Holocaust: Atrocity Photo Montage by Michael Rickabaugh
Ghettoes During the Nazi regime, Jewish people eventually became completely segregated and isolated from other Germans. They completely lost all rights and citizenship, as well as all esteem and respect. These Jewish people– no matter what stage in life– were treated as inferior. These children from a 1943 Polish ghetto were victims of these policies…
Annihilation Eventually the state decided that the ghettoes were too kind to the Jewish people and had them leave for concentration camps. Many Jewish people hid, wishing to avoid the horrors of those camps, and Nazi officials were aware. So the state sanctioned the demolition of the ghettoes whether or not all had been vacated. This is what is left of a residential building (and possibly its residents) in Kovno Ghetto…
Death Toll of “Euthanasia” This is a mass grave near Hadamar, where countless people deemed to have physical or mental disabilities were collected and killed with poison gas. Many Jews especially were deemed to have disabilities (whether coincidence or not). This picture was selected simply because you cannot see the end…
Einsatzgruppen In English, literally mobile killing squad, these groups were brought about to kill political enemies found behind enemy lines. This picture depicts the remains of a Jewish family, with one young boy left standing before his family. This picture was chosen because it is impossible to even begin to sympathize with that youth and what he was thinking prior to being shot, too…
Death March from Dachau As the war came to a close, myriads of survivors from the concentration camps were evacuated and forced to march impossible distances. Nazi escorts had strict orders to execute all who could not keep going for any reason. Needless to say, a terrible amount of Jewish people died in marches like these… This picture specifically depicts the ragged prisoners marching with armed guards and is a faithful representation of what the “death marches” were.
