Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
2
The members of the health team includes all
those working together to achieve the
objective of the team ranging from the
technical staffs/members
(doctors, physiotherapist, occupational
therapists, speech and language therapists,
clinical psychologist, social worker, nurses,
medical assistants, paramedics) to support
staffs/members (ward boy, cleaners, drivers).
The health team may work on a fixed center or
may be mobile depending upon the needs.
Leading Health Team
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
3
The success of a health team depends upon
how a health team is being lead. Leading a
health team includes the following steps:
1. Setting and sharing objectives with the team
members
2. Motivating the team members
3. Delegating authority and responsibility
1. Setting and sharing objectives
with the team members:
 People work well together when they agree with
one another and share in the task of setting and
achieving the objectives of the whole team.
 To fulfill the objectives of an organization those
who work for the organization should know what
its objectives are.
 People who have not shared in setting
objectives may waste much effort on activities
that do not bring achievement of the
objectives. People who are opposed to the
objectives may obstruct the work of the
organization.

Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
5
 It is very difficult for real progress to be made
in health care without the active cooperation of
all concerned team members.
 The leader of the health team deal first with
the people and then with the things. People
do not give their best when they are
ordered.
 One of the best way perhaps the only way is to
ensure that people agree on the objectives
and that they are motivated to achieve them.
2. Motivating the team
members :
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
6
 Motivation is an inner impulse that induces a
person to act in a certain way.
 Motivation is an inner impulse that determines
what people do and the energy and
enthusiasm with which they do it.
 It is the basis upon which personal decisions
are made.
Continue…
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
7
Motivation is a series of internal drives within a
person at different levels:
Level 1:To obtain the necessities of life-
food, shelter, clothing
Level 2: To satisfy social needs-
Companionship, love, position, respect
Level 3: To ensure some degree of personal
satisfaction-
Talent, abilities
Continue…
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
8
In motivation there six main motivators in work:
I. Achievement:
Most people like to do things well and
succeed. Their satisfaction in success and in
getting things done well comes largely from
achieving what they expect to be able to achieve
and what they aim at achieving.
A good team leader helps his team members
to achieve by giving them clear instructions,
suitable training , facilities and supplies they
need for their work.
Help People to Achieve Work Objective.
Continue…
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
9
II. Recognition:
Very few people are satisfied with simply knowing
in their own minds that they have been
successful. Most people like others also to know
of their success. An individual can be sure that
others know of his/her success only when they
respond to their achievements that is
acknowledge their success.
Lack of recognition can be very discouraging.
Leaders should praise others when praise is due
which will encourage one to work with full
satisfaction.
Continue…
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
10
III. The work itself:
People like to do useful and worthwhile work,
helpful to other people and helping themselves
to achieve their goal. Curative
services apparently seems to be worthwhile
then preventive services though the impact of
preventive services are long-term.
Explain The Value of Work
Continue…
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
11
IV. Responsibility:
To have responsibility is to able to accept the
consequences, good or bad of a decision or
an action. Most people welcome responsibility;
some fear it.
Help Others To Take Responsibility
Continue…
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
12
V. Advancement:
Advancement is a form of recognition.
Recognition without reward is not convincing.
People prefer recognition that comes in a
tangible form such as increase of salary or
more responsibility, with freedom to use their
own initiative, which leads to job satisfaction.
Help Others Train For Promotion
Continue…
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
13
VI. Self Improvement:
People like to become mature and to develop
themselves. Many people make great
sacrifices to improve themselves. Many people
want opportunities to discover, develop, master
and use their own abilities to the fullest extent
in their work. Team leaders can play a vital role
to provide opportunities to the team members
for their development.
Provide Opportunities For Personal
Development
Continue…
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
14
There are six common causes of dissatisfactions
which acts as a barrier in motivation in work:
I. Inefficient administration
II. Incompetent supervision
III. Poor personal relation
IV. Poor leadership qualities
V. Low pay
VI. Bad working condition
Continue…
Dr.Kamal Ahmed MBBS.MPH.MPhil.
15
3. Delegating authority and responsibility
 The team leader is responsible for the work of
the team.
 The leader is also responsible for the team’s
failure and success.
 At the same time the team members are
responsible for the particular task of their
individual job they have been delegated with
responsibility.
