- The word Gumption first appeared in 1719 in Scotland, meaning “common sense or shrewdness”, but is of uncertain origin. The word may be connected with Middle English “gome” = attention, heed, notice (probably borrowed from a Scandinavian source around 1200) The meaning of initiative or enterprise was an early secondary sense, recorded about 1812. a gleam in your eye also a gleam in your eyes something that is thought about or planned but not yet started I remember when that invention was just a gleam in his eyes. Etymology: based on the literal meaning of a gleam in your eye (a sudden expression of an emotion in your eye)
