Embedded System
• The difference between embedded systems designers and software
engineers or IT technicians is the in-depth knowledge of the hardware
that embedded designers possess.
• Embedded designers must have knowledge of electronics to
effectively design embedded systems.

Arduino??
• A microcontroller board, contains
on-board power supply, USB port to
communicate with PC, and
an Atmel microcontroller chip.
• It simplify the process of creating any
control system by providing the standard
board that can be programmed and
connected to the system without the need
to any sophisticated PCB design
and implementation.
• It is an open source hardware, any one can
get the details of its design and modify
it or make his own one himself

Advantage of Using Arduino
• The advantage of using Arduino are
• Inexpensive
• Cross-platform
• Open-source
• Extensible software and hardware.
• Awesome community for Arduino.
The tutorials provided by the community and the various projects and blog
posts make the ride of learning arduino easy and so it has become an useful
utility for beginners.

Arduino IDE
• The open-source Arduino Software (IDE) makes it easy to write code
and upload it to the board. This software can be used with any
Arduino board.
• The current version of the Arduino IDE is v:2.1 and is compatible with
Windows, Linux and Mac OS. The Arduino IDE can be easily installed
from the website of Arduino.

void setup() {
// put your setup code here, to run once:
}
void loop() {
// put your main code here, to run repeatedly:

Bare minimum code
8/12/2023 ©FronTech Ltd. Contents from Internet for Knowledge Purpose. 28
• setup : It is called only when the Arduino is powered on or reset. It is
used to initialize variables and pin modes
• loop : The loop functions runs continuously till the device is powered
off. The main logic of the code goes here. Similar to while (1) for
micro-controller programming.

• A pin on arduino can be set as input or output by using pinMode
function.
• pinMode(13, OUTPUT); // sets pin 13 as output pin
• pinMode(13, INPUT); // sets pin 13 as input pin
PinMode
8/12/2023 ©FronTech Ltd. Contents from Internet for Knowledge Purpose. 30
• digitalWrite(13, LOW); // Makes the output voltage on pin 13 , 0V
• digitalWrite(13, HIGH); // Makes the output voltage on pin 13 , 5V
• int buttonState = digitalRead(2); // reads the value of pin 2 in
buttonState
Reading/writing digital values
8/12/2023 ©FronTech Ltd. Contents from Internet for Knowledge Purpose. 31
• What is analog ?
• It is continuous range of voltage values (not just 0 or 5V)
• Why convert to digital ?
• Because our microcontroller only understands digital.

Quantization the signal
8/12/2023 ©FronTech Ltd. Contents from Internet for Knowledge Purpose. 35
• The Arduino Uno board contains 6 pins for ADC
• 10-bit analog to digital converter
• This means that it will map input voltages between 0 and 5 volts into
integer values between 0 and 1023

• // These constants won't change. They're used to
give names to the pins used:
const int analogInPin = A0; // Analog input pin that
the potentiometer is attached to
const int analogOutPin = 9; // Analog output pin
that the LED is attached to
int sensorValue = 0; // value read from the pot
int outputValue = 0; // value output to the PWM
(analog out)
void setup() {
// initialize serial communications at 9600 bps:
Serial.begin(9600);
}
void loop() {
• // read the analog in value:
sensorValue = analogRead(analogInPin);
// map it to the range of the analog out:
outputValue = map(sensorValue, 0, 1023, 0, 255);
// change the analog out value:
analogWrite(analogOutPin, outputValue);
// print the results to the serial monitor:
Serial.print("sensor = " );
Serial.print(sensorValue);
Serial.print("t output = ");
Serial.println(outputValue);
// wait 2 milliseconds before the next loop
// for the analog-to-digital converter to settle
// after the last reading:
delay(2);
}

Example: Blinking LED
• There are many example codes in the arduino IDE itself. The following
is for blinking an LED which is analogous to the regular “hello world”
program.
• In the arduino UNO board there is an led at pin 13 which will be used
here. These pins varies for different arduino boards.

Example: Blinking LED
Sketch:
void setup()
{
// initialize digital pin LED_BUILTIN as an output.
pinMode(LED_BUILTIN, OUTPUT);
}
// the loop function runs over and over again forever
void loop()
{
digitalWrite(LED_BUILTIN, HIGH); // turn the LED on (HIGH is the voltage level)
delay(1000); // wait for a second
digitalWrite(LED_BUILTIN, LOW); // turn the LED off by making the voltage LOW
delay(1000); // wait for a second
}

Some precautions and tips:
● This is a 3.3V microcontroller board. Don’t input more than 3.3V into any GPIO pins
● Wi-Fi and Bluetooth feature draw about 300mA on average. Regular USB port can not deliver that
much of current. So, you would better plug in an external power source (battery) through VIN pin.
● Check if you soldered VIN pad before connecting any battery to VIN pin.
● It is okay to input up to 9V into VIN pin. But when you plug into pc by cable while keeping battery
connected, the battery voltage directly effects the computer. So make sure if your USB port of pc is
tolerant above 5V. Else, use buck converter to step down voltage into 5V
● Don’t expect much current delivery from 5V and 3.3V pin. They actually come from FTDI chip
which acts as uploader for ESP32. If you draw more than 40-50 mA from this pin, the chip resets
immediately send reset signal to ESP32. So, the board will keep restarting if you draw much current.

  • 39. Example: Blinking LED • There are many example codes in the arduino IDE itself. The following is for blinking an LED which is analogous to the regular “hello world” program. • In the arduino UNO board there is an led at pin 13 which will be used here. These pins varies for different arduino boards. 8/12/2023 39 ©FronTech Ltd. Contents from Internet for Knowledge Purpose.

  • 45. Some precautions and tips: ● This is a 3.3V microcontroller board. Don’t input more than 3.3V into any GPIO pins ● Wi-Fi and Bluetooth feature draw about 300mA on average. Regular USB port can not deliver that much of current. So, you would better plug in an external power source (battery) through VIN pin. ● Check if you soldered VIN pad before connecting any battery to VIN pin. ● It is okay to input up to 9V into VIN pin. But when you plug into pc by cable while keeping battery connected, the battery voltage directly effects the computer. So make sure if your USB port of pc is tolerant above 5V. Else, use buck converter to step down voltage into 5V ● Don’t expect much current delivery from 5V and 3.3V pin. They actually come from FTDI chip which acts as uploader for ESP32. If you draw more than 40-50 mA from this pin, the chip resets immediately send reset signal to ESP32. So, the board will keep restarting if you draw much current. 8/12/2023 ©FronTech Ltd.
