1. LEVEL: Intermediate (B1)
TYPE OF ACTIVITY: Group work
SKILLS: Speaking (pronunciation)
AIM
• To revise the pronunciation of the –ed verb endings.
LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL AREA
• Pronunciation of past simple endings of regular verbs.
• Revision of some regular verbs.
TASK
• Players must try to gather six cards of the same type.
PREPARATION AND MATERIALS
• Laminate a set of cards per group. Each pack contains 30 cards.
TIMING
20 minutes.
PROCEDURE
• Divide your class into groups of five students and give
each group a set of cards.
• This is a fast moving card activity. There are 30 cards
and on each of them there is a regular verb in past
simple.
• There are three types of cards depending on their -ed
pronunciation (10 cards in which –ed sounds /t/, 10 cards
in which –ed sounds /d/ and 10 cards in which –ed
sounds /Ǻd/).
Ǻ
• The aim of the game is to keep in your hands six cards of one type.
• One of the students shuffles the cards and deals them all.
• At the group’s command “pass”, all the students have to pass one card that they do
not want to keep to the student seated on their right. In this way, everyone discards
one card and gets a new one at the same time. Students have to decide quickly
whether they need it or not and try to get hold of the remaining matches. Students
continue “passing” until (at least) one of them gets six cards of the same type.
• When a student has six cards with the same –ed sound, he/she must slam the desk
and shout “Hands down!”
• The other player must check if the matching is correct or not. If it is so, the winner
scores one point, but if not, the game continues until someone gets the six-card
matching.
• The teacher must set a time limit and stop the game whenever appropriate. The
winner is the player with the highest final score.
2. • The teacher must walk around the class and make sure that students check the
winners' matchings correctly.
