Colonialism and Morality in The Moonstone and The Man Who...
Colonialism and Morality in The Moonstone and The Man Who Would Be King
Let us presuppose to begin with that the cursed jewel is an impossibility and the powers of the
Moonstone or any other gem for that matter only exist on an atomic level ( i.e. the energies which
bind such objects together and make them what they are). Additionally it should be considered that
no such object is the means by which a being exerts powers and no such object consciously exerts
powers itself. Notions of the cursed or powerful jewel can be seen as a bi product of what Said
terms Orientalism. Said describes The Orient as almost a European invention, a place of exotic
beings and remarkable experiences. (Ashcroft et al ed. p.87) This hypothesis ... Show more content

The Moonstone is a narrative device which illuminates the text in multiple ways.
Such a device remains popular in western adventure literature and film, whether in the form of
an Egyptian scarab or a monkey s claw. The mystical object with powerful properties is involved
in adventure tales from Conan Doyle through Indiana Jones, even one of the most famous of
modern legends the fates of Carter and Caernarfon excavators of Tutankahmun s tomb involves a
curse and shameful Orientalism. Perhaps the best indicator of such notions becoming part of
western folklore is when they become utilised as simple metaphor. This is apparent in John
Huston s 1975 film version of Rudyard Kipling s The Man Who Would Be King. The desire of
the central protagonists; Peachy Carnahan and Daniel Dravitt to become Kings of an isolated
region of the Indian sub continent is built upon by the abundance of treasures that becomes
available to them, an aspect absent from Kipling s original tale. Huston s version increases the
greed of the two adventurers which in turn provides a more satisfying justification of their fates
than we receive in the original short story.
Whilst admiring giant rubies Huston s Peachy remarks All we need do is fill our pockets and we d
be millionaires. Dravitt then retorts that if they stayed they would be Kings. Carnahan subsequently

The Egyptian Revolution And The Arab World
Being tasked with creating a project that addressed any topic related to the Arab world can be a
daunting assignment. Nevertheless, my group was able to create a unique project that highlighted a
monumental string of events that shaped the Arab world as we see it today. The topic decided
upon was the Arab Spring in Egypt, specifically looking at how Facebook existed in its timeframe
as a mechanism for collaboration and action toward a revolution and regime change. Together, we
set to understand the Egyptian revolution beginning in 2010 in tangible terms that could be
communicated to the average student, which we thought, was best done through a simplified
simulation of how Facebook was used as a major tool and function. In order to... Show more content

In reality, it was a mechanism that brought people of like minded thoughts together (Emon, et. al.).
My research attempted to emphasize the actual role of social media and provide insight to
Facebook as a tool instead of a stakeholder.
The match that was able to ignite and unite the people of Egypt to act on their dislike of the
regime and its corruption came with two men: Khaled Said and Wael Ghonim. On June 6, 2010,
in Alexandria, two police officers approached Khaled Said and arrested him on the premise that
the possessed a video material that implicates members of the police in a drug deal (Wedeman).
Multiple witnesses from that day testified that the situation escalated and resulted in Saeed being
dragged across the street by the police officers and beaten to death while doctors tried to
intervene and revive him. Ali Kassem, Said uncle stated in conjunction with his nephew s death,
Every family in Egypt has seen something like this happen to a member. I will feel like I have
attained justice only if the regime falls and a new government is formed, (Londono, 2). The official
autopsy and police report after the event stated that Saeed suffocated in an attempt to swallow
drugs, and the original arrest was for theft and weapons possession (Wedeman).
This photograph of Said s face from the morgue was eventually viewed by Wael Ghonim who
focused his anger into a Facebook page titled, We Are All

U.s. Gangs And The Gangs
Drug routes are associated and may have originated with U.S. gangs in an effort for drug cartels
to amp up and focus on their production, leaving the logistics to the gangs. The drug cartels have
chosen to align with U.S. gangs based on similar philosophies of honor, allegiance, and loyalty
combined with similar business practices and levels of hierarchy. The largest U.S. gangs are
structured similarly to giant corporations that succeed with levels of management teams with the
ultimate goal of profit, U.S. gangs are no different as they often legitimize themselves as profitable
business. Asian gangs are common in California and on the east coast but locating scholarly articles
about their operations is a daunting task that required a personal interview with a former gang
member. The diverse ethnic and cultural population movement into the U.S. has made it a melting
pot for people searching for a better life. Many of these individuals find a life of peace, serenity,
growth, and stable work while others swing the opposite direction leading a life of rebellion, crime,
and drug use or trafficking. S.H. Decker et al. (2009) suggest this theory is accurate claiming that
immigration, ethnicity, and culture matter insofar as fear, mistrust, threat, and conflict are present
in the areas where ethnic groups are arriving...and are breeding grounds for gang formation (p.

The Effects Of Harsh Coaching Of Young Athletes Essay
Harsh coaching of young athletes can often steer kids away from sports all together, but if the
coaches get it right, the kids learn important skills for their futures. At a young age, children need
discipline in order to put them in the right direction for their futures. This discipline is found in
numerous forms, and one of the most common forms is through sports. David Brooks said, The
best coaches still live by a code, and they make no apology for demanding that kids live up to it.
(Brooks) Though strict coachingcan turn some young children and their parents away from sports,
it can give kids a good role model, teach them discipline, and help them learn to get along with
other people. Parents often have concerns for how coaches treat their young athletes, but most
coaches are the best character role models that a child will have. As David Brooks, author of the
article Organized Sports Can Benefit Children , says Coaches have become the leading moral
instructors in America today. (Brooks). Groups like The Positive Coaching Alliance exist solely
to keep coaches doing their job of creating mature and respectful athletes (Positive). Children need
these positive role models in their lives. Even if a child has great role models as parents, it is even
better to have one outside of the family. A coachcan serve as someone that kids should admire, love,
and respect even though they are outside of their family; this will prepare children for their future

Physical Properties Of Matter, Density, Mass, And Volume
One of the physical properties of matter is density. Density is defined as a measure of how much
mass is contained in a given unit volume. A physical property can be measured without changing
the chemical identity of the substance. Since pure substances have unique density values,
measuring the density of a substance can help identify that substance. Densityis determined by
dividing the mass of a substance by its volume. Density, volume, and mass have a clear relationship
that can clearly be shown by the mathematical formula:
Density= Mass/Volume
In our experiment we used the determined mass and volume of the sample to calculate the density
of an irregular solid and of an unknown liquid. We then compared our density of our liquid with
densities of known substances to determine the identity of the unknown substance. The purpose of
the experiment was to determine the density of a solid and an unknown liquid. Furthermore, we
also evaluated the relationships of density, mass, and volume.
Keywords: Density, Mass, Volume
Introduction
Which is heavier, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead? I m sure we have all heard this pretty
naive riddle. However, some people would think that the answer would be the pound of lead.
However, after this experiment we should all know the answer.
All matter has volume and mass. Density expresses the relationship of these two primary properties
of matter. Mass is the measure of how much matter an object contains. The more matter an object

Working As A Tax Intern At The Firm s Core Tax Services...
During the course of my internship at BDO, I will be working as a tax intern in the firm s core tax
services practice. While BDO prepares returns for a wide variety of clients in numerous industries,
the Rosemont office, where I am interning, has a vast restaurant practice and an abundance of

numerous industry specializations, namely restaurants and rental properties, makes for a unique
internship opportunity.

To find this information, it is often necessary to access the partnerships general ledger and evaluate
the contributions that were made during the year. The general ledger is also helpful in discerning
the nature of certain vague account titles such as building improvements. When determining how
these assets should be depreciated for tax purposes, the general ledger provides adequate detail to
determine the appropriate MACRS recovery period.
After the client provided trial balance has been reformatted and its accounts have been made more
specific, I often have to perform an accrual to cash conversion. This is because the clients books
are kept on an accrual basis but their returns are prepared under the cash basis method of
accounting. Therefore, because the cash method only reflects transactions for which cash was paid
or received in the current period, accounts such as accrued expenses, accounts payable, and prepaid
rent cannot be included on the return. Therefore is necessary to make adjustments to the trial
balance before it is imported into the tax software. For example, to remove accounts receivable
from the trial balance before I import it, I would credit accounts receivable and debit revenue. Once
all accrual accounts have been reversed out, I use the newly created tax trial balance to complete the
actual return.
Once the return is completed and deemed correct, I then update the basis schedules for each
member of the partnership to account for their outside

Causes Of The Jim Crow Laws
My position is that the Jim Crows Laws were entirely outrageous and gave no real hope to the
people who truly needed it. The Jim Crow laws are the laws that made the separation of the
nonwhites (Expert Space) from the whites legal. Some of the whites used to think that they were
naturally smarter and more civilized than blacks (Expert Space). The creation of the Jim Crow laws
took place in about 1880, after World War II ended; it ended due to the Civil Rights Act in the
1950 s. These laws were started in the US Supreme Court, though there were fifty states that didn t
adopt the laws: Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts,
Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and Wisconsin. This
segregation took place mostly in the south, like the slavery that was going on in the US up until
1865. This leads to the first cause of the Jim Crow laws. Racism: it has been going on since the
start of man. White people thought and some still think that they were and are superior to the
African Americanpeople. It got really bad when the white people enslaved the people of color in
1619 1865. Most of the former slave owners were so furious over the ending of the Jim Crow laws,
that they continued to treat the black peopleterribly. They were ecstatic when the Jim Crow laws
were created about fifteen years later so they could appear superior to the black people once again.
There were some people who fought for the rights of the

Kanban Pros And Cons
Kanban (literally signboard or billboard) is a system for scheduling for lean and just in time (JIT)
production. It is a controlling system the logistical chain from a view of production, and is not an
inventory control system. Taiichi Ohno developed Kanban, at Toyota, to find a system for
improvement and maintainence of high level of production.
Kanban became an effective tool in support of running a production system as one, and it has
proved by becoming an excellent way for promoting improvement. Areas where problems occurred
were highlighted by reducing the number of kanbans in circulation.
Origin of KANBAN:
In the late 1940s, Toyota started studying supermarkets with the idea of apply storing and shelf
stocking techniques to the factory floor. At a supermarket, the required quantity is only obtained
by the customers at the required time, no more or less. Furthermore, what it is expected to sell
within a given time frame is only stocked by the supermarket, and only what is needed by the
customers they take, since supply in the future is assured. This observation of the supermarket led
Toyota to viewing the processes as being a customer of one or more preceding processes, and the
processes which are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

through e mail notifications. When the stocks of a particular component gets depleted by the
quantity assigned on kanban card, a kanban trigger is created (which can be manual or automatic),
an order for purchasing is released with the predefined quantity for the vendor defined on the card,
and the vendor is expected to dispatch the material within a specified lead

William Bouuerau s The Elder Sister, By William Bouguereau
This essay reviews the artwork by William Bouguereau in the painting The Elder Sister. It
examines the elements of design and principles practiced in the artwork. This essay assesses the
appropriate use of the elements and the effects that they have on the overall perception of the
painting. The artist has applied an amazing background as well as a perfect balance of the piece.
The elder sister s arm balances with her leg, the baby s foot balances with older sisters foot, the
clouds balance with the bushes. This marks the cause of the initial acclaim of this painting. Upon
viewing the picture one gets a feeling that the artist meant to depict a young lady who is captivated
by her little sibling. This comes out clearly from the use of the angelic almost celestial background
that unquestionably creates the mood of affection. The enchanting smile on the face of the young
girlcommunicates the elder sisters bliss. The painterhas accomplished a lot concerning the use of the
elements in this painting.
The heavenly portrayal of the background and foreground shows a flawless use of space. The
distance of the foreground was well selected for this painting. This is because the two children are
not close enough to exaggerate their physical appearance but they are also not too far away. The
distance covered in the background communicates a message of clarity and relaxation that is
evident in the faces of the painting. The two dimensional portrayal of the painting appears to fit the

Comparing Homer s Iliad With Wolfgang Petersen s Film...
In my response I am going to compare Homer s Iliad with Wolfgang Petersen s film Troy. The
points I am going to compare are the fight between Paris and Menelaus, the role of the gods, the
death of Patroclus and the fight between Hector and Achilles. The Iliad is an epic poem consisting
of 23 books by Homer, which focuses on 50 days in the ninth year of the Trojan War
, whereas the
movie Troy directed by Wolfgang Petersen tells the whole 10 year story of the myth. The Trojan
War happened in the Bronze Age and was a war between the Mycenaean Greece kingdom and the
kingdom of Troy. Homers Iliadis believed to be one of the first works of western literature and was
set 500 years earlier than the time in which he lived. The Iliad is to be listened to, not read,
unless you are the poet performing the epic. The poet would chant or sing the Iliad while being
accompanied by lyre, to help tell the story. It had a set rhythm and metre in each line of the
poem, which the poet had to follow but it is lost in translation as its original written language is
Ancient Greek. The film Troy was released on the 14th May 2004 and is loosely based on the Iliad.
Brad Pitt, who was 40 years old during the making of this movie, and stars as Achilles. The ending
of the film is not from the Iliad but from Virgil s Aeneid, as the Iliad ends with Hectors death and
funeral.
The Role of the Gods
Throughout the Iliad, gods play an important role and are a focal point. They are always helping

E Books Vs. Books
E books are digital versions of traditional books which are available online and are
readable on other electronic devices or computers. While, traditional books are paper books
available at libraries or book stores. E books came into existence in 1930. The godfather of e
book was Bob Brown, who named it as Readies . According to Desiree Dreeuws, in the
1960s, computer scientists developed what were called hypertext editing and file retrieval
systems, which involved document hyperlinking and graphics. These systems are considered by
many to be the first e books. Since then there has been an immense growth in technology
world, which also boosted the usage of e books in the world. However, there has been still a
huge argument on why e books are better than the books and what makes them so different yet
very useful to humankind?
There are always questions leading to e books because of its rapid growth in a short time.
Technologies have a bright future and they are going to have growth in most aspects. According
to Stephen king, The future is going to be what the future is going to be. So no matter how
difficult it gets to switch from a book to an e book, people would have to do it to keep up with
the progressing world. Despite of this, many people from age group of 60s or above still choose
to read paper book, the traditional way. However, most of the youngsters and the elderly people
have switched to e books from their paper books. The

Examples Of True Love In A Midsummer Night s Dream
True love. True love is something that the characters in A Midsummer Night s Dream are fighting
to keep. In the book A Midsummer Night s Dream by William Shakespeare, there are several

How Did Galileo Galilei Contribute To Chemistry
Who do you think of when you are asked to name a famous chemist, astronomer, and physicist
from the past? When I think of famous chemists, astronomers, and physicists, I think of: Galileo
Galilei, an astronomer; Robert Hooke, a physicist; and George Washington Carver, a chemist.
Galileo, Hooke, and Carver all made great contributions to each of their respective fields of
knowledge and had fascinating lives.
Galileo Galilei made a major contribution, in the field of astronomy and even physics. Galileo
Galilei was born February 15, 1564 (AD) in Pisa, Italy, to Giulia Di Cosimo Ammannati and
Vincenzo Galilei. He had five siblings; Michelangelo Galilei, Benedetto Galilei, Giulia Galilei,
Livia Galilei and Virginia Galileo. His father was a lutenist or, someone who plays the lute, (a

This is known as a hard inquiry, and it usually knocks a few points from the credit score.
Bad credit reports can affect ones life in several negative ways. With a bad credit report and a
low credit score, it is harder to receive a credit card, an automobile loan, a mortgage, or possibly
a job. It is important that one is always aware of the credit decisions made. Paying bills late,
maxing out credit cards, and filling out too many credit applications in a brief period will also
have a negative impact on the credit report. To keep a good credit report, one should pay bills on
time and apply for credit sparingly. Last, but certainly not least, one should check their credit
report annually! A free credit report is available from each of the three credit reporting agencies
each year. This is something one should take advantage of since it will help them judge whether
they are managing their credit wisely. It is imperative that one keeps a good credit score. If not,
one could miss out on many opportunities. For example, one may find an opening for their dream
job that they are qualified for, but the negative credit report causes them to not get the job. Do not
let this happen! Maintain a good credit report and opportunities like this will not pass by!

The Federal Trade Commission Act
In 1890, the United States Congress passed the first Anti Trust Law, called the Sherman Act, in an
attempt to combat anti trusts and as a comprehensive charter of economic liberty aimed at
preserving free and unfettered competition as the rule of trade. (The Antitrust Laws). Twenty four
years later in 1914, Congress passed two more Anti TrustLaws: the Federal Trade Commission Act,
which created the Federal Trade Commission whose aim is to protect American consumers, and the
Clayton act, which fills in any loopholes in the Sherman Act. Ultimately, these three Anti Trust Acts
regulate three core problems within the market: restricting the creation of cartels, restricting the
mergers and acquisitions of organizations which could substantially lessen competition , and
prohibit the creation of monopolies in the market ( The Antitrust Laws ).
The history of the antitrust laws date back to the late nineteenth century, following the end of the
Civil War. This time, known as the Gilded Era, began when entrepreneurs began searching for big
profits from their business ideas. Over time, the small business ideas turned into massive
corporations. The creation of new ideas and a radical shift towards industrialism led to the Industrial
Revolution. Amongst the most powerful corporations during this time were the four that still exist
today: John D Rockefeller s Standard Oil Company, Andrew Carnegie s Carnegie Steel, Cornelius
Vanderbilt s New York Central Railroad System, and J.P.

Summary Of The NovelSpill, Simmer Falter, Wither
In the award winning novel Spill, Simmer, Falter, Wither by Sara Baume there is lots of detail
using imagery and a strong unbreakable bond between a man and his dog. During this novel
there will be two characters a 57 year old bitter man named Ray and an eager one eyed dog

challenges that unfold during the novel. Both Ray and One Eye are similar in that they both share
sadness. They both didn t have moms growing up. Ray s mom abandoned him when he was just a
baby. Ray states I d like to believe the house itself gave birth to me (page 12 13). One Eye also didn
t have any parents he was all alone abandoned in the pound and still would be if it wasn t for Ray
(page 6). They also share the same sadness on page 47 Ray says, Sometimes I see the same sadness
in you, the same sadness that s in me. On page 181 Ray asks One Eye At first it was a beautiful
view, but suddenly it seems like a sad place, don t you think it s sad? On the other hand, the
sadness of Ray and One Eye are also different. Ray is sad and feels like he hasn t had a full life he

U.S. Policy on Libyan Chemical Weapons Proliferation Essay
U.S. Policy on Libyan Chemical Weapons Proliferation
Introduction
A legacy of aggression exists between the United States and Libya which pervades every facet of
U.S. foreign policy, particularly in the non proliferation arena. The absolute distrust of
Revolutionary Leader Colonel Mu ammar Abu Minyar al Qadhafi and his government expressed
by U.S. officials has prompted the United States to play the role of policing non proliferation of
nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, the so called weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), in
Libya. As Libya is a party to the Pelindaba Treaty for the establishment of the African nuclear
weapon free zone (ANWFZ), it is bound to a commitment of nuclear non proliferation. However,
this treaty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition of proportionality, however, is difficult to ascertain and the doctrine can only be
invoked in the case of attack. Therefore, U.S. use of nuclear weapons in response to the present
Libyan production of chemical weapons is unjustifiable.
The chemical weapons non proliferation regime boasts a strong treaty in the form of the Chemical
Weapons Convention (CWC), but as Libya is not a party to this treaty, its restrictions have no
bearing on Libyan chemical weapons production. Libya, therefore, presents a problem in that its
chemical weapons production constitutes a world threat, but its actions are fully legal. The Geneva
Protocol of 1925 merely prohibits the use of chemical weapons, not their production, stockpiling, or
possession. Thus, though U.S. policy options are constrained by its agreements and security
assurances, the United States must seek out legal and effective means of ending Libyan production
of chemical weapons.
Background
Libya has long been considered a state threatening the interests of the WMD non proliferation
regimes. Though Libya is a non nuclear weapon state party to the NPT, [its] commitment to the
accord is suspect because of [its] demonstrated interest in acquiring nuclear arms (Jones 1995:15).
This resolution became more suspicious when Libya joined Bhutan and India in casting a negative
vote in the overall 158 to 3 vote in favor of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (Jones 1995:16).

How does Porters Five Forces Model assist an organisation in their strategic planning? Before

So when barriers for entry and exits are high, it means that companies have a higher potential to
make more profit and the opposite occurs when barriers are low. The threat of substitutes: where it
refers to substitute product as those that are available in other industry which can also fulfil the
need and want of the consumers. It can affect competition in an industry by placing an invisible
ceiling on prices which companies within the industry can charge, due to the fact that if the cost of
substitute is low then the consumers will tend to purchase substitutes, therefore limiting the prices
that a company can place on certain items to gain maximum profit. For example, lemonade can be
substituted for a soft drink. Generally, competitive pressures arising from substitute products
increase as the relative price of substitute products declines and as consumer s switching costs
decrease. The bargaining power of buyers is affected by the concentration and number of
consumers, when buyer power is strong, they gain the power to choose between producers and
ultimately equip themselves with bargaining power which then the producers will have to conform
to in order to produce profit, under these conditions the buyer has the most influence in determining
the price of products. Also when buyers have strong bargaining power in the exchange relationship,
competition can be affected in several ways. Powerful buyers can bargain for lower prices, better

Provide clinics for basic healthcare needs to all citizens free of cost. The services would include
immunizations and diagnosis of minor injections and illnesses treatable with antibiotics, etc. This
would alleviate the high costs and long waits at emergency rooms because people without
insurance could be treated by PAs or nurses, which reduces costs. It would also mean people
would potentially get treatment before the illness or infections spreads to others or gets worse.
These clinics would need to be funded. There would be a temporary shortage in qualified

immunization clinics but they are usually crowded. Free flu shots are often provided by companies
such as Wal mart.

Everything ranging from education, religion to the media usually affects the individual s point of

through open mindedness and awareness. At a first glance, the Ancient philosophies appear
irrelevant to the contemporary times, but by media analysis and personal revelation, it is the
modern thought backbone. Fundamentally, Human perception shall be at most times limited. To
experience nature entirely one must take into consideration all the idols that hide them that

Julius Robert Oppenheimer was born April 22, 1904 to Ella Friedman, an artist and Julius
Oppenheimer, a wealthy German textile merchant in New York City, New York. As a child
Robert was interested in geology and was said to have even contacted locally famous geologist to
discuss the rock formations he observed in Central Park. At the age of 17 Oppenheimer began

Then at the age of 22 he was invited to team up with Max Born at Gottingen University in

explains the behavior and nature of matter and energy on the atomic and subatomic plane. He left
Gottingen in 1927 with his PhD and a mark in the world of Quantum theory and Theoretical

A Short History of Progress
The term, progress, is synonymous with phrases that denote moving forward, growth, and
advancement. It seems unorthodox then that Ronald Wright asserts the world has fallen into a
progress trap, a paradox to how progress is typically portrayed as it contradicts the conventional
way life is viewed: as being a natural progression from the outdated and tried towards the new and
improved. Wright posits that it is the world s relentless creation of innovative methods that
ironically contributes to the progress trap rather than to progress itself, the intended objective.
Wright s coinage of the term progress trap refers to the phenomenon of innovations that create new

The humans living in that period were unable to supplement their previous diet, which was rich in

due to resource depletion. What is interesting is the similarities that can be drawn from the

Banning books gives us silence when we need speech. It closes our ears when we need to listen. It
makes us blind when we need sight (Stephen Chbosky). When we think of censorship, we picture
Big Brother staring at us through our televisions. The Thought Police tracking everything we do.
We picture books burning at 451 degrees. However, censorshipdoes not merely live in our
imagination, nor does it live in the distant past. It is something we still see today. Time and time

Hate speech , a term often thrown around to label any idea that is considered offensive or
dangerous to the feelings of others, is growing extremely prevalent in our world. In many countries,
including Canada and France, there are laws specifically banning this hate speech. Saying
something, anything, that can be interpreted as offensive or hateful is illegal in these countries. As
Americans who enjoy freedom of speech, shouldn t we be disturbed by this and fight against it?
Yes, we should, but unfortunately that is not what is happening. In fact, many people are
pushing for these same laws in the United States. Though they currently do not exist, the
censorship still does. We still see riots in the streets over something that was deemed offensive,

universities, supposedly centers of learning, for having unpopular ideas, so called hate speech.
We still see the government itself trying to stop people or groups who hold unpopular, offensive

Reflection On Quality Of Service
This summer I worked at Broad Street Ministries. It s a church that s a major staple in their
community and the homeless. They provide drop in shelter services such as mailing, meals at
different times through the week, social services, after school programing, summer camp,
enrichment classes and much more. Their goal is to build a community that fosters a safe,
inclusive, and welcoming environment that provide upscale meals to those less fortunate. My
overall opinion of the operation is that it has great values, provide quality services, and strives for
excellence in all aid provided.
While interning for the past 3 months I had the opportunity to participate in preparing fresh,
quality nutritious meals for their guest. I served in any capacity needed. I washed dishes, swept
and mopped the floor, prepped food and helped cook at time. My main responsibilities were that of
the head pastry chef. I planned and prepared dessert options for 300 guests based on the
ingredients provided. Meals are planned based on the ingredients picked from the church s garden
and donated from local farms and food establishments. I believe this to be one of this organization
s strengths because a lot of focus is put into providing an upscale meal and dining experience to
those less fortunate.
Equally important, throughout my time there, management was inconsistent in their expectations
and direction. The morale of the kitchen staff was low and seemed to really affect the quality of
service. For

What Role Does The Satan Play In The Canterbury Tales
In Medieval Literature Satan was often used as a character. There was also more evidence during
this period of time. They were not that obvious unlike others but they were there for sure. They
were often symbolized in a certain character s and personalities that they had throughout the
Prologue. The characters were really relatable to the characteristics of Satanhimself. Satan played a
big role in The Canterbury Tales with the Parson, Pardoner, and Summoned. IN the Prologue of
The Canterbury Tales, the Summoner is immediately characterized as Satan. He is described as
red face with big whelks which are pimples just used in another term back then. In the book
Chaucer says, There was a Summoner with us in the place who had a fire red cherubinnish face
(Chaucer line 642). Not only that but he drinks and when he does , he doesn t care what is
going on around him, According to the text it says, And drinking strong wine till all was hazy ,
then he would shout and jabber as if he s crazy (Chaucer line 653). The Summoner would also
blackmail everyone because he knew everybody s secrets and would threaten to expose them if
they didn t do what he would ask... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He never wanted to give offering or tithes, for instance, He much disliked extorting tithe or fee
(Chaucer). So this tells us that he s not the man he says he is but that he s greedy with his
money. Also he was fake and was a whole different character then the man who actually preaches
and is holy and is always going to be there when someone need to be blessed, or needs advise,
According to the text it says, Who truly knew Christ s gospel and would preach it, Devoutly to
parishioner s, and tech it benign and wonderfully diligent, (For so he proved in great adversity)
(Chaucer 109). He was everything everybody thought but this shows that everybody has something
or even that some things are too good to be

How Culture And Perception Are Directly Influenced By...
The idea behind language as culture is explained succinctly by dividing the description into a
framework of separate ideas. By breaking down how perception is developed through environment
and the presence of norms, culture is demonstrated as the provider that perpetuates this social
environment. The cohesion required of large populations begins with cooperation and
communication. From the expression of traditions, the reinforcements of norms through stories and
the passing of knowledge, language is the cohesive glue of people to environment. This can be
exemplified further by a pursuit that transcends individual populations to create a separate culture
and therefore maintains its own environment. In this paper I hope to analyze and illustrate how
culture and perceptionare directly influenced by language.
Beginning with the knowledge that perception drives the creation of anything from human minds
or hands, it can easily be suggested that interactions with the surrounding world are subject to this
same perception. The very experience of living is sensory and and dependant on what is presented
to stimulate those senses. Following this logic what has been created through the influence of
environment is, according to the author and Material Culturalist Richard Grassby, subject to both
etic and emic analysis (592). The reality of social interactions within a given environment, and the
people who inhabit this space, must also be structured to be perceived and understood

Michael Jordan Hero
Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships (Jordan). Michael Jordan
a leader, champion, and hero strives for greatness in any setting. He played every single
basketball game like it could have been his last. The life of Michael Jordan is overflowing with
excitement, suspension, and happiness. He played like he wanted to win. Jordan is a hero for
contributing to basketballand others, putting others first, and inspiring others. He ignored hate, he
didn t care for it, and he continued his road to becoming a hero. Jordan didn t give up, even in the
hardest of times. He fought for the one thing he wanted in basketball: to win.

They have invested so much in me (28). Michael Jordan started his shoe line in 1985 when Peter
came out with the symbol that are still on the shoes. The shoe line led to a clothing line with the
same symbol and quotes or phrases from Jordan himself. Michael has a huge impact and
contribution towards the NBA, his team, and all the fans.
Michael Jordan also had the common sense to put others first and looking out for others, instead
of always putting and thinking about himself first. He always thought about his teammates first
and did whatever he had to for them. Porter writes, I am not going to let you lose your first game
(34). Jordan says this to teammate Doug Collins after Doug comments that Jordan doesn t have
to do all of it on his own. Since it was Collins first game he didn t want him to lose. Jordan also
likes to think of the people who helped him to where he is now. He certainly still knows how to
the game, (115) writes Porter. Jordan talk about his college coach, Dean Smith, from University
of North Carolina. Jordan played for Coach Smith for all four years of college. Smith was a
former basketball player himself. Dean Smith recently died this year at age 83 with two national
championships at UNC! Michael Jordan always knew wasn t just about him, he had to put others
first even if it wasn t beneficial to

Engineer Wonders of the Qin and Han Dynasties to The Roman...
I have been fortunate enough through my travels to have trans versed the Great Wall of China,
which was constructed by Qin Shihuang in order to unify the six states, he ordered General
Meng Tian to connect the existing walls and to extend them further as a front line defense
against possible invasion, it was an exhilarating experience, the piece of the wall I started to
ascend, it was extremely steep with four levels, the configuration of the wall was unusual, in the
design of the steps, they were built in a non uniform format. The steps ranged in various sizes,
from approximately 4 to what seemed like 12 , so in turn , it made the climb very uncomfortable,
it also showed me that I was defiantly out of shape, but I did eventually make it to the second
level, and looking over the mountain terrain, and along the hillside where it was built, I had a rush
of adrenaline and realized that the Wall of China, was every bit as exhilarating to me today, as the
day it was constructed. This engineering, of the Qin dynastywas truly an amazing feat. I will
examine some key elements, while comparing the Qin, and Han dynasties, to The Roman Empire.
Both cultures had implemented an impressive, society by introducing engineering wonders, an
extensive political system that managed vast amounts of people, and a military to rule over their
territories. While looking at the Han, Qin, and Roman structures, one interesting tidbit of
information was that the great WALL of Chinais the only

  • 2. Colonialism and Morality in The Moonstone and The Man Who... Colonialism and Morality in The Moonstone and The Man Who Would Be King Let us presuppose to begin with that the cursed jewel is an impossibility and the powers of the Moonstone or any other gem for that matter only exist on an atomic level ( i.e. the energies which bind such objects together and make them what they are). Additionally it should be considered that no such object is the means by which a being exerts powers and no such object consciously exerts powers itself. Notions of the cursed or powerful jewel can be seen as a bi product of what Said terms Orientalism. Said describes The Orient as almost a European invention, a place of exotic beings and remarkable experiences. (Ashcroft et al ed. p.87) This hypothesis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Moonstone is a narrative device which illuminates the text in multiple ways. Such a device remains popular in western adventure literature and film, whether in the form of an Egyptian scarab or a monkey s claw. The mystical object with powerful properties is involved in adventure tales from Conan Doyle through Indiana Jones, even one of the most famous of modern legends the fates of Carter and Caernarfon excavators of Tutankahmun s tomb involves a curse and shameful Orientalism. Perhaps the best indicator of such notions becoming part of western folklore is when they become utilised as simple metaphor. This is apparent in John Huston s 1975 film version of Rudyard Kipling s The Man Who Would Be King. The desire of the central protagonists; Peachy Carnahan and Daniel Dravitt to become Kings of an isolated region of the Indian sub continent is built upon by the abundance of treasures that becomes available to them, an aspect absent from Kipling s original tale. Huston s version increases the greed of the two adventurers which in turn provides a more satisfying justification of their fates than we receive in the original short story. Whilst admiring giant rubies Huston s Peachy remarks All we need do is fill our pockets and we d be millionaires. Dravitt then retorts that if they stayed they would be Kings. Nevertheless, my group was able to create a unique project that highlighted a monumental string of events that shaped the Arab world as we see it today. The topic decided upon was the Arab Spring in Egypt, specifically looking at how Facebook existed in its timeframe as a mechanism for collaboration and action toward a revolution and regime change. Together, we set to understand the Egyptian revolution beginning in 2010 in tangible terms that could be communicated to the average student, which we thought, was best done through a simplified simulation of how Facebook was used as a major tool and function. My research attempted to emphasize the actual role of social media and provide insight to Facebook as a tool instead of a stakeholder. The match that was able to ignite and unite the people of Egypt to act on their dislike of the regime and its corruption came with two men: Khaled Said and Wael Ghonim. On June 6, 2010, in Alexandria, two police officers approached Khaled Said and arrested him on the premise that the possessed a video material that implicates members of the police in a drug deal (Wedeman). Multiple witnesses from that day testified that the situation escalated and resulted in Saeed being dragged across the street by the police officers and beaten to death while doctors tried to intervene and revive him. Ali Kassem, Said uncle stated in conjunction with his nephew s death, Every family in Egypt has seen something like this happen to a member. I will feel like I have attained justice only if the regime falls and a new government is formed, (Londono, 2). The official autopsy and police report after the event stated that Saeed suffocated in an attempt to swallow drugs, and the original arrest was for theft and weapons possession (Wedeman). • 5. U.s. Gangs And The Gangs Drug routes are associated and may have originated with U.S. gangs in an effort for drug cartels to amp up and focus on their production, leaving the logistics to the gangs. The drug cartels have chosen to align with U.S. gangs based on similar philosophies of honor, allegiance, and loyalty combined with similar business practices and levels of hierarchy. The largest U.S. gangs are structured similarly to giant corporations that succeed with levels of management teams with the ultimate goal of profit, U.S. gangs are no different as they often legitimize themselves as profitable business. Asian gangs are common in California and on the east coast but locating scholarly articles about their operations is a daunting task that required a personal interview with a former gang member. The diverse ethnic and cultural population movement into the U.S. has made it a melting pot for people searching for a better life. Many of these individuals find a life of peace, serenity, growth, and stable work while others swing the opposite direction leading a life of rebellion, crime, and drug use or trafficking. S.H. Decker et al. (2009) suggest this theory is accurate claiming that immigration, ethnicity, and culture matter insofar as fear, mistrust, threat, and conflict are present in the areas where ethnic groups are arriving...and are breeding grounds for gang formation (p. 395). • 6. The Effects Of Harsh Coaching Of Young Athletes Essay Harsh coaching of young athletes can often steer kids away from sports all together, but if the coaches get it right, the kids learn important skills for their futures. At a young age, children need discipline in order to put them in the right direction for their futures. This discipline is found in numerous forms, and one of the most common forms is through sports. David Brooks said, The best coaches still live by a code, and they make no apology for demanding that kids live up to it. (Brooks) Though strict coachingcan turn some young children and their parents away from sports, it can give kids a good role model, teach them discipline, and help them learn to get along with other people. Parents often have concerns for how coaches treat their young athletes, but most coaches are the best character role models that a child will have. As David Brooks, author of the article Organized Sports Can Benefit Children , says Coaches have become the leading moral instructors in America today. (Brooks). Groups like The Positive Coaching Alliance exist solely to keep coaches doing their job of creating mature and respectful athletes (Positive). Children need these positive role models in their lives. Even if a child has great role models as parents, it is even better to have one outside of the family. • 8. Physical Properties Of Matter, Density, Mass, And Volume One of the physical properties of matter is density. Density is defined as a measure of how much mass is contained in a given unit volume. A physical property can be measured without changing the chemical identity of the substance. Since pure substances have unique density values, measuring the density of a substance can help identify that substance. Densityis determined by dividing the mass of a substance by its volume. Density, volume, and mass have a clear relationship that can clearly be shown by the mathematical formula: Density= Mass/Volume In our experiment we used the determined mass and volume of the sample to calculate the density of an irregular solid and of an unknown liquid. We then compared our density of our liquid with densities of known substances to determine the identity of the unknown substance. The purpose of the experiment was to determine the density of a solid and an unknown liquid. Furthermore, we also evaluated the relationships of density, mass, and volume. Keywords: Density, Mass, Volume Introduction Which is heavier, a pound of feathers or a pound of lead? I m sure we have all heard this pretty naive riddle. However, some people would think that the answer would be the pound of lead. However, after this experiment we should all know the answer. All matter has volume and mass. Density expresses the relationship of these two primary properties of matter. Mass is the measure of how much matter an object contains. The more matter an object ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To find this information, it is often necessary to access the partnerships general ledger and evaluate the contributions that were made during the year. The general ledger is also helpful in discerning the nature of certain vague account titles such as building improvements. When determining how these assets should be depreciated for tax purposes, the general ledger provides adequate detail to determine the appropriate MACRS recovery period. After the client provided trial balance has been reformatted and its accounts have been made more specific, I often have to perform an accrual to cash conversion. This is because the clients books are kept on an accrual basis but their returns are prepared under the cash basis method of accounting. Therefore, because the cash method only reflects transactions for which cash was paid or received in the current period, accounts such as accrued expenses, accounts payable, and prepaid rent cannot be included on the return. Therefore is necessary to make adjustments to the trial balance before it is imported into the tax software. For example, to remove accounts receivable from the trial balance before I import it, I would credit accounts receivable and debit revenue. Once all accrual accounts have been reversed out, I use the newly created tax trial balance to complete the actual return. Once the return is completed and deemed correct, I then update the basis schedules for each member of the partnership to account for their outside ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Causes Of The Jim Crow Laws My position is that the Jim Crows Laws were entirely outrageous and gave no real hope to the people who truly needed it. The Jim Crow laws are the laws that made the separation of the nonwhites (Expert Space) from the whites legal. Some of the whites used to think that they were naturally smarter and more civilized than blacks (Expert Space). The creation of the Jim Crow laws took place in about 1880, after World War II ended; it ended due to the Civil Rights Act in the 1950 s. These laws were started in the US Supreme Court, though there were fifty states that didn t adopt the laws: Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and Wisconsin. This segregation took place mostly in the south, like the slavery that was going on in the US up until 1865. This leads to the first cause of the Jim Crow laws. Racism: it has been going on since the start of man. White people thought and some still think that they were and are superior to the African Americanpeople. It got really bad when the white people enslaved the people of color in 1619 1865. Most of the former slave owners were so furious over the ending of the Jim Crow laws, that they continued to treat the black peopleterribly. They were ecstatic when the Jim Crow laws were created about fifteen years later so they could appear superior to the black people once again. Origin of KANBAN: In the late 1940s, Toyota started studying supermarkets with the idea of apply storing and shelf stocking techniques to the factory floor. At a supermarket, the required quantity is only obtained by the customers at the required time, no more or less. Furthermore, what it is expected to sell within a given time frame is only stocked by the supermarket, and only what is needed by the customers they take, since supply in the future is assured. It examines the elements of design and principles practiced in the artwork. This essay assesses the appropriate use of the elements and the effects that they have on the overall perception of the painting. The artist has applied an amazing background as well as a perfect balance of the piece. The elder sister s arm balances with her leg, the baby s foot balances with older sisters foot, the clouds balance with the bushes. This marks the cause of the initial acclaim of this painting. Upon viewing the picture one gets a feeling that the artist meant to depict a young lady who is captivated by her little sibling. This comes out clearly from the use of the angelic almost celestial background that unquestionably creates the mood of affection. The enchanting smile on the face of the young girlcommunicates the elder sisters bliss. The painterhas accomplished a lot concerning the use of the elements in this painting. The heavenly portrayal of the background and foreground shows a flawless use of space. The distance of the foreground was well selected for this painting. This is because the two children are not close enough to exaggerate their physical appearance but they are also not too far away. • 18. Comparing Homer s Iliad With Wolfgang Petersen s Film... In my response I am going to compare Homer s Iliad with Wolfgang Petersen s film Troy. The points I am going to compare are the fight between Paris and Menelaus, the role of the gods, the death of Patroclus and the fight between Hector and Achilles. The Iliad is an epic poem consisting of 23 books by Homer, which focuses on 50 days in the ninth year of the Trojan War , whereas the movie Troy directed by Wolfgang Petersen tells the whole 10 year story of the myth. The Trojan War happened in the Bronze Age and was a war between the Mycenaean Greece kingdom and the kingdom of Troy. Homers Iliadis believed to be one of the first works of western literature and was set 500 years earlier than the time in which he lived. The Iliad is to be listened to, not read, unless you are the poet performing the epic. The poet would chant or sing the Iliad while being accompanied by lyre, to help tell the story. It had a set rhythm and metre in each line of the poem, which the poet had to follow but it is lost in translation as its original written language is Ancient Greek. The film Troy was released on the 14th May 2004 and is loosely based on the Iliad. Brad Pitt, who was 40 years old during the making of this movie, and stars as Achilles. The ending of the film is not from the Iliad but from Virgil s Aeneid, as the Iliad ends with Hectors death and funeral. (The Antitrust Laws). Twenty four years later in 1914, Congress passed two more Anti TrustLaws: the Federal Trade Commission Act, which created the Federal Trade Commission whose aim is to protect American consumers, and the Clayton act, which fills in any loopholes in the Sherman Act. Ultimately, these three Anti Trust Acts regulate three core problems within the market: restricting the creation of cartels, restricting the mergers and acquisitions of organizations which could substantially lessen competition , and prohibit the creation of monopolies in the market ( The Antitrust Laws ). The history of the antitrust laws date back to the late nineteenth century, following the end of the Civil War. U.S. Policy on Libyan Chemical Weapons Proliferation Essay U.S. Policy on Libyan Chemical Weapons Proliferation Introduction A legacy of aggression exists between the United States and Libya which pervades every facet of U.S. foreign policy, particularly in the non proliferation arena. The absolute distrust of Revolutionary Leader Colonel Mu ammar Abu Minyar al Qadhafi and his government expressed by U.S. officials has prompted the United States to play the role of policing non proliferation of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons, the so called weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), in Libya. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The definition of proportionality, however, is difficult to ascertain and the doctrine can only be invoked in the case of attack. Therefore, U.S. use of nuclear weapons in response to the present Libyan production of chemical weapons is unjustifiable. The chemical weapons non proliferation regime boasts a strong treaty in the form of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), but as Libya is not a party to this treaty, its restrictions have no bearing on Libyan chemical weapons production. Libya, therefore, presents a problem in that its chemical weapons production constitutes a world threat, but its actions are fully legal. The Geneva Protocol of 1925 merely prohibits the use of chemical weapons, not their production, stockpiling, or possession. Thus, though U.S. policy options are constrained by its agreements and security assurances, the United States must seek out legal and effective means of ending Libyan production of chemical weapons. Background Libya has long been considered a state threatening the interests of the WMD non proliferation regimes. Though Libya is a non nuclear weapon state party to the NPT, [its] commitment to the accord is suspect because of [its] demonstrated interest in acquiring nuclear arms (Jones 1995:15). So when barriers for entry and exits are high, it means that companies have a higher potential to make more profit and the opposite occurs when barriers are low. The threat of substitutes: where it refers to substitute product as those that are available in other industry which can also fulfil the need and want of the consumers. It can affect competition in an industry by placing an invisible ceiling on prices which companies within the industry can charge, due to the fact that if the cost of substitute is low then the consumers will tend to purchase substitutes, therefore limiting the prices that a company can place on certain items to gain maximum profit. For example, lemonade can be substituted for a soft drink. Generally, competitive pressures arising from substitute products increase as the relative price of substitute products declines and as consumer s switching costs decrease. The bargaining power of buyers is affected by the concentration and number of consumers, when buyer power is strong, they gain the power to choose between producers and ultimately equip themselves with bargaining power which then the producers will have to conform to in order to produce profit, under these conditions the buyer has the most influence in determining the price of products. By breaking down how perception is developed through environment and the presence of norms, culture is demonstrated as the provider that perpetuates this social environment. The cohesion required of large populations begins with cooperation and communication. From the expression of traditions, the reinforcements of norms through stories and the passing of knowledge, language is the cohesive glue of people to environment. This can be exemplified further by a pursuit that transcends individual populations to create a separate culture and therefore maintains its own environment. In this paper I hope to analyze and illustrate how culture and perceptionare directly influenced by language. Beginning with the knowledge that perception drives the creation of anything from human minds or hands, it can easily be suggested that interactions with the surrounding world are subject to this same perception. The very experience of living is sensory and and dependant on what is presented to stimulate those senses. Following this logic what has been created through the influence of environment is, according to the author and Material Culturalist Richard Grassby, subject to both etic and emic analysis (592). The reality of social interactions within a given environment, and the people who inhabit this space, must also be structured to be perceived and understood ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Engineer Wonders of the Qin and Han Dynasties to The Roman... I have been fortunate enough through my travels to have trans versed the Great Wall of China, which was constructed by Qin Shihuang in order to unify the six states, he ordered General Meng Tian to connect the existing walls and to extend them further as a front line defense against possible invasion, it was an exhilarating experience, the piece of the wall I started to ascend, it was extremely steep with four levels, the configuration of the wall was unusual, in the design of the steps, they were built in a non uniform format. The steps ranged in various sizes, from approximately 4 to what seemed like 12 , so in turn , it made the climb very uncomfortable, it also showed me that I was defiantly out of shape, but I did eventually make it to the second level, and looking over the mountain terrain, and along the hillside where it was built, I had a rush of adrenaline and realized that the Wall of China, was every bit as exhilarating to me today, as the day it was constructed. This engineering, of the Qin dynastywas truly an amazing feat. I will examine some key elements, while comparing the Qin, and Han dynasties, to The Roman Empire.
