This document discusses the history and introduction of speech language pathology in Pakistan and Asia. It describes how speech language pathology originated in the US in the 1920s with the establishment of an organizing body. In Pakistan, speech language pathology began in 1994 with the establishment of a postgraduate diploma program. The first speech and hearing center was opened in Karachi in 1983. Several universities now offer undergraduate and graduate programs in speech language pathology, including the University of Karachi, Ziauddin University, and the University of Lahore.

2. HISTORY OF SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY :
Speech-language pathology is a field of expertise practiced by a
clinician known as a speech-language pathologist (SLP), also called
speech and language therapist or speech therapist. SLP is considered a
"related health profession" along with occupational therapy, physical
therapy, and others. SLPs specialize in the evaluation, diagnosis, and
treatment of communication disorders, cognitive-communication
disorders, voice disorders, and swallowing disorders, and play an
important role in the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum
disorder.
HISTORY OF SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY IN ASIA:
MOST HISTORIES WRITTEN OF SPEECH PATHOLOGY ORIGINS IN THE US
FOCUS ON ORGANIZATIONAL MATTERS. THEY PLACE THE ORIGINS OF
THE PROFESSION IN AROUND 1925, WHEN THOSE WORKING IN THE FIELD
OF SPEECH DISORDERS AND SPEECH CORRECTION ESTABLISHED THEIR
OWN ORGANIZATION. THIS HISTORY OF 20TH CENTURY PRACTICES IS
BROADER THAN THAT. IT FOCUSES NOT ONLY ON THE ORGANIZATIONAL
ORIGINS BUT ALSO ON THE SCIENCE AND IDEAS UNDERLYING THE
PRACTICES.
THIS SECOND CENTURY OF HISTORY FOLLOWS ON FROM THE PRECEDING
SECTION, AROUND 1900 AND PROCEEDING TO 2000. IT IS DIVIDED,
CHRONOLOGICALLY INTO FOUR PERIODS, WITH EACH BEING
CHARACTERIZED BY WHAT WAS A MAJOR FOCUS DURING THOSE YEARS.
THE FIRST PART IS CALLED OUR FORMATIVE YEARS BECAUSE IT DEALS
WITH THE EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY WHEN THE SCIENTIFIC,
ACADEMIC, AND PRACTICE SEEDS OF THE PROFESSION WERE PLANTED.
THIS PERIOD BEGINS JUST BEFORE 1900, WITH THE CLASSIC WRITING OF
SAMUEL POTTER, AND PROCEEDS TO THE END OF WORLD WAR II.

3. NEXT IS THE PROCESSING PERIOD FROM 1945 TO 1965, DURING WHICH
TIME MANY ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY APPROACHES WERE DEVELOPED
TO IMPROVE INTERNAL PSYCHOLOGICAL PROCESSING UNDERLYING
COMMUNICATION DISORDERS.
A THIRD PERIOD, BEGINNING AROUND 1965 AND LASTING UNTIL 1975,
WAS THE THE LINGUISTIC ERA, DURING WHICH TIME WE CAME TO
TREAT LANGUAGE DISORDERS AS SEPARABLE FROM SPEECH DISORDERS
AND AS BEING LINGUISTIC IN NATURE.
THIS RENDITION OF THE 20TH CENTURY ENDS WITH THE PRAGMATICS
REVOLUTION LASTING FROM 1975 TO 2000, WHEN WE RECONSIDERED
AND REFRAMED PRACTICES TO INCLUDE COMMUNICATIVE, LINGUISTIC,
CULTURAL, AND EVERYDAY-LIFE CONTEXTS.
INTRODUCTION OF SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY IN
PAKISTAN:
The speech language pathology basically started in 1994 in NATIONAL
INSTUITE OF HEALTH, Islamabad by awarding a degree in post
graduate diploma. General Zia –ul- haq’s daughter Zain Zia basically
suffered from down syndrome so he started building instuites to cater
these type of children. Special education centers were opened in
Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore. The Speech and Hearing Centre,
Karachi, was the first of its kind established in Pakistan in 1983 by Mr.
Saleem and Mrs. Zohra Saleem advocating AVT.The University of
Karachi has also been awarding master's degree in audiology and speech
pathology since 2005.Ziauddin University, of course, is the first one in
the private sector to offer undergraduate programme in the field of SLP.
In 2008 government announced 17 scale jobs and 90 seats were allotted
to SLPS. The University of Lahore launched its BS programme
simultaneously with KE, FATIMA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL in 2014.
The UOL caters has around 10 seats followed by FMH 10, Children
hospital 10, and KE 5 seats for speech language pathology. Ziauddin

build the 1st
college of speech and language hearing sciences.
