The Storage Challenge for Healthcare
2
Sources: University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine, 2014,
The Doctors Company, and IBM Watson Health
The Data Explosion
Medical data is
expected to double
every 73 days by
2020.
The Great Unknown
80% of health data is invisible to
current systems because it’s
unstructured.
Protecting Images
Hospitals are required by
law to keep images for 7
years, but many keep them
longer.
• Adult patients, 10 years
from the date the patient
was last seen.
• Minor patients, 28 years
from the patient's birth.
• Deceased patients, five
years from the date of
death.

Spectrum Virtualize Brings Controller-based Encryption
Putting the encryption activity in the controller creates
additional options
Self encrypting media not required, reducing costs
– Internal storage encrypted with SAS controller hardware chip
– External storage encrypted with AES-NI CPU instruction
Available on SVC, FlashSystem V9000, Storwize V7000, V7000
Unified, V5030 and V5020
Each system has a unique encryption key
At power-on, restarts or re-key operations, the key is retrieved
and used to unlock the arrays (mdisks)
If a drive or array is removed from the environment the data on it
cannot be retrieved without the key
Keys are stored on USB flash drives or IBM SKLM
At least one USB flash drive or IBM SKLM server must be
present at power-up to gain access to mdisks
Once booted, the system will function normally without USB flash
drives or IBM SKLM servers

Solid State Drive options
• Due to repetitive ‘write-erase’ cycles, flash drives have a
life span or ‘write-endurance’
• Most current “write intensive" flash drives have
endurance that allows up to 10 Drive Writes per Day
(DWPD)
• For example, with a 2TB flash drive, you can write up
to 20TB on that one drive in a day and maintain the
planned life
• Flash drive vendors have engineered a lower cost drive,
qualified for up to one DWPD
• Often called “read intensive” (RI) flash drives
• With a 2TB drive, you could write up to 2TB to that
drive per day and maintain the planned life
• One DWPD drives can meet the vast majority of workload
demands
• IBM and competitors are aggressively moving to all-flash
arrays with extensive use of read intensive drives for
competitive reasons

Vendor Neutral Archives are the future
33
A Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) is a storage repository
in which images, documents, and potentially any other
file of clinical relevance are stored.
– A standard format with a standard interface, such
that they can be accessed in a vendor-neutral
manner, irrespective of the originating PACS or
other viewing, acquisition and workflow
management system.
– Originating sources are changeable without having
to change the data formats or interface of the
storage repository.
– Can offer lifecycle management, multi-site access,
archiving to colder less expensive storage for long-
term retention, and disaster recovery protection.
– Maintain patient privacy and security
Personalized healthcare is dependent on all of your data being available all of the time
by all caregivers. Medical breakthroughs are dependent on finding insights from
diverse medical data stores

Data-at-Rest Encryption
• Files are encrypted by application node
• Each file assigned random File-key
• Master-key granularity by file or fileset, determined by
policies
• IBM SKLM stores Master-keys, and nodes must have
appropriate SKLM credentials
• Data is encrypted from application node all the way to
NSD (flash or disk) media
• FIPS 140-2 certified
Secure Erase
• Files are cryptographically erased by deleting their
Master-key
• Files that “stay” are re-Mastered to new key

IBM Cloud Object Storage System – Single vs. Multi-Site
48
Single Site
Better performance,
when site-tolerance
not a factor, better
than traditional
RAID-5 / RAID-6
Two Site – Vault Mirroring
Allows customers to leverage existing two-site
infrastructure. Provides concurrent reads and
writes despite communication disruption
between locations. Local data better than
traditional RAID-5 / RAID-6
Three to Nine Sites – Geographically Dispersed
Consider adding IBM SoftLayer or leverage existing datacenter locations to
provide a broader distribution of data for higher availability and scalability

Challenge
For over-stretched hospital staff, every extra
minute at a patient’s bedside counts towards
quality care.
Henry Mayo wanted to reduce the time they
spent accessing electronic health records
(EHRs).
Solution
Henry Mayo became an early adopter of the
latest release of MEDITECH’s EHR solution,
and partnered with Key Information Systems to
deploy VersaStack from IBM and Cisco to run
the new software.
• Cuts
response times, boosting staff productivity to
help meet growing demand for care
• Prepares
Henry May for the future, with easy scaling
options and rapid provisioning.
• Slashes
infrastructure management for new capabilities
with no additional headcount.

Only IBM can deliver …
A fully integrated software defined infrastructure solution that includes
workload scheduling and virtualized storage.
Integrated data migration tools with the most flexible tiering options from flash
to disk to IBM Cloud Object Storage to Tape Libraries.
Cognitive Health with Watson on our scalable shared storage infrastructure.
Run analytic jobs on data in-place to discover new patient / medical insights.
Fully integrated data Protection with Spectrum Protect at significantly lower
cost than dedup appliances like data domain.

The Great Unknown 80% of health data is invisible to current systems because it’s unstructured. Protecting Images Hospitals are required by law to keep images for 7 years, but many keep them longer. • Adult patients, 10 years from the date the patient was last seen. • Minor patients, 28 years from the patient's birth. • Deceased patients, five years from the date of death.
