The 1967 Six Day War resulted in Israel gaining control of the Sinai Peninsula, West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Golan Heights. This established Israel's presence in the region and solidified its relationship with the US. It also increased the number of Palestinian refugees under Israeli control. The First Intifada from 1987-1993 involved protests and uprising from Palestinians against the Israeli occupation. Over 1,400 Palestinians and 150 Israelis were killed. The Second Intifada began in 2000 and was sparked by Ariel Sharon's controversial visit to the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif holy site. It involved further violence and reduced support for the Oslo peace process.
