Architectural knowledge is increasingly regarded as an organizational asset that should be managed. Consequently, the architecture community has been researching and developing tools and techniques to support architectural knowledge management. Ideally, such tools and techniques support management of formal, structured architectural knowledge (e.g., architectural decision graphs); documented, unstructured architectural knowledge (e.g., text) and even tacit architectural knowledge (e.g., community building). Semantic wikis are capable of delivering this type of support for managing architectural knowledge. In this tutorial, the participants will learn how semantic wikis can be used to manage architectural knowledge. We will address the nature of architectural knowledge, and draw a distinction between tacit and explicit and between generic and organization-specific architectural knowledge. We will then look at what a semantic wiki is, and what its main differences and advantages are as compared to a regular wikis. This is followed by real life examples of different forms of architectural knowledge in Semantic MediaWiki, including models, principles, design decisions and their interrelations. We discuss the underlying knowledge model, how it can be registered in the wiki, and what types of inference can and cannot be performed from within the wiki. We finish the tutorial with an investigation of how a semantic architecture wiki can be linked to other repositories, such as modelling environments and even other semantic architecture wikis, thereby providing an effective means of reusing existing architectural knowledge.

The slides of the try out of my new talk "CQRS & event sourcing in the wild" - held at PHP Amersfoort in September 2016. CQRS & event sourcing are currently very popular topics in the PHP community. However, most blogs and talks focus on the theory, simple applications or introductions to one of the CQRS / event sourcing frameworks currently available for PHP, not necessarily the challenges of a production deployment. In this session we will try to bridge that gap and look at some of the issues that popped up during a real-world deployment of an event sourced application. We’ll discuss a few strategies to deal with these issues and how they would apply to current PHP event sourcing frameworks.

An increasing number of Software Architects realise that data is the most important asset of a system and start embracing the Data-Centric revolution (datacentricmanifesto.org) - setting data at the centre of their architecture and modelling applications as "visitors" to the data. At the same time, architects have also realised how reactive architectures (reactivemanifesto.org) facilitate the design of scalable, fault-tolerant and high performance systems. Few architects have yet realised how reactive and data-centric architectures are two sides of the same coin and as such should always go together. This presentation explains why reactive data-centric architecture is the future and how the OMG DDS Standard is uniquely positioned to support this paradigm shift. A series of case studies will highlight how the data-centric revolution is being applied in practice and what measurable benefits it is providing.

We built event-driven user interfaces for decades. What about bringing the same approach to mobile, web, and IoT backend applications? You have to understand how data flows and what is the propagation of changes, using reactive programming techniques. You can focus on the core functionalities to build and the relationships among the resources you use. Your application behaves similarly to a “spreadsheet”, where depending resources are updated automatically when something “happens”, and is decomposed into scalable microservices without having to manage the infrastructure. The resulting architecture is efficient and cost effective to run on AWS and managing availability, scalability and security becomes part of the implementation itself.

In the past few years we have been experiencing an amazing proliferation of mobile and embedded platforms. Contemporary developers are increasingly faced with the challenge of writing applications that can run on desktop, mobile (e.g. Android), and on low-cost embedded platforms (e.g. Raspberry-Pi and Beaglebone). This is causing a rejuvenated interest in the Java platform as the mean to achieve the holy grail of write-once and run-everywhere. With the availability of Java environments supporting almost any kind of device in several different form factors, the missing element to the picture is an effective way of enabling communication between them. Vortex Café is a pure Java implementation of the OMG Data Distribution Service (DDS) that enables seamless, efficient and timely data sharing across many-core machines, mobile and embedded devices. This presentation will (1) introduce the main abstractions provided by Vortex Café, (2) provide an overview of its architecture and explain how it exploits Staged Event Driven Architectures to optimize its runtime depending of the target hardware, (3) provide an overview of the typical performance delivered by Vortex Café, and (3) get you started developing distributed Java and Scala applications with Vortex Café.

Metascala is a tiny metacircular Java Virtual Machine (JVM) written in the Scala programming language. Metascala is barely 3000 lines of Scala, and is complete enough that it is able to interpret itself metacircularly. Being written in Scala and compiled to Java bytecode, the Metascala JVM requires a host JVM in order to run. The goal of Metascala is to create a platform to experiment with the JVM: a 3000 line JVM written in Scala is probably much more approachable than the 1,000,000 lines of C/C++ which make up HotSpot, the standard implementation, and more amenable to implementing fun features like continuations, isolates or value classes. The 3000 lines of code gives you: The bytecode interpreter, together with all the run-time data structures A stack-machine to SSA register-machine bytecode translator A custom heap, complete with a stop-the-world, copying garbage collector Implementations of parts of the JVM's native interface Although it is far from a complete implementation, Metascala already provides the ability to run untrusted bytecode securely (albeit slowly), since every operation which could potentially cause harm (including memory allocations and CPU usage) is virtualized and can be controlled. Ongoing work includes tightening of the security guarantees, improving compatibility and increasing performance. ENJOYIN

If you want to program a parallel computer, it obviously makes sense to start with a computational paradigm in which parallelism is the default (ie functional programming), rather than one in which computation is based on sequential flow of control (the imperative paradigm). And yet, and yet ... functional programmers have been singing this tune since the 1980s, but do not yet rule the world. In this talk I’ll say why I think parallelism is too complex a beast to be slain at one blow, and how we are going to be driven, willy-nilly, towards a world in which side effects are much more tightly controlled than now. I’ll sketch a whole range of ways of writing parallel program in a functional paradigm (implicit parallelism, transactional memory, data parallelism, DSLs for GPUs, distributed processes, etc, etc), illustrating with examples from the rapidly moving Haskell community, and identifying some of the challenges we need to tackle.

ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process. In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds. - These are slides of the talk given at IEEE International Conference on Software Testing Verification and Validation Workshop, ICSTW 2022.
