High school student publications first began in the Philippines in 1911 with the publication of The Coconut at the Manila High School, now known as Araullo High School. Over the following decades, numerous other high school newspapers were established across the country. The Campus Journalism Act of 1991 was the first major regulation governing high school publications. Formal journalism education in high schools began in 1952 with a teacher at Mapa High School experimenting with journalism classes, which were then adopted by other schools. Journalism classes train students in various types of news writing to prepare them for working on their school newspapers.
