During an induction activity, students were asked to evaluate and assign marks to 6 cakes made by tutors to secretly different briefs, to demonstrate concepts around assessment, feedback, plagiarism, and collusion. Students discussed criteria and weightings for judging the cakes, then scored each cake as a group. This allowed students to experience the assessment process, bond with peers, and gain an appreciation of the effort involved in assessment and providing feedback. While a fun activity, it requires consideration for student dietary restrictions and those who may not connect with the cake analogy.
