American culture during the mid-to-late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and how these

In this course, we will explore American literature from the Civil War to the present. The
literature selected is diverse and represents the vast tracts of America’s culture. Timely issues
and traditions are studied in their historical, social, political, and economic context. With the
passage of time, these issues and dilemmas multiplied, as did the philosophic, economic, and
cultural assumptions that helped frame our country. Frank Norris, an American Naturalist author
stated, “The function of a novelist . . . is to comment upon life as he sees it.”

It is believed that Queen Hatshepsut dressed as a man to gain support of the Egyptians. After her death, her successor removed as many remnants of her rule as possible. Although a pharaoh, her mummified remains and tomb have never been conclusively found.
Tutankhamen died young, at around 18 years of age. However, his cause of death has not been confirmed. Did he die of an injury, of illness, or was he murdered?
Considered the “Mummy’s Curse,” a series of unexplainable, unfortunate, or tragic events that happened to the people who were present at the opening of Tutankhamen’s tomb.
The monumental size and complexity of the Tomb of Shihuangdi is astounding. It is believed that the workers were forced to remain inside the tomb when it was walled shut so they would not reveal the secrets of its construction. What was the emperor’s purpose for such an elaborate burial place?

society today. They had a person that was above all else,

In this course we will examine ways in which British art and literature of the "high imperial" period (1870-1914) expressed and shaped the national discourse on imperialism in England. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
