Flash Module Reliability – Safety Beyond Compare
• When Vendors sell flash storage, based on SSDs, it is critical those systems be able to survive double drive
failures. Customers would like to be able to survive more than two failures, but are left with no option other
than to take what they can get.
• IBM wasn’t satisfied with the limitations of off-the-shelf SSDs. We designed “true” flash systems where we
work directly with the flash chips. IBM created dedicated flash modules to provide customers with greater
performance and reliability.
In a 5.7TB FlashSystem module, a quarter of the flash chips on the module can fail before it needs to be replaced.
• 10 of the 64 flash chips in a module can fail without issue.
• If the 11th chip fails, the module will issue a warning, but continue to function
• If the 17th chip fails, the module is halted and the hot spare is brought in.
At this point, the system is still online and rebuilding the parity protection
It would take another 17+ chip failures on a different single module to see a dual drive failure

Health Binning and Heat Segregation – at the SUB-chip layer
Most SSD providers wear all flash blocks the same
• Weaker blocks wear out faster, eating into overprovisioning and resulting in earlier replacement
FlashCore Technology continuously monitors the health of each block
• FlashCore uses several sophisticated parameters to determine health
• Hotter data is put in healthier blocks!
• FlashCore writes data together that has the same approximate access heat
• If FlashCore detects a relatively large # of stale pages for the same address, those pages get isolated into a separate
set of flash blocks to reduce write amplification
• Heat bins get moved around, keeping blocks within 5% of wear
This asymmetrical wear leveling and sub-chip tiering work in conjunction
• Health binning: up to 57% improvement in endurance!
• Heat segregation: up to 45% reduction in write amplification!
Asymmetrical wear leveling results in significantly higher endurance in real life workloads!

    Flash Module Reliability– Safety Beyond Compare • When Vendors sell flash storage, based on SSDs, it is critical those systems be able to survive double drive failures. Customers would like to be able to survive more than two failures, but are left with no option other than to take what they can get. • IBM wasn’t satisfied with the limitations of off-the-shelf SSDs. We designed “true” flash systems where we work directly with the flash chips. IBM created dedicated flash modules to provide customers with greater performance and reliability. In a 5.7TB FlashSystem module, a quarter of the flash chips on the module can fail before it needs to be replaced. • 10 of the 64 flash chips in a module can fail without issue. • If the 11th chip fails, the module will issue a warning, but continue to function • If the 17th chip fails, the module is halted and the hot spare is brought in. At this point, the system is still online and rebuilding the parity protection It would take another 17+ chip failures on a different single module to see a dual drive failure Safety beyond compare!
