INTRODUCTION
The processed data which originates as written document has to
be first converted to the readable input unit of the computer
called machine readable form.
It is transformed to appropriate internal code and stored in the
computer’s memory.
The processed data stored in the memory is send to an output
unit when commended by the program.
INPUT DEVICESIn computing, an input device is a peripheral (piece of computer hardware
equipment) used to provide data and control signals to an information processing
system such as a computer or information appliance.
Examples of input devices include Keyboards, Mouse, Light pen ,Touchscreens and
joysticks.
KEYBOARD
A 'keyboard' is a human interface device
which is represented as a layout of
buttons. Each button, or key, can be used
to either input a linguistic character to a
computer, or to call upon a particular
function of the computer. They act as
the main text entry interface for most
users.
Invented By: Christopher Latham Sholes
Invented In:1707
MOUSEA computer mouse is a pointing device (hand control) that
detects two-dimensional motion relative to a surface. This
motion is typically translated into the motion of a pointer on
a display, which allows a smooth control of the graphical user
interface.
Physically, a mouse consists of an object held in one's hand,
with one or more buttons. Mice often also feature other
elements, such as touch surfaces and "wheels", which enable
additional control and dimensional input.
Invented By: Douglas Engel Bart
Invented In:1960’s
LIGHT PEN
A light pen is a computer input device in the form of a light-sensitive wand used
in conjunction with a computer's CRT display.
The first light pen was created around 1955 as part of the Whirlwind project at
MIT.
During the 1960s light pens were common on graphics terminals such as the IBM
2250, and were also available for the IBM 3270 text-only terminal.

Invented In: 1938
A touchscreen is an important source of input devices and output devices layered on the
top of an electronic visual display of an information processing system.
A user can give input or control the information processing system through simple or
multi-touch gestures by touching the screen with a special stylus and/or one or more
fingers.
E.A. Johnson of the Royal Radar Establishment, Malvern described his work on capacitive
touchscreens in a short article published in 1965.
Invented By: E.A. Johnson
Invented In:1965
graphics tablet
A graphics tablet (also known as a digitizer, drawing tablet, digital drawing tablet,
pen tablet, or digital art board) is a computer input device that enables a user to
hand-draw images, animations and graphics, with a special pen-like stylus, similar
to the way a person draws images with a pencil and paper.
The first electronic handwriting device was the Telautograph, patented by Elisha
Gray 1888. Elisha Gray is best known as a contemporaneous inventor of the
telephone to Alexander Graham Bell.
Invented By: Elisha Gray
Invented In:1957
joystick
A joystick is an input device consisting of a stick that pivots on a base and reports its angle or
direction to the device it is controlling. A joystick, also known as the control column, is the
principal control device in the cockpit of many civilian and military aircraft, either as a center stick
or side-stick. It often has supplementary switches to control various aspects of the aircraft's flight.
The electrical two-axis joystick was invented by C. B. Mirick at the United States Naval Research
Laboratory (NRL) and patented in 1926 (U.S. Patent no. 1,597,416)".
microphone
A microphone, colloquially nicknamed mic or mike (/ˈmark/),is a
transducer that converts sound into an electrical signal.
In order to speak to larger groups of people, a need arose to
increase the volume of the human voice. The earliest devices used
to achieve this were acoustic megaphones. Some of the first
examples, from fifth century BC Greece, were theater masks with
horn-shaped mouth openings that acoustically amplified the voice
of actors in amphitheaters.
Invented By: David Edward Hughes
Invented In: 1870’s
optical character reader
(ocr)
Optical character recognition (also optical character reader,
OCR) is the mechanical or electronic conversion of images of
typed, handwritten or printed text into machine-encoded text,
whether from a scanned document, a photo of a document, a
scene-photo (for example the text on signs and billboards in a
landscape photo) or from subtitle text superimposed on an image
(for example from a television broadcast).
Invented By: Emanuel Goldberg
Invented In:1914
scanner
A Scanner is a device similar to a photocopier. A scanner
creates an electronic from of the printed image, which can
be later be manipulated, changed and modified according
to the requirements.
Types of Scanner:
(i). Hand-held Scanners
(ii). Flatbed Scanners
(iii). Drum Scanners
Invented By: Ray Kurzweil
Invented In:1957
Optical Mark Reader
(omr)
The Optical Mark Reader is a device the
"reads" pencil marks on NCS compatible scan
forms such as surveys or test answer forms. If
that all seems overly technical to you, just
think of it as the machine that checks multiple

Bar code reader
A barcode reader (or barcode scanner) is an electronic device that can read and output
printed barcodes to a computer. Like a flatbed scanner, it consist of a light source, a lens
and a light sensors translating optical impulses into electrical ones.
Additionally, nearly all barcode readers contain decoder circuitry analyzing the barcode’s
image data provided by the sensors and sending the barcode’s content to the scanner’s
output port.
Invented By: Wallace Flint
Invented In:1932
Bar code Reader
MICR
MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character
Recognition. It is a technology which allows
machines to read and process cheques enabling
thousands of cheque transactions in a short
time. MICR code is usually a nine digit code
comprising of some important information about
the transaction and the bank.

Smart card reader
These cards store data through magnetic stripes on the back of
these cards. Magnetic strips much more data per unit of space
than do printed characters or barcodes.
The enhanced version of cards with magnetics strips is called the
smart card The smart Card contains a microprocessors that retains
security and personal data in its memory at all times.
Invented By: Michel Ugon

Web cameras
A webcam is a video camera that feeds or streams its
image in real time to or through a computer to computer
network. When “captured” by the computer, the video
stream may be saved, viewed or sent on to other
networks via systems such as the internet, and email as
an attachment.
When sent to remote location, the video steam may be
saved, viewed or sent there.
Invented By: Paul Jardetzky
Invented In:1991
Web cameras
Biometrics sensors
Biometrics refers to metrics related to human characteristics. Biometrics
authentication (or realistic authentication)is used in computer science as
a form of identification and access control. It is also used to identify
individuals in groups that are under surveillance.
Invented By: Juan Vucetich
Invented In:1891
Latest Input Device
RINGThe Ring is a hardware device that resembles an
ordinary (if slightly chunky) ring, filled with sensors
and electronics to give it the ability to control devices
and render input. It can enable gesture controls, of the
kind you’d get with a Wii remote, for instance, as well
as text input by drawing letters in the air.
Google Glasses
Google Glass was an optical
head-mounted
display designed in the shape
of a pair of eyeglasses. It
was developed
by (previously Google with
the mission of producing
a ubiquitous
computer. Google Glass
displayed information in
a smartphone-like hands-free
format.

  • 7. MOUSEA computer mouse is a pointing device (hand control) that detects two-dimensional motion relative to a surface. This motion is typically translated into the motion of a pointer on a display, which allows a smooth control of the graphical user interface. Physically, a mouse consists of an object held in one's hand, with one or more buttons. Mice often also feature other elements, such as touch surfaces and "wheels", which enable additional control and dimensional input.

  • 11. A touchscreen is an important source of input devices and output devices layered on the top of an electronic visual display of an information processing system. A user can give input or control the information processing system through simple or multi-touch gestures by touching the screen with a special stylus and/or one or more fingers. E.A. Johnson of the Royal Radar Establishment, Malvern described his work on capacitive touchscreens in a short article published in 1965.

  • 15. joystick A joystick is an input device consisting of a stick that pivots on a base and reports its angle or direction to the device it is controlling. A joystick, also known as the control column, is the principal control device in the cockpit of many civilian and military aircraft, either as a center stick or side-stick. It often has supplementary switches to control various aspects of the aircraft's flight. The electrical two-axis joystick was invented by C. B. Mirick at the United States Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and patented in 1926 (U.S. Patent no. 1,597,416)".

  • 17. microphone A microphone, colloquially nicknamed mic or mike (/ˈmark/),is a transducer that converts sound into an electrical signal. In order to speak to larger groups of people, a need arose to increase the volume of the human voice. The earliest devices used to achieve this were acoustic megaphones. Some of the first examples, from fifth century BC Greece, were theater masks with horn-shaped mouth openings that acoustically amplified the voice of actors in amphitheaters.
