Study Abroad Program
Bunker Hill Community College
To Whom It May Concern:
Quite often, writing a letter of recommendation can feel like “extra work” for a teacher, especially
if there is not much to say about the student in question. Thankfully, in the case of Ami J. Malia,
it is an honor to be writing one for her. When Ami first told me of her desire to study abroad, I
got excited because I knew she would be the perfect ambassador to send for bridge-building
and peace-making overseas.
Ami is currently in my Education 140 class (Practicum in Instruction) and is also a participant in
BHCC’s Urban Teaching Program, which I coordinate. As part of the Education140 service-
learning/internship requirement, she assists in two of my ESL classes three hours a week. In
addition, Ami tutors at the Warren-Prescott School in Charlestown two afternoons a week,
something she does “beyond the call of duty” because she simply wants to learn more about
how middle schools operate. Principal Dominic Amara of the WP School describes Ami as a
dynamic, warm, patient, and a natural teacher and leader. As a returnee to school after having
had a career in the work world, Ami has had quite an impressive start at Bunker Hill.
One of Ami’s strengths I see in the ESL classes is her ability to get even the shyest students to
participate, through encouragement and showing enthusiasm for what they share in class.
Students genuinely feel comfortable with her, which may explain why they are risk-takers in the
ESL classes, generally unafraid to practice their English. Ami’s warm approach allows everyone
to relax. For my part, I know how challenging it is to work with (large) ESL classes of mixed
abilities, and I have Ami to thank for her assistance.
As a student, service-learner, and aspiring teacher, Ami has a lot to offer. I’m confident that
going abroad is an important next step that can only broaden her experience. A person of many
interests and strong communication skills, Ami is sure to thrive in another setting. I trust that she
will represent BHCC well and will come back with ideas and skills that can only serve her and
the larger community. I support Ami in this exciting venture!
I recommend Ami without any reservation. She is clearly one of the very best I know at BHCC.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Andy Reyes
