Pulicat is a small fishing town located 55km north of Chennai that has a long history. It was an important seaport 2000 years ago when the Chola, Chera, and Pandya empires traded with Southeast Asia. Pulicat later became a major Dutch settlement on the Coromandel coast in the 16th-17th centuries. The Dutch established their headquarters and issued coins in Pulicat. While the Portuguese and British also had influence, Pulicat declined after the 18th century. Today it is known for its lake, bird sanctuary, beaches and potential as a UNESCO heritage site due to its rich multicultural history involving trade.
Vernacular architecture is architecture characterised by the use of local materials and knowledge, usually without the supervision of professional architects. Vernacular architecture represents the majority of buildings and settlements created in pre-industrial societies and includes a very wide range of buildings, building traditions, and methods of construction.[1] Vernacular buildings are typically simple and practical, whether residential houses or built for other purposes.[2]
Although it encompassed 95% of the world's built environment in 1969,[3] vernacular architecture tends to be overlooked in traditional histories of design. It is not one specific style, so it cannot be distilled into a series of easy-to-digest patterns, materials, or elements.[4] Because of the usage of traditional building methods and local builders, vernacular buildings are considered part of a regional culture.
Vernacular architecture can be contrasted against elite or polite architecture which is characterized by stylistic elements of design intentionally incorporated for aesthetic purposes which go beyond a building's functional requirements. This article also covers the term traditional architecture, which exists somewhere between the two extremes yet still is based upon authentic themes

Presented 9/12/2009 at jQuery Conf 2009.
Like any good Javascript framework would, jQuery includes Ajax functionality into its core. In particular, though, jQuery has some interesting ways it approaches event handling with Ajax responses. We’re going to dive into this Ajax event mechanism, and see what fun we can have with extending it.
This talk will first review the various Ajax events and some common ways they are used. Then, we’ll investigate jQuery source code and see how each is accomplished. Armed with this knowledge, we’ll talk about some scenarios where you might want to extend these events with extra functionality, or even add your own custom Ajax events.
To move from the theoretical into the concrete, we will discuss two jQuery Ajax plugins I released, mpAjax and flXHRproxy, and look at how each needed in its own way to hook into the Ajax event mechanism and extend it.
