a) In what ways did the formation of the
Organization of African Unity (OAU) affect the
lives of the African people? Explain your answer.

Many African people were affected positively, because
the OAU provided aids and support to the liberation
movements; it formed the Development Bank where
African people would borrow money to develop their
countries and it helped African countries through
African liberation committee to train soldiers during
the war.
b) Why was the OAU formed? (3)
To settle disputes between members
states. To support and defend the
independence of member states. To
eliminate colonialism from Africa.
c) How successful was the structure of the
OAU in Africa? Explain your answer.

It was successful because, each structure had
responsibilities and functions that it had
carried out, and it settled disputes among
fighting countries on the continent.
d) Name and explain two reasons why
Britain decided to grant independence to
its colonies. (4)
Socialist party won the election in Britain;
after socialists won election, it decided to
grant independence to its colonies.
The country was exhausted after the WWII;
the country was not ready to continue as a
major world power.
e) Lists two failures of the OAU? (2)
It failed to achieve Unity in Africa.
It did not stop the human rights abuse in Africa.
e). List any two success/achievements of the OAU.

It set up the African Development Bank.
It supported groups that fought against colonialism in
Southern Africa.
e). List any two structures of the OAU. (2)
The General Assembly; the Council of Ministers; the
Committee for mediation, Conciliation and arbitration.
f) Write a paragraph about the contribution of
Kwame Nkrumah towards African unity and
independence. (5)
He was the first president of Ghana; he believed in
the total liberation of Africa. 19. He organized the
Pan-African conference of 8 independent Africa
countries in Accra, Ghana; he formed AAPO in 1958,
which was mandated with task to achieve
independence for Africa and setting up a common
wealth of free African states. He believed in the
United States of Africa.
g) What did the African leaders think about
Kwame Nkrumah’s dream of the United States of
Africa? Explain your answer. (5)
African leaders thought differently. Many African
leaders were happy because their countries had finally
become independent; they had business relations with
the European nations; small and poor nation could
benefit from the economic york of the United State of
Africa; Some leaders were not happy because still their
countries were not yet independent and some European
countries were still relaxed from granting African
freedom and independence; Africa was still big for a
single government; it had unequal distribution of
resources and poor road network.
h) Here are three reasons that led to the failure of the OAU.
 The OAU had no army to enforce its decision and resolutions.
 OAU failed as a unifying force to live to the hopes of its founders.
 OAU has been incapable of preventing or ending any of the battle in Africa.
Which of the reasons above contributed to the failure of the OAU?
Choose and write your three reasons and explain why the other two
are less important as your choice. (6)
The OAU had no army to enforce its decision and resolution contributed to
the failure of the OAU; because member countries were not willing to send
their soldiers as peace-keeping force in Africa; many countries were still
fighting for freedom against their masters, many African nations were still
colonies therefore they were difficulty to be fought for.
OAU failed as a unifying force; since Africa did not have its armed force it
was difficulty to remain as a unifying force for Africa.
OAU has been incapable to end many battle in African; it could not able to
intervene in ending wars in Africa since it did not have its army force.

(4) Many African people were affected positively, because the OAU provided aids and support to the liberation movements; it formed the Development Bank where African people would borrow money to develop their countries and it helped African countries through African liberation committee to train soldiers during the war.
  • 3. b) Why was the OAU formed? (3) To settle disputes between members states. To support and defend the independence of member states. To eliminate colonialism from Africa.
  • 4. c) How successful was the structure of the OAU in Africa? Explain your answer. (3) It was successful because, each structure had responsibilities and functions that it had carried out, and it settled disputes among fighting countries on the continent.

(4) Socialist party won the election in Britain; after socialists won election, it decided to grant independence to its colonies. The country was exhausted after the WWII; the country was not ready to continue as a major world power.

He organized the Pan-African conference of 8 independent Africa countries in Accra, Ghana; he formed AAPO in 1958, which was mandated with task to achieve independence for Africa and setting up a common wealth of free African states. He believed in the United States of Africa.

Many African leaders were happy because their countries had finally become independent; they had business relations with the European nations; small and poor nation could benefit from the economic york of the United State of Africa; Some leaders were not happy because still their countries were not yet independent and some European countries were still relaxed from granting African freedom and independence; Africa was still big for a single government; it had unequal distribution of resources and poor road network.
  • 9. h) Here are three reasons that led to the failure of the OAU.  The OAU had no army to enforce its decision and resolutions.  OAU failed as a unifying force to live to the hopes of its founders.  OAU has been incapable of preventing or ending any of the battle in Africa. Which of the reasons above contributed to the failure of the OAU? Choose and write your three reasons and explain why the other two are less important as your choice. (6) The OAU had no army to enforce its decision and resolution contributed to the failure of the OAU; because member countries were not willing to send their soldiers as peace-keeping force in Africa; many countries were still fighting for freedom against their masters, many African nations were still colonies therefore they were difficulty to be fought for. OAU failed as a unifying force; since Africa did not have its armed force it was difficulty to remain as a unifying force for Africa. OAU has been incapable to end many battle in African; it could not able to intervene in ending wars in Africa since it did not have its army force.
