GST is a comprehensive indirect tax that will combine multiple taxes into a single tax applied to goods and services. It aims to create a uniform tax rate nationwide to make India a common market. GST is proposed as a dual system where both the central and state governments will simultaneously collect taxes on a common tax base. Goods and services will be taxed under CGST, SGST, and IGST at rates of 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%. Alcohol, petroleum products, electricity, and a few other items will be exempt from GST.
