2. are the stone remains of ancient organism or plants that were once
alive.
This is the primary basis in making the geologic timescale.
Classification of Fossils
Body Fossils
– are remains of parts of an organisms or plants.
- Ex. Bones, shells, woodly mammoths trapped in ice and insects trap
in amber,
Trace Fossils
- Records of the action of ancient organisms or plants.
- Ex. Footprints, stone stools, burrows and feces
5. A fish dies and it sinks to the bottom of a
lake
The fish rots and only the bones are left.
Layers of sediments such as sand ,silt and
mud cover the remains of the fish
Over a million years ago, this
sedimentary layers turn into a rock. The
bone matter is completely changed into
mineral matter. The fish is now a fossil
6. Over a million years ago this shells were covered by
sedimentary layer of rocks, became shell like stones and
formed a cliff. After many years , wind, rain, and ice
where down the layer resulted in the cropping of this
layer, exposing the shell like stone in the cliff.
8. This indicates that these two plate, South America
and Africa were once joined together.
This indicates that Glossopteris found in all Sothern
continents, show that they were once connected.
9. Therefore we conclude that continents were once
connected in a very large landmass called Pangaea.
During the time that Pangaea was still exist, fossils were
located in just one place and due to the reason that is still
not known for sure, the continents broke apart and began
to drift in opposite directions. The breaking apart of
Pangaea, causes the fossils to separate in different
locations.
