Greenpeace was established in 1970 as the Don't Make a Wave Committee to stop nuclear weapons testing. Canadian ecologist Bill Darnell coined the name "Greenpeace" to bind the group's concern for the environment and opposition to nuclear arms. In 1971, 12 activists sailed from Vancouver to Amchitka Island to protest nuclear testing, attracting international attention and helping to end such tests the following year. This success led to the formal creation of the Greenpeace Foundation.
