In ancient Mesopotamia, the death penalty was seen as retribution for certain crimes,
and to this day, is now a common practice in the United States. Before, when the
United States were still colonies, the death penalty had been carried out by hanging
and other various methods but today in the modern age, the Unites States method of
execution in most states is lethal injection (Issitt). Unlike previous methods, such as
electrocution and the firing squad, the lethal injection is virtually painlessly due to
certain drugs being injected into the patient that put the patient to sleep during the
process. Due to its medical nature, medical personnel, such as anesthesiologists are
needed to administer the drugs, but is it ethical for them to participate in the

In Battle Royal by Ralph Ellison, the narrator who remains nameless, is looking
back on his teenage years while telling a story from his past. In the story, the
narrator is invited to a party to deliver a speech, however when he arrives he is
forced to partake in the Battle Royal. Battle Royal is a chapter from Ellison s book
Invisible Man, which is about an African Americanteenager who grows up in a
society where he finds himself invisible, as did Ellison himself. In Ralph Ellison s
Battle Royal, the American flag tattoo, the blindfold, and the grandfather s deathbed
symbolize the overall message that the African Americans were dominated by the
whites.
The narrator of the story is invited to a party, where he is supposed to present his
speech in front of all the people who attend. At the party, the white men invite a
stripper to intimidate and scare the African American teenagers. The teenagers are
forced to stare at the white, blonde, naked woman that stands in front of them, with
no way out and not knowing how to react. While recalling the story from his past,
the narrator notices that the stripper has a tattoo of the American flag. The
American flag is particularly symbolic to this story, since it is placed on a white
woman. While being forced to stare at the naked woman at the party, the narrator
says, I wanted at one and the same time to run from the room, to sink through the
floor, or go to her and cover her from my eyes and the eyes of the others with my
body (Ellison). Even if they do have feelings for her, they are forbidden to act upon
them, since it was illegal to have mixed race relationships during the 20th century.
According to SAGE Publications, the emergence of racial genomics, I argue, is a
response to these specific threats to the racial hierarchy and to white dominance
(Fitzgerald). The white men bring the stripper to the party, mainly to torture the
teenagers and make them feel uncomfortable. The white men dominate over the

This aspect undermines realist convention because a lot of the death involves fate
and a hint of the supernatural. Bennett and Royle s definition of realism is that it
describes the world as it really is. The deaths involved in Howards End are entirely
unlike they would happen in the real world. To begin with, Ruth Wilcox seems to
slip into death with an entirely supernatural ease. Towards the end of the novel,
Leonard Bast s death is, as far as can be said, an average death due to a heart attack
but the fact that he was struck with the blunt edge of a sword which caused his death
is entirely uncanny and slightly bizarre for the time period in which the novel is set.
Many characters in Howards End experience the death drive laid out in Bennett
and Royle s uncanny chapter. This is the idea that everyone, at some level [...] is

death. Henry Wilcox is a prime example of the death drive. Towards the finish of
the novel, Henry, Helen and Margaret move in to Howard s End and Henry s

shoulders. Reality comes to Henry at a late stage in his life and the effect it has on

with them may affect their ability to interact with certain populations. These life
experiences form the basis of each individual s perceptions of certain situations,
populations, or individuals. These perceptions may be influenced by their political
beliefs, religious values, social status, or previous experiences with certain
populations (Lee, Jones, Lewis, 1990).
The National Coalition for the Homeless, (n.d.) found there are over three million
people homeless in America at any given time. Research as shown that homeless
individuals often are treated differently just because of other people s perceptions
toward them (Boydell, Goering, Morrell Bellai, 2000; Harter, Berquist, Titsworth,
Novak, Brokaw, 2005). Persons wanting to work with homeless individuals should be

Policy and Background:
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were developed nationally in 2009 with
the intent of better preparing students for college, and their eventual careers. Faced
with the option of whether to adopt or reject CCSS, the state of Arizona chose the
former. The Arizona College and Career Ready Standards (AZCCRS) were officially
adopted in 2010, with required implementation starting in the 2013 school year. The
approved common core subjects are English and math, and place a heavy focus on
the development of real world, critical thinking skills. Common Core standards
were adopted by the state of Arizona because of the perceived need to enhance
students abilities to transition from K 12 grade levels to college and the career
world. The AZCCRS clearly dictate what Arizona children should know at each
grade level (Expect More Arizona, 2014) Aside from updating everyday classroom
standards, there has also been a push to replace the outdated Arizona s Instrument to
Measure Standards (AIMS) test. While there was debate over which standardize test
to administer, the state of Arizona has decided that Arizona s Measure of Educational
Readiness to Inform Teaching (AZMERIT) will be the best tool to measure the
success of the new educational standards. As with most new policies, there are strong
opinions about the new standards.

Top Girls Character Analysis
The play, Top Girls, by Caryl Churchill chronicles the lives of several women and
their struggle to achieve success and happiness, as well as exploring their personal
identities. Moreover, a central theme in the play was that of how one s choices can
affect a person s satisfaction with their life. This theme is especially prevalent in
the two contrasting characters of Marlene and Joyce. In Marlene s life, she is the
top girl. She has a successful career, and is even given a promotion. On the surface,
she is extremely satisfied with her life, however, in order to achieve this
satisfaction, she gave up a lot in her life. It has been years since she saw her
mother and sister, she s not in any stable relationship, and it s revealed that she
gave up her child to her sister s care when she was younger. This particular instance
of Marlene giving up her child is what McAdams would call a nuclear episode a
specific and consequential scene in a life story such as high point, low point, or
turning point. In talking to Joyce about this pivotal moment in her life, Joyce
seemed resolved in her decision, but it was evident in her expression and
physicality that she was still pained by her choice. So, while Joyce may be
satisfied with her work life, her social and family life has been pushed to the
wayside to make room for her big dreams. Yet, despite the difficult choices that
Marlene had to make in order to further her career and life, she still appears generally
satisfied with her

Kennel Research Paper
I volunteered at Tender Mercies pet organization on April 1,3, and 20. to complete
my service learning of 6 hours. There is always so much to learn at the kennel
because there is always new dogs looking for homes. Dogs are unique just like
humans and they have different needs and behaviors so it makes it special to care for
them. This timeI had a different experience because I got to learn more about
borders, which are dogs that already have owners and are only staying temporarily.
The time I volunteered, I got to work closer with them and learn how you care for

When we learn, we learn things depending on our perspective on life, but if you
step back you can see that there are many ways to look at things. If I learned
anything, it s that we all see things different, so we should stop and think about that
before we complain about someone or something. I ve always struggled with that
concept and now it s getting easier to see. If someone says something you don t
agree with, then you have to try to see it from their point of view. For example,
when you are working with people, you have to take their opinions into
consideration or you can t function properly. It is much easier to talk things out
with someone you work with rather than a stranger, but when working at the
kennel, you have to talk to all kinds of people. I ve had to talk to people who
wanted to adopt, people bringing their dogs to stay and other volunteers. When you
do this, you have to listen to their needs and attend to them properly. For example,
when people bring their dogs, you have to abide by their instructions even if they
are different than what you usually do. Also, when people come to adopt, you have
to make sure to tell the truth, but also try to find them a dog they will like according
