INTRODUCTION
Vincent Lingiari was born in 1908 in
Daguragu, Victoria River, Northern Territory.
He was a leader and an Elder of the Gurindji
people and also the head stockman of Wave
Hill cattle station. He was slim he had white
hair, strong features and had powerful
expression. Vincent could not read or write.

WAVE HILL WALK OUT
The Wave Hill Walk out started on the 23nd of
August 1966. There were more than 200 men,
women and children of the Gurindji people that
packed their belongings and walk off Wave Hill
cattle station in the Northern Territory.

ABOUT THE WAVE HILL
CATTLE STATION
The Wave Hill Station is 600 kilometres
south of Darwin. It used to belong to the
Gurindji people but then became leased by
Vestey Pastoral Company. The Gurindji
people became workers for this company
after they lost control over this land.

1855
The Explorer Augusts Gregory leads a group
across Gurindji land.
1883
Wave hill cattle station was built on Gurindji
land.
1914
Wave Hill cattle station was leased by Vestey
Pastoral Company.
1966
The Wave Hill walk off: Vincent lingiari leads his
people off Wave Hill Cattle station.
1975
Gough Whitlam (prime minister) leases 2500
square kilometres of land to the Gurindji people.
1981-85 The Gurindji win the right to own their land.

What Happened to Lingiari after he
Received the land back?
Lingiari never worked at the
cattle station ever again. For the
rest of his life he lived in
Daguragu. In 1978 he received
the order of Australia and died
on January 22nd, 1988. Vincent
Lingiari was a highly respected
man and leader
