core of India. Mirzapur, with its varied terrains and abundant biodiversity, offers an optimal
environment for investigating the changes in vegetation cover dynamics. Our study utilizes
advanced technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Remote sensing to
analyze the transformations that have taken place over the course of a decade.
The complex relationship between human activities and the environment has been the focus
of extensive research and worry. As the global community grapples with swift urbanization,
population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming
more evident. A crucial element of this impact is the alteration of vegetation cover, which plays a
significant role in maintaining the ecological equilibrium of our planet.Land serves as the foundation for all human activities and provides the necessary materials for
these activities. As the most crucial natural resource, its utilization by humans results in different
'Land uses,' which are determined by both human activities and the physical characteristics of the
land.
The utilization of land is impacted by human needs and environmental factors. In countries
like India, rapid population growth and the emphasis on extensive resource exploitation can lead
to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
and water managers, and urban planners, are interested in obtaining data on land use and cover
changes, conversion trends, and other related patterns. The spatial dimensions of land use and
cover support policymakers and scientists in making well-informed decisions, as alterations in
these patterns indicate shifts in economic and social conditions. Monitoring such changes with the
help of Advanced technologies like Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems is
crucial for coordinated efforts across different administrative levels. Advanced technologies like

Changes in vegetation cover refer to variations in the distribution, composition, and overall
structure of plant communities across different temporal and spatial scales. These changes can
occur natural.

Editor's Notes
According to the Pew Research Internet Project, in 2013 "59% of U.S. adults say they have looked online for information about a range of health topics in the past year. 35% of U.S. adults say they have gone online specifically to try to figure out what medical condition they or someone else might have.“
Consider all of the possibilities
Health sites
Drug sites
Commercial sites (drug stores, insurance companies, patient information, etc)
Nutrition sites
Complimentary or alternative medicine web sites
Blogs
Facebook sites
Entertainment sites (like Dr Oz)
Researchers found that when the FDA issues a drug safety warning, Google searches about that drug increase 82% on average in the following week. Wikipedia pages about the drug see a 175% increase in views on the day of the announcement.
[The paper, titled “Drug Safety in the Digital Age," primarily focused on how quickly these web sources were updated with information concerning drug labels and warnings. The study examined the Wikipedia pages for their safety warning content, as well as their timeliness in updating drug safety information, for 22 prescription drugs over a 2-year period.]
More than one third of the Wikipedia pages in the study were updated within 2 weeks of an FDA announcement, according to the paper. More prevalent diseases (defined as affecting more than 1 million people in the United States) were more likely to be updated in this time frame than the less prevalent conditions.
About 23% of the Wikipedia pages were updated more than 2 weeks after an FDA announcement, taking, on average, 42 days to post the new information. More than a third of the website's pages remained unchanged more than one year later, according to the study
So our patron comes in because they have seen something on the internet or on the news…. A small little bit of news.
We need to be aware of how that information comes into being….
As I am sure you are aware, scientific and medical research almost never gives us clear cut answers. They do not conduct a study and find the one true answer for everyone. If everyone, everywhere does this one thing their cardiovascular health will definitely improve. Instead, a scientist conducts a very complicated study and determines that something has a statistically significant positive impact on cardiovascular health in certain people under certain circumstances and more study should be done. This is not an awesome headline.
We are on a 24 hour news cycle with a lot of sound bite sized information and the market is competitive so it has be turned into an great headline. So information is condensed, simplified and sensationalized to grab our attention.
So the finding go from chemical in red wine has statistically significant impact on cardiovascular health to a glass of red wine every day is good for your heart.

HealthNewsReview.org can help you parse the strength of the data.
Health Literacy affects everyone’s lives.
Filing out forms at the doctors office so that they are accurate and the doctor knows the things they need to know
Understanding what the doctor is telling you –understanding that Hypertension is… high blood pressure. Angina is chest pain.
How to take prescription medication
Agreeing to treatment– when you sign the form at the hospital agreeing to a hysterectomy you should know that they are going to be removing your uterus.
According to US Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences:
Only 12% of US adults have proficient health literacy—
over 1/3rd of adults would have trouble with common health tasks, such as following directions on prescription medication or adhering to a childhood immunization schedule
14% below basic literacy– the ablitiy to tell what they could drink before a medical test
Age & education effect literacy levels… ages 65-75 only 5% are considered proficient and over age 75, only 1% are proficient
Health and the city on youtube
You all know how to evaluate a website so we won’t spend much time– but a reminder about how important it is on medical information websites. They are tricky. Even if they seem like reputable sources, sometimes they are not.
There is a simple acronym that I like to use to remember how to evaluate a website. The CRAAP test. It is easy to remember because you want to know if your site is CRAAP or not.
CRAAP stands for currency, relevancy, authority, accuracy and purpose.
Check the four corners, top and bottom of websites….
Check for dates and authority.
Especially check for purpose… a lot of websites are selling something, even when it seems like they aren’t
A lot of people get medical and medication information from sources like Dr. Oz.
Dr. Oz is indeed a doctor. He is on the faculty at Columbia Medical School.
Should be good information, but check the website carefully… if you look at the fine print at the bottom of the site you will see that it is
“for entertainment purposes only”
Be careful out there.
Let’s talk about this one because it comes up in the top 10 of google searches all the time.
It is run and curated by doctors—so that part is good.
This website makes a lot of money selling advertising to pharmaceutical companies. So they get paid by the click. There is nothing on this website that you can get to all of the content on in less than 6 clicks.
The results tend toward the alarmist. You are almost always told to see a doctor or ask about a medication.
No list of sponsors readily findable
It is much better since new leadership about a year ago and the dust-up in 2010 that exposed a quiz on their site about depression… could this anti-depressant help you?.... Sort of quiz. And no matter what answers you gave it told you to ask your doctor to give you this medication. They have gotten better since them, but still be wary.
This is the #1 “go-to” site for consumer health information
Vetted information
No ads
Easily searchable
In Spanish
Health Topics—Here you can find commonly searched medical conditions, complimentary medicine, topics for different demographic groups and health and wellness information
If you don’t see your topic use the a-z list… click on the letter*, scroll to your topic*, information and links are at your fingertips
Also note that there is information on prescription medications, over the counter medications, herbs and supplements
There are videos—of surgeries, tutorials, games and other loaded content
Medical encyclopedia
Links to easy to read materials, health information in multiple languages (46) and links to organizations that can have more information
There is advertising on Mayo Clinic—mostly for The Mayo Clinic and its services
This really is sponsored and run by the Mayo Clinic, so it is curated by doctors and health professionals
The information is reliable and not alarmist
Under patient care and health information there are many easy to use links.*
The Symptom Checker is nice feature you can look up a symptom you are having and it will try to narrow things down for you
Scroll to the bottom of the page and you get the health information links*
A lot of people are using or want to try using alternative, complementary and integrative health care– acupuncture, herbal medicine, and things like that.
National center for complementary and integrative health is a great resource.
Many claims made about herbs, supplements and other types of cures… this site follows the science.
Claims may be true and not yet proven… but this site follows the science.
Again it is vetted information, no advertising, reliable.
*Under Health info—there are topics a-z, herbs at a glance, information in Spanish and some great tutorials and videos about knowing the science and how to be an informed consumer
Association websites can also be a great resource. One has to be careful in evaluating them because some organizations are sponsored by pharmaceuticals or other advertisers and are not giving unbiased information. However, there are many good ones.
American Diabetes Association
American Cancer Association
National Cancer Institute
Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America
American Heart Association
US Department of Health and Human Services
And in true librarian form, the Medical Library Association has some helpful information on their website
If you go to the Patients tab*
You get a tutorial on how to find good health information
A wonderful “what did my doctor say
it breaks down the parts of medical terminology for you so that you can parse out the meaning
for example “ectomy”… it tells you that this is the end of the word and it means taking away by surgery. So an appendectomy is a surgery to take out your appendix
A link to a list of Top Health Websites according to the Medical Library Association as well as special link to cancer information
IHC libraries are open to the public as well as being available for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other staff.
We have access to a lot of medical journals.
If you get stuck on something– call us. We are happy to help you.
We have the same issue at our reference desk that you have… people saying they are sorry to bother us….. Bother us… it is why we are here.
Another thing you can do is gain some training or certification
The medical library association offers 2 certification courses
Courses are in two major sections
Administration and management courses, e.g. the essentials of providing health information service
Specialty consumer health courses; e.g. “Will Duct Tape Cure My Warts” and “From A(norexia) to Z(its): Providing Health Information to Teens”
The classes are mostly free. If you don’t want the certification, but still want to take the classes there is great information. Not a huge time investment.
Activities tend to be more professional in nature
Aimed at building and maintaining a career in medical librarianship
Another change going on in our country right now is a focus on …
Symptom checkers are a real boom to cyberchondriacs everywhere!
What we see in the library then is an emphasis in the kind of information we seek (vs medical information)
Choosemyplate—supertracker
can help you plan, analyze, and track how much to eat, physical activity, weight, personalize goals, journaling, etc
Health: “the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit; especially : freedom from physical disease or pain
Wellness : “the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal”
Is a wellness site commercial? Do they help you live in a state of health? Promote mental wellness?
I submit to you that we are trying to figure this out
