Edith Dircksey Cowan was born on the 2nd of August 1861 in
Geraldon and died on the 9th of January 1932.In between that
she was the first women in Western in Australia to have a seat in
parliament. She married at the age of eighteen to a man named
James Cowan they had five kids four daughters and one son.

Edith Dircksey Cowan was born on the 2nd of August 1861 in
Geraldon and died on the 9th of January 1932.In between that
she was the first women in Western in Australia to have a seat in
parliament. She married at the age of eighteen to a man named
James Cowan they had five kids four daughters and one son.

rights for women and children in the 1900‘s.Women
won the right to vote in 1899 but were not allowed to
stand for parliament until 1926.Edith Cowan
campaigned for both cases. Edith Cowan was the first

the $50 bill.
Some of the memories of her today include a clock tower
entrance in Kings Park in Perth and her portrait is printed on
the $50 bill. Also Edith Cowan University is named after her in
Western Australia. There are two campuses, one in Joondalup
and one in Mount Lawley

died, James Cowan was quoted as saying, “to have lived with her
those years was a honour.” Edith maintained her committee and
social work until her final illness.

suffering with illness and jealousy.
1879 Edith married James Cowan on the 12th of November 1879.
1880-1890 In this period of time, James and Edith had 4 daughters and a son.
1891 Edith worked in the Ministry of Children’s League.
1894 Cowan was the first secretary for Karrakatta club.
1909 Edith was one of the founding members of the Women Service Guide.
