Havana, Cuba began building railroads in the 1830s to connect the city to other parts of the country. By the mid-1800s, the expansion of trade and the city's population led officials to take down the walls surrounding Havana. As the city and economy grew through the sugar and cigar industries, Cuba fought for independence from Spain in the late 1800s with support from the United States.
