Although it is practical from a literary and historical standpoint, object driven
analyses of Shakespeare s First Folio fail to account for, as Brown says, the story
of the object asserting itself as a thing. By treating the First Folio as only a book
meant to be read for information these analyses let it stagnate in a subject object
binary which leads us to falsely believe that the subject creates knowledge from the
object. Or as Brown says, we are stuck viewing the object as a code by which our
interpretive attention makes them meaningful (Brown 4). This line of thinking is
problematic because the object then lacks agency. When the object transitions to a
thing, the binary no longer applies and we can see that it has knowledge with or
without a subject involved. Additionally, this shift out of the binary allows for the
thing to become its own subject. If, as Baudrillard believes it is the subject that
totalizes the world (qtd in Brown) then this implies that the thing is not merely
passively impacted by the world but actively impacts the world with its presence.
However, only viewing the First Folio as a thing in opposition to an object also limits
our study of it. Instead, I propose that we should examine the story of an object
becoming a thing. Before I further my argument I want to take a moment to fully
examine the difference between an object and a thing and why current scholarship
has failed to acknowledge the importance of the First Folio becoming a thing.

Boom
While reading The Hiding Place, I was frequently inspired by the power and
insight behind Corrie ten Boom s words. However, two of her statements
particularly stood out to me. The first was when she had said Some knowledge is
too heavy... you cannot bear it...your father will carry it until you are able. (ten
Boom 175) This phrase is so meaningful because it was a lesson she had learned
from her own father when she was young, but now she uses it in her own teaching
and relates it to her heavenly father as well. The second quote that stood out to me
was when she had said His will is our hiding place. Lord Jesus, keep me in Your
will. (ten Boom 234) This statement refers to Corrie s realization of how everything
had happened for a reason. This was her protection or hiding place through the
horrors of the concentration camp and her personal losses. I found these two quotes
to be the most perceptive phrases of Corrie s that spoke to me the most. My favorite
character in The Hiding Place would undeniably be Corrie s older sister, Betsie ten
Boom. Betsie ten Boom was portrayed with an incredible sense of optimism and
faith that could shine a light at the darkest of times. Another quality I admired was
her merciful heart that managed to feel sorrow for enemies and be quick to forgive.
Betsie s positivity, forgiveness and faithfulness all contributed to create a remarkable
personality and character in this particular novel.

Convertible, she points out several elements often overlooked when reading the
short story for the first time. At first glance, the story appears definably tragic
(Kryhoski). Kryhoski claims that if the reader were to investigate author Louise
Erdrich s background, the story would seem less of a tragedy and more of a
reflection of her upbringing. As the narrator in The Red Convertible, Lyman seems to
be recalling the tale from his memories rather than telling the events as they occur.

The first journey is the trip he and his brother, Lyman, took to purchase the red

Vietnam. The Henry that leaves the reservation to fight in the war is not the same
Henry who returns three years later. Even the red convertible brings no life to
Henry, Korb claims. The author focuses on Lyman s attempts to bring his brother
around to his old self, including the destruction of the red convertible. On the final
journey, the trip to the Red River, Lyman is hopeful and believes that his brother is
finally turning a new leaf. However, Henry is still just as haunted and troubled as
before. Korb reinforces that losing the red convertible is losing the ability to
experience freedom and joy, which explains why Lyman refuses to accept the car
when Henry offers it to him. Lyman tries to beat feelings of hope back into his brother
