The Sumerians in ancient Mesopotamia created the first formal education system around 3000 BCE. They established schools to teach upper class boys how to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic using the cuneiform writing system. Students memorized texts, copied models, and received individual instruction from a head teacher and assistants. They studied subjects like mathematics, law, and agriculture. Only a small percentage of the population became literate, but those who mastered writing became scribes, a prestigious and powerful profession.
