2. When Did The Company Start ?
HMV begin in the 1890s at the dawn of the disc
gramophone.
But the first store wain 1921, the composer Sir
Edward Elgar opens the first HMV store in
London at 363 Oxford Street. The store stocks
gramophones, radios and popular music hall
recordings. The decade sees radio become
popular with the British public and demand for
recorded music increased
n 1966 HMV began expanding its retail
operations in London. Throughout the 1970s, the
company continued to expand, doubling in
size, and in six years became the country's
leading specialist music retailers. But it then
faced competition from the new Virgin
Megastores.
3. What dose HMV stand for ?
HMV stands for His Master's Voice, the title of a painting by Francis
Barraud of the dog Nipper listening to a cylinder phonograph. HMV no
longer use the dog and grammarphone in there logo because they feel it is
not what the public want

Because the painting called “ His masters voice” contained
the dog and the gramophone.

Yes the logo has changed over time. The logo was first used in there
