 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)… In Gwinnett County Public Schools, more
and more instructional activities can be enhanced when students bring their own
personal devices (cell phones, tablets, laptops, eReaders, etc.) to class. As you
consider the value of this experience and the opportunity for your child to use a
personal device at school, here are some things to know:
o GCPS encourages students to take advantage of the school system’s
BYOD policy, but participation is not required.
o Students should bring devices that they are comfortable using.
o With the variety of activities for which students might use a device in
class, no single device is likely to do it all.
o Some devices are better suited to various instructional activities than
others. You may want to look at options and limitations based on what
your child’s class is doing.
2. Platform
 We are a Google Education school, so syncing files between devices is an
important part of BYOD for me. With students working on their own devices,
having them synced to me makes me feel more confident. I have my students
share their work with me on Google Drive, and then I can check back on what
they are working on throughout. Furthermore, it is great having the ability to
see what student are doing during class while using devices, because of the
multitude of other things that they could be doing.
3. Accommodations
 For students who do not have devices, I will check out laptops or
Chromebooks for them to use in class. At FFMS, we also have a STEAM lab
with Chromebooks and five computer labs with iPads, so that the devices are
available for everyone.
 Additionally, when applicable, I will allow students to come in early to work
on a device or send them home with a hardcopy of the work.
4. Grouping
 I will have students work independently or with a partner. I have noticed that
my students work more efficiently with only one person compared to groups.
For BYOD, normally students will work alone. If they are doing something
for a project or review, then they will use their devices with a partner.
5. Apps for 7th grade Science:
BrainPop Video (all)
Discovery Go (all)
FlipGrid (all)
Google Drive (all)
Gene Screen (iphone)
iCell (iphone)
New Scientist (android)
Padlet (all)
Science 360 (all)
