Task 6: Research into Music
 Video Record Labels

A record label is a brand and a trademark associated with the marketing of music
recordings and music video. Most commonly, a record label is the company that
manages such brands and trademarks, coordinates the production, manufacture,
distribution, marketing and promotion, and enforcement of copyright protection of
sound recordings and music videos; conducts talent scouting and development of
new artists and maintains contracts with recording artists and their managers. The
term "record label" derives from the circular label in the center of a vinyl record
which prominently displays the manufacturer's name, along with other
information.
The fourth largest group within the music industry, but
also has a major publishing arm.
Both international and European label groups
Specialise in a variety of music genres
Formed in 1931 in London under the name of The
Electrical and Musical Industries . In 1948 EMI introduced
the first vinyl
The 1960s saw more success for the label In 1962, despite
being rejected by every other label, EMI sign Liverpool
band The Beatles to their subsidiary label Parlophone .
They see huge success, earning millions for EMI. It
encouraged a massive boom for UK acts, with EMI
dominating the UK charts throughout the 1960s. The
Beatles have sold approximately 600 million albums.
Rough Trade Records is an independent record label
based in London. It was formed in 1978 by Geoff Travis
who had opened a record store off Ladbroke Grove.
Having successfully promoted and sold records by
punk, very early Indie Pop and early post punk bands
such as Buzzcocks, The Smiths and Desperate Bicycles,
Travis began to manage acts and distribute bands such
as Scritti Politti and began the label, which was
informed by left-wing politics and structured as a co-
operative. Soon after, Rough Trade also set up a
distribution arm that serviced independent retail
outlets across Britain, a network that became known
as the Cartel.
Founded in 1924; the second largest global music
based record company.
Distribution of media to a number of different
countries including Japan
Former group ownership such as 'Columbia Records' as
well as current independent
labels.
Sony Music Entertainment is a global recorded music
company with a roster that includes a broad array of
both local artists and international superstars. The
company boasts a vast catalogue that comprises some
of the most important recordings in history. It is home
to premier record labels representing music from every
genre. Sony Music Entertainment is a wholly owned
subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America.
