H5P Structure Strip Tool
H5P's Structure Strip tool allows instructors to set up structures to guide students progress through
writing activities. An example of success and failure task based on the London redevelopment can
be viewed at https://h5p.org/content-types/structure-strip . In the example that you can build
below, the writing activity supports a comparison and contrast, point by point essay.
Create a Structure Strip Activity
1. Open Lumi.
2. Click on the H5P Editor Start link
3. Click on the + Create New H5P link
4. The H5P Select Content Type screen appears, scroll down the screen and click on the Structure
Strip icon
The Structure Strip editing screen appears.
Note: Instructors can include a video, image or an
audio clip with these exercises. To see how,
locate these instructions at the end of this
document.
5. In the Title text box, type a title.
6. Type a Task description for this activity

7. Starting at the first Section option, type Title into the text field
8. Add a hint to guide the
students through this section.
Note: This is optional.
9. Set the Weight of this section.
Note: The Weight determines the proportion of text
characters between each section. For example, an
Introduction and Conclusion sections may be set to a
weight of 1 while the other sections may be set to 5 to allow for 5 times the amount of text to be
entered in the sections set to a weight of 1.
10. In order to set the acceptable number of characters for each
section, expand the Behavioural settings section.
11. Enable “retry” is checked to allow learners the ability to adjust
their writing sections based on length.
12. It is recommended that the Slack or percentage of variation to the section length to the strip
Weight to the maximum of 50%. This allows for more flexibility in length for the students while
writing.
13. Set the Minimum text length for the smallest possible submission size for the total size of the
task.

14. Set the Maximum text length for the largest possible submission size for the total size of the
task.
15. Set the Feedback mode to While typing to allow students the ability to see the acceptable size
of each section or paragraph.
16. Choose a unique Background colour for this section.
17. Select a contrasting colour for the Text color to
ensure the text is readable.
18. Click on the + ADD SECTION button to add another writing field and continue adding Sections
until the task’s paragraph structure or strips are complete.

19. Click on the Save button

Add a video
1. Click on the Media drop down.
2. Choose the Media Type, Video.
Note: You can only have one kind of media for each activity.
3. Type a Title of the Video.
4. Click on the Video sources icon.
5. Paste the YouTube source of the video into the textbox. (https://youtu.be/Xu7joRKKvrM)
6. Click on the Insert button.
Note: An icon appears with the video host’s name.

Add an Audio Clip
1. Click on the Media drop down.
2. Choose the Type, Audio.
Note: You can only have one kind of media for each activity.
3. Type a Title of the Audio clip.
4. Click on the Source files icon.
5. Click on the Upload audio file icon.
6. Locate the audio (Mp3) file on your device and select it.
7. Choose the Player mode,
a. Minimalistic for a small icon
b. Full for a controllable player
Note: Do not check Enable
Autoplay. Check, Enable Controls.
c. Transparent for no visible player or icon.
Note: Try to avoid this as it does not allow learners the ability to start or stop the
audio.

Add an Image
1. Click on the Media drop down.
2. Choose which type of media (image, Video, Audio)
Note: You can only have one kind of media for each activity.
This example is an Image.
3. Click on the Add button.
4. Choose the image from your device.
5. Add a description of the picture in the Alternative text box.
6. Click on the Metadata button.
7. Enter copyright details, similar to this example.
8. Click on the Save metadata button.
