of grains act together. This is accomplished by using bonded abrasives as in grinding wheel or by modern machining processes. In the present study, Taguchi method or Design of experiments has been used to optimize the effect of cylindrical grinding parameters such as wheel speed (rpm), work speed, feed (mm/min.), depth of cut and cutting fluid on the surface roughness of EN15AM steel. Ground surface roughness measurements were carried out by Talysurf surface roughness tester. EN15AM steel has several industrial applications in manufacturing of engine shafts, connecting rods, spindles, studs, bolt, screws etc. The results indicated that grinding wheel speed, work piece speed, table feed rate and depth of cut were the significant factors for the surface roughness and material removal rate. Surface roughness is minimum at 2000 r.p.m. of grinding wheel speed , work piece speed 80 rpm, feed rate 275 mm/min. and 0.06 mm depth of cut.

Working principle of honing machine
In the process of honing, the oil stone of the honing head is fed radial under the role of the
expanding and shrinking mechanism, and the workpiece is gradually processed to the
required size. Most honing machines are semi-automatic, usually with automatic measuring
device, and can also be incorporated into the automatic production line.In addition to the
honing machines for machining holes, there are also honing machines for machining other
surfaces, such as cylindrical honing machines, bearing raceway honing machines, plane
honing machines and curved surface honing machines. To implement honing. The honing
head feed mode is divided into quantitative feed and constant pressure feed. During the
quantitative feeding honing, the feeding mechanism expands the feeding at a constant speed,
so that the abrasive particles are forced to cut into the workpiece. When the blocking cutting
force produced by the oilstone decreases, the feed is larger than the actual grinding amount,
and the honing pressure increases, so that the abrasive particles fall off and break. The cutting
effect is enhanced. During constant pressure feeding, due to the uneven surface of the
workpiece, the honing head feeding amount needs to be adjusted in real time to ensure that
the workpiece bears constant grinding force.
Bond of honing stone
The bonding agent of diamond honing stone has three major categories of resin and bronze
plating metal. The resin binder is used for the fine binder and the high finish, and is generally
used for the bronze binder and the electroplating binder. The concentration of diamond
grinding stone is generally 100%.

quality. influences. The circumferential speed and reciprocating speed of the honing rod
directly honk the work piece finish and honing efficiency. The micro feed rate is mainly
determined by the nature of the work piece material and the characteristics of the honing
stone and the processing conditions. For steel work pieces, the micro-feed rate is slower when
the wear ability is poor, and the micro-feed speed can be faster for non-ferrous metals and
cast iron. The contact surface of the whetstone and the work piece is large, and the speed
should be slow, and vice versa. Must be selected according to the actual situation. If the over
travel of the honing stone is too large, it should cause the bell mouth; if the over travel is too
small, the work piece will have a waist drum shape. For a specific work piece, the over travel
should be determined by experiment. Generally, it is 1/3 of the oil stone. The cooling without
the feed honing is very important. Currently, kerosene is generally used. The cooling method
is single tube straight pouring method and ring flushing method.

How to dress the honing stick of the honing machine?
There is a problem: the honing strip is not well repaired, and the roundness and straightness
of the processed hole are more than 0.005. How can we repair the grinding rod better?
Honing method for honing machine:
1) After the new grinding bar is glued, it must be “circular” to the cylindrical grinding machine,
especially the diamond honing bar. If the tens of thousands of products are to be ground
without calibration, it may be used normally. The rule is to use the tooling to clamp the
grinding head, raise the grinding rod, and then smooth the grinding rod (on average).
Generally, the grinding head is equipped with this tool when it leaves the factory. When
grinding, pay attention to correct the outer circle of the grinding head first. It should be noted
that the ruled bar does not guarantee that all the averages are even, so it is necessary to pre-
grind some of the workpieces for final correction.
2) The quality of the workpiece fixture will also seriously affect the roundness and columnarity.
The fixture must be calibrated and coaxial with the spindle. The verticality should not exceed
0.02.
3) The cylinder is related to the correction stroke and should be adjusted.
When the honing machine replaces the honing head, if the honing size changes greatly. If
your machine is using a self-testing device (pneumatic film gauge), it is caused by a change

two nozzles of the grinding head. This effect is greatest because they determine the amount
of gap between the nozzle and the workpiece, and this size is directly reflected in the change
in the gauge value. 2) The size of the pores of the grinding head. Different pore diameters
determine the difference in flow and pressure changes, which also affect the indication of the
meter.
The general practice: when replacing the grinding head, put a workpiece of acceptable size,
start the gas measurement, rotate the grinding head, and read the value of the measuring
instrument to re-adjust the numerical feedback size of the measuring instrument.
