On Monday, September 10, 2012, Jim Kouzes, renowned leadership guru, presented his latest findings from his 25th anniversary, 5th edition book, The Leadership Challenge to a full house co-hosted by UCSC Extension Silicon Valley and SBODN, the South Bay Organization Development Network.
Leaders live in a time of unprecedented change and solutions aren’t always obvious. Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) are lurking at every corner. To thrive in this complex world, leader’s need support in advancing their thinking capabilities. This session will provide practical frameworks and resources on how to develop VUCA skills in your leaders.
Agile leadership to address the challenges of the VUCA worldChristian Mies
Project Management today has to deal with increasing complexity and various challenges. Many of the issues we see result from the often chaotic environment of these projects. This environment can best be characterized by the term VUCA. The principle of self-organization provides one approach to reduce the complexity to a level we can manage. Adequate leadership methodologies are a key driver for this change.
Presentation about Leadership and Emotional Intelligence made in Phoenix, AZ in October 2014 at PMI (Project Management Institute) North America LIM (Leadership Institute Meeting).
These are the slides (including the exercises) from a 1-day workshop I designed, which covered a range of skills and tools to help managers cope with an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) world.
Leading change is not as easy as it sounds. This slide pack gives an overview of a presentation I gave to a group of front line manager at a regional hospital in Red Deer Alberta. Enjoy! Marlies

This session will provide an opportunity to other training professionals to learn more about how to create a culture that will demonstrate intent in regard to developing leaders using the components of emotional intelligence (EQ). This session aims to answer why EQ is important in today’s leaders. Participants will engage in a class activity to better understand how they can use emotional intelligence in their own roles, why to use it in leadership development and how to get started within their own organizations.
Is your culture dominated by fear, blame and other toxic behaviors? Are people protecting themselves rather than pulling together, obsessing over customers and helping your organization succeed? If so, you may have a lack of psychological safety. When it's present, individuals feel safe being vulnerable, safe taking risks, safe making mistakes and safe handling conflict. Long-term high performance depends on psychological safety. It leads to greater transparency, closer relationships, better collaboration and better outcomes. As leaders, it's our duty to develop, model and foster psychological safety. In this interactive workshop by Joshua Kerievsky and Heidi Helfand, you'll develop skills for growing psychological safety in yourself, your teams and your organization.

Presentation for Mile High PMI Workshop on April 11, 2009
Abstract:
This workshop will focus on the concept of leadership in organizations which use an agile development process. When people speak about agile it is common to hear terms like “no command and control,” “there is no one particular person in charge,” and “managers support rather than manage.” In this type of environment, where is there room for “leadership?” The workshop will look at leadership from several different perspectives and examine whether or not leadership is necessary. If it is necessary for leadership, where does it come from and how is it manifested? For project managers a thorough understanding of the realities of agile leadership is not a nicety, it is a necessity for success with agile projects. The workshop will consist of approximately equal parts presentation and hands on exercises.

Business Resilience Framework - A new approach for better projects and sustai...PMIUKChapter
In this session we will look at business resilience as a strategic capability, enabling organisations to navigate the increasingly complex and unpredictable market environment. We introduce Business Resilience Framework, a new comprehensive guidance for conducting business transformations triggered by external market conditions or internal organisational needs.
The framework presents a holistic approach for efficiently selecting and delivering business adaptation and transformation projects and programmes, sustainably and at pace.
The presentation is based on the material from a forthcoming book “Business Resilience: A Practical Guide to Sustained Progress Delivered at Pace” due to be published by Kogan Page in April this year. The authors took advantage of 150 years of collective experience working with the UK government, professional and accreditation bodies, consulting and training organisations, and clients in a variety of industries, including healthcare, telecommunications, automotive, software, and higher education to create a robust guidance for sustained organisational progress.
Key points:
Why does classic strategic planning fail in the VUCA world?
A new paradigm focused on Business Resilience
Business Resilience Framework and how it facilitates successful delivery of the right projects at the right pace
How can one use this approach in their own organisation?

Much like leaders in other sectors, leaders in healthcare organizations are now being called on to re-envision the roles they play in cultivating organizations that are faced with the need to develop new perspectives and new skills. AchieveGlobal's multi-phased, multi-level study examined how leadership within the healthcare industry must change to keep up with today's challenges.
Six leadership styles, complete with descriptions, behaviors, values, and quotes are illuminated. Each leadership style's strengths and applicability to healthcare are explored.

Governance in Healthcare: Leadership for Successful ImprovementHealth Catalyst
Successful outcomes improvement in healthcare requires strong leadership to make decisions, allocate resources, and prioritize initiatives. For improvement to succeed and endure, health systems can’t leave any part of leadership to chance. Instead, effective governance requires thoughtful, deliberate development. Otherwise, improvement initiatives stall or fail to launch, as stakeholders debate goals and strategies. To succeed, governance structure must be solid enough to withstand any challenges to improvement initiatives—from resource constraints to skeptics. Effective governance in healthcare operates with four guiding principles:
Engage the right stakeholders.
Establish a shared understanding of objectives.
Align incentives and rules of engagement.
Practice disciplined prioritization.

Emotional Intelligence - Understanding emotional resonance for leadership dev...Mick Lavin, MBA
Emotions help shape your current and future leadership development. Understanding how your own emotional state affects your behaviour and how this affects the emotional states of those around you can help you develop and become an effective leader, team member, and serve yourself better in many situations.
From Psychological point of view guidance and counselling are needed because no individual can succeed in all situations or activities of life. For example, all students cannot do well in science courses. Only those who have an aptitude for scientific studies can succeed. Success in every situation or activity of life is determined by certain abilities and skills. Researches in Psychology have revealed that there are found marked differences among individuals with regard to these abilities, aptitudes, interests and skills. Everyone cannot do everything with equal efficiency.
Emotional intelligence, definition models importance
Emotional Intelligence involves a combination of competencies which allow a person to a aware of, to understand, and to be in control of their own emotions, to recognize and understand the emotions of others, and to use this knowledge to foster their success and the success of others.

2. Introduction (cont.)
“More than prescriptions, medicine involves
communication, tolerance, flexibility, listening,
hard work and a passion for the practice.”
3. Introduction
• Emotional intelligence (EI) is one of the
essential skills for HC leader, helping:
– understanding, engage and motivate their
team
– In Conflict situation
– Find solutions to complex problems
• EI vs EQ
– EI refers broad range of competencies
– EQ refers to a quantification of skills in
practice, often used psychological assessment
tools
4. Introduction (cont.)
• EI derives from concept of “social intelligence”
– Identified by Thorndike in 1920
– Defined as “the ability to understand and mange
men and women, boys and girls to act wisely in
human relations.” (Thorndike, 1920)
– Gardner(1993) “social intelligence as one of the
seven intelligence domains in his theory of
multiple intelligence
5. Component of EI
• Self-awareness*
• Self regulation*
• Self motivation*
• Understanding one’s emotions*/Social
awareness**
• Managing relationships*/Social skills**
*Salovey and Mayer’s (1990) definition, E.I. Goleman (1996)
**Emotional Intelligence: A Core Competency for Health Care
Administrators (2002)
6. Key skills and competencies of
Leadership*
1. Use systems thinking to lead innovation and change.
2. Partner effectively with the communities
3. Negotiate relationships with partners and
stakeholders
4. Communicate effectively in crisis and high-risks
situations
5. Reflects and act upon personal leadership strengths
and weaknesses
6. Envision the public health future, and develop and
lead teams to create it
*National Public Health leadership Institute (PHLI)
8. Components of personal competence
• Psychological foundation of EI
• Characterized by knowing, understanding and
expressing oneself
• Categorized into
– Self-perception
– Self expression
– Stress management skills
– Decision making
• All are interacting to each other
9. Components of social competence
• Built on the personal competence
• Complex of social awareness and relationship
management
• To understand:
– the emotion of the group
– communicate effectively
– provide empathy
10. It is easier to
“Talk the EI
talk” than to
“walk the EI
walk”…
13. Conclusion
• The assessments of EI capture a picture of personal
competence and social competence skills.
• The definitely measuring emotional intelligence will
prove elusive-far more elusive than capturing the
interpersonal and organizational impacts on
situations in which those skills are underdeveloped
in leaders.
• Thus EI model serves as a helpful guide to creating
interactive leadership development programs that
build skills in key leadership personnel.
14. Recommendation
• Health care leaders should be trained on key
leadership skills and competency on basis of
– Emotional Intelligence
– Leadership style
– Workplace
– Relationship building
– Emotional monitoring
