n the present study, the performance of the aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica for removing cadmium and lead from simulated wastewaters has been evaluated. Five kinetic models were fitted to the experimental data and compared. Previously, the effect of parameters such as the initial solution pH, contact time, and initial metal ion concentration on biosorption was investigated using a sorbent dose of 2 g l-1. The initial pH of the solution was found to have an optimum value in the range of 4.0-6.0. The equilibrium sorption capacity of cadmium and lead by Fontinalis antipyretica increased with the initial metal concentration.

The present study, Karisalangkani (Eclipta Alba) leaves were used for the adsorption of heavy metals like copper (Cu (II)) ions. The bio sorbent was characterized using SEM and BET analysis. The bio sorption experiments are conducted through batch system. The problem of environmental pollution is more expressed and more present by the development of the industry and the growth of the human population. Pollution of natural and wastewater is most often due to the release of heavy metals into watercourses. The greatest challenge for researchers is choosing the right biomass from a large number of low-cost biomaterials, and availability and price are very important selection factors. Microbial biomass, forestry waste and agroindustrial complexes are most frequently examined, as well as various macromolecules of natural origin. In this paper, barley straw that arises as agricultural waste product in barley production in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was used as a biosorbent. In the experimental part, physical and chemical characterization of barley straw was performed, after which the efficiency of removing Cd(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous solutions, using barley straw, and the influence of process parameters (pH value of aqueous solution, biosorbent size, interaction of metal ions) on the biosorption capacity were tested. It can be concluded that barley straw has good adsoption characteristics for the use as a low-cost natural sorbent for the removal of heavy metals from water.

Application of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) for the removal of toxic pollutants from water has been receiving increasing
attention in recent times. Photocatalysis using semiconductor oxides is one such AOP which is being investigated extensively for
the degradation of dyes in effluent water. This paper reports our findings on the sunlight induced photocatalytic removal of the
hazardous xanthene dye Rhodamine B from water, mediated by TiO2 and ‘platinum deposited TiO2’ (Pt/TiO2).Unlike in the case of
photocatalytic degradation of many organic pollutants which are driven by UV light, Rhodamine B can be removed in presence of
TiO2 even by visible light. Pt/TiO2 is ~5 times more active than TiO2 alone for the solar photocatalytic degradation of the dye,
which is attributed to extension of the absorption of light to the visible range and retardation of the recombination of
photogenerated electrons and holes. The dye itself can absorb visible light and act as a photo sensitizer to activate TiO2. The
effects of various parameters such as catalyst loading, concentration of the dye, pH, Pt concentration in Pt/TiO2, externallyadded
H2O2 etc on the adsorption and /or degradation of the dye are evaluated. The degradation of the dye proceeds through
intermediates and complete removal of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) is achieved many hours after the decolorisation of the dye.
The rate of degradation decreases beyond a critical concentration of the dye, possibly due to reduction in the path length of
photons in deeply colored solution. The higher degradation in alkaline pH is explained in terms of the ionization state of the
catalyst surface and the enhanced adsorption facilitated by the electrostatic attraction between the negatively charged catalyst
surface and the zwitter ionic form of the dye. H2O2, upto a critical concentration, accelerates the degradation. The observations are
critically analysed and suitable mechanism for the photocatalytic mineralisation of RhB is proposed.

Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is regularly used as a disinfectant or a bleaching agent because of its high efficiency against many bacteria and viruses present in seawater along with its cheaper cost. Now a days, with the increase in the environmental concerns concerning the use of chlorination for the disinfection or bleaching of treated water related to the formation of potentially harmful chloro-organic by products through reactions with natural organic matter (NOM), it is preferred to implement a process with environmentally friendly chemicals for water treatment processes. About This report aim to study the possibility of reducing the inorganic carbon present in seawater by oxidization reaction of seawater with TiO2 and H2O2. Investigated and a comparison between thin film method and suspension method with a reactor system in conjunction with a light concentrating system has been done.
UNRAVELLING THE MENTAL HEALTH LANDSCAPE: EXPLORING DEPRESSION AND ASSOCIATED ...indexPub
Introduction: The prevalence of depression and its correlates in Bangladeshi rural university students have been rarely investigated. We draw a literature review, a cross-sectional study and analysis of the rural students’ depression natures and mechanisms that influence their academic performance and health and well-being. Methods: A cross-sectional research was conducted during the period august 2019 to January 2020 in a university. We employed Beck Depression Inventory scale to collect data from 200 undergraduate and graduate students. Data were analysed using chi-square association test and ordinal logistic regression. Results: We discovered that mild to severe depression affected 60% of rural students [mild (16%), borderline (10%), moderate (12%), severe (11.5%), and extreme (10.5%)]. Family expectations, smoking, bad academic achievement, inability to enroll in a particular program, and inadequate household finances were significant risk factors for depression. When it comes to depression, male students scored noticeably higher than female pupils. The decreased depression was linked to both strong household economics and intellectual achievement. Conclusions: The intricate interactions among the risk factors influence the character and processes of depression in rural students.

Purpose – The purpose of this research is to undertake a bibliometric analysis of working capital management. The study examines papers from time period 1974-2023and performed performance analysis, co-citation analysis, bibliographic coupling and scientific mapping. Design/methodology/approach – The study examines 174 articles retrieved from the Scopus database using bibliometric analysis, performance analysis and thematic clustering. The study looked at the scientific productivity of papers, prolific authors, most influencing papers, institutions and nations, keyword co-occurrence, thematic mapping, co-citations and authorship and country collaborations. VOSviewer was as a tool in the research to conduct the performance analysis and thematic clustering.The watchword "Working Capital Management" was used to include only English-language articles. Findings – The most productive year was 2022 with 26 publications. Martínez and García- are the most protuberant authors with 708 citations. The findings of the study shows that the most influential institutions are ‘The Department of Management and Finance, Faculty of Economy andBusiness and Department of Management and Finance, Faculty of Economics and Business, The University of Murcia, Spain with 381 & 297 citations. Among,thecountry analysis,Spain with 744 citations stands first of all other nations for publication on Working Capital Management. Kärri is the most productive author with 7 documents. Despite being recognised as drivers of innovative development, Micro, Small, and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) frequently confront resource limitations. Therefore, enhancing the ecosystem is contingent on the entrepreneurs’ social capital, which is crucial for the success of MSMEs. This study applies the social capital approach to analyse the entrepreneurial ecosystem enrichment and its impact on the innovation process of cosmetics MSMEs. The qualitative case study of six cosmetic manufacturing MSMEs explores that social capital is a multifaceted asset to MSMEs. Through an in-depth thematic analysis of three dimensions of social capital (structural, relational, and cognitive), this study states that the innovation process is supported by the synergistic transformation of one dimension of social capital into another. Entrepreneurs sharing the common norms, rules, and language enrich their cognitive as well as relational aspects of ecosystem. The study suggests that as network ties, trust, and norms collectively influence innovation in firms, hence, social capital needs to be studied with its contextualization in the ecosystem.

Data is collected through a questionnaire from employees in both public (SBI) and private banks (HDFC Bank) who work in HR departments or are involved in HR activities. The Likert scale is utilized in the questionnaire to measure participant perceptions of HRM practices. The study utilizes two statistical tools: Neural Network and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). The findings of the study highlight the significance of promotion and transfer policies, considered paramount in influencing organizational performance in both public and private banks. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of training and development initiatives in enhancing employee skills and competencies. Clear and effective communication within HR policies is identified as pivotal in improving organizational performance. Lastly, aligning HRM practices with sector-specific goals is recognized as a significant contributor to improved employee satisfaction and overall performance in the banking sector. In this research were used two questionnaires Empathy Formative questionnaire and Friendship Quality Scale. The aim of this study is to see the relationship between empathy and friendship quality among adolescent, to find out if there are gender differences in empathy and friendship quality, and to see if there are any differences between younger and older students on examined variables. This research was done with 65 high school students. Age of the students were 15 to 17 years old. Results show that there is a correlation between empathy and friendship quality. The results of t test show that there are not significant differences between females and males on variable empathy. Girls and boys have significant difference in friendship quality in Kosovo. There are no significant differences between older students and younger students in the level of empathy and also there are no significant differences between older students and younger students in the level of friendship quality.

Introduction: among the most worrying problems in recent years are low self-esteem, family and friends problems, anxiety, stress, and depression, which are taking on alarming proportions in students and young people in general. Purpose: the study is a prediction, which focuses on analyzing and evaluating students' self-esteem and level of depression. Methodology: the population is 332 students (13-15 years old) in high schools in the Gjakova region. The study describes the analysis, classification, and evaluation of the collected data by doing the analysis and real examination of the findings. Results: in terms of gender there is no significant difference in self-esteem, while in depression there is a significant difference. The level of depression is higher in women (11.9) than in men (9.5). Economic status shows that students with employed fathers have lower depression (6.77) compared to those with unemployed fathers (10.80). Conclusions: The level of depression and self-esteem and parental reflection affect students. A link has been found between economic status and emotional problems and student behavior. To prevent it, the psychological service in schools should function, and together with families and the community should be as close as possible to the problems of students.

The society with diverse structural and ideological influences, assumes its role in relation to behavior, attitude, belief and relations. The impact can be seen in every society globally, however the western nations have adjusted their social policies to suit these transformations, whereas nations in developing phase have failed to establish suitable systems. In Kosovo, the allocation of funds for mental health services remains insufficient, even though mental health disorders account for 12.3% of overall illnesses and 30.8% of work incapacities! The objective of this study is to examine the impact of society on the decline and recovery of individuals with schizophrenia. The study employs both qualitative and quantitative methods to provide a descriptive-analytical. A study was conducted in four municipalities of Kosovo, using individuals with schizophrenia from psychiatric institutions as subjects along with their caregivers/family members . The research found that social factors greatly contribute to the worsening of schizophrenia patients' condition. The presence of schizophrenia is evident through a higher likelihood of having a low level of education, high unemployment rates, and engaging in harmful behaviors like tobacco and alcohol use, as well as physical inactivity. Significant correlations have been observed in the subscales of positive and negative symptoms using the Self-Report PNS-Q questionnaires. It is crucial for individuals with schizophrenia to have a carefully designed strategy in place, developed in partnership with professionals from various relevant fields such as social protection, psychiatric medical services, education, and social integration plans.

The global prevalence of heart disease indicates a major public health issue. It causes shortness of breath, weakness, and swollen ankles. Early heart disease diagnosis is difficult with current approaches. Hence, a better heart disease detection tool is needed. Treatment requires more than just diagnosis. Risk classification is critical for accurate diagnosis and treatment. In this analysis, a novel cardiovascular disease (CVD) detection paradigm using machine learning (ML) and risk classification based on a weighted fuzzy system is proposed. The system is developed based on ML algorithms such as artificial neural network (ANN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and uses standard feature selection techniques knowns as Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Furthermore, the cross-validation method has been used for learning the best practices of model assessment and for hyperparameter tuning. The accuracy-based performance measuring metrics are used for the assessment of the performances of the classifiers. Finally, the outcomes revealed that the proposed model achieved an accuracy of 94.01% which is higher than another conventional model developed in this domain. Additionally, the proposed system can easily be implemented in healthcare for the identification of heart disease.

Narrowing of the arteries caused by atherosclerosis reduces blood flow to the heart, which results shows ischemia, angina pectoris, cerebral strokes, and other coronary artery disease signs and symptoms. Curvature is seen in blood vessels at various locations. The stenotic surface provides an additional curvature and the point of maximum shear which varies with the cross-section. A cylindrical form of the Navier-Stokes equations in polar coordinate system have been extended to include dynamic curvature along the axial direction. The blood flow behavior of taking different values of blood parameters like viscosity, the radius of the artery, and the thickness of the stenosis has been studied with and without curvature by using an extended blood flow model with dynamic curvature. Moreover, the aspects of blood flow, such as dynamic curvature velocity profile, volumetric flow rate, pressure drop, and shear stress, have been studied in relation to blood flow around curved arteries with stenosis, variations in the radii of the artery, thickness of the stenosis, and viscosity. The information may reveal that by increasing the values of curvature, viscosity, and thickness of stenosis, velocity, and volumetric flow rate can be quickly reduced. Increasing the curvature, viscosity, and thickness of stenosis also results in an increase in shear stress and a pressure drop. The presence of curved stenotic arteries has a significant impact on the flow parameters, and it is crucial to know about these dynamics in order to study the cardiovascular system.

This study was conducted to identify the influence of computer technology in blended learning on the achievement in the Principles of Accounting subject through of self-directed learning. The research also assessed the relationship of the elements of blended learning on student achievement. Despite the encouragement by the Ministry of Education for the use of Computer Technology In Education, there is a lack of research on a measurable and testable model of the influence of computer technology. In reality, various aspects such as schools, teachers, content, and technology exist to provide and utilize computer technology through learning in Malaysia. A quantitative study using a correlational design was conducted on 400 Form Four students in secondary schools in the Southern Zone of Malaysia, namely in the states of Johor, Melaka, and Negeri Sembilan, to identify the influence of computer technology in blended learning on achievement. Data were collected using adapted and modified questionnaires from previous studies. Descriptive data analysis was performed using SPSS version 28, while inferential analysis was conducted using the Smart PLS analysis technique. Smart PLS version 4.0 software was utilized to test the mediator relationships in the study. The results of the study showed high minimum scores for blended learning through computer technology and self-directed learning, as well as achievement. The influence of blended learning elements also had a significant relationship with student achievement in the Principles of Accounting subject. This study is expected to contribute to the effectiveness of blended learning through information technology on the achievement in the Principles of Accounting subject by enhancing self- directed learning among students. The development of this conceptual model is hoped to serve as a guide for policymakers, the Ministry of Education, teachers, students, and other stakeholders in ensuring that blended learning practices can be implemented more effectively. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality. Early identification of individuals at risk of heart disease is crucial for effective preventive interventions. To improve the prediction accuracy, this paper proposed Heart Disease Prediction using the Density-Based Ordering of Clustering Objects (DBOCO) framework. The Dataset has been pre-processed using Weighted Transform K-Means Clustering (WTKMC). Features are selected using Ensemble Feature Selection (EFS) with a Weighted Binary Bat Algorithm (WBBAT) used to ensure that the emphasis is on the most relevant predictors. Finally, the prediction has been done using the Density-Based Ordering of Clustering method, which has been designed exclusively for cardiovascular disease prediction. DBOCO, a density-based clustering approach, effectively finds dense clusters within data, allowing for the inherent overlap in cardiovascular risk variables. DBOCO captures complicated patterns by detecting these overlapping clusters, improving the accuracy of disease prediction models. The proposed approach has been verified with heart disease datasets, displaying higher performance than traditional methods. This study marks a substantial leap in predicting cardiovascular disease providing a comprehensive and dependable framework for early identification and preventive concern.

By identifying potential causes and proposing targeted recommendations, this study aims to help the responsible authorities make informed decisions to prevent such problems in the future and ensure the durability of road infrastructure. Premature cracking and rutting are common problems in pavements that can compromise their durability and safety. The use of specific additives in asphalt concrete can help prevent these deficiencies. The use of ZQ1 additive alone can lead to premature cracking in pavements, while PR FLEX 20 additive can increase the risk of rutting. However, a judicious combination of the two additives, with specific percentages of 2% for ZQ1 and 5% for PR FLEX 20, can prevent these shortcomings, improve pavement durability and optimize the mechanical properties of high-modulus asphalt concrete (BBME). In addition, this approach offers a promising solution for improving pavement durability and performance over time, opening the door to further studies to optimize the use of this additive combination in field applications.

Micro RNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs molecules having approximately 18-25 nucleotides, they are present in both plants and animals genomes. MiRNAs have diverse spatial expression patterns and regulate various developmental metabolisms, stress responses and other physiological processes. The dynamic gene expression playing major roles in phenotypic differences in organisms are believed to be controlled by miRNAs. Mutations in regions of regulatory factors, such as miRNA genes or transcription factors (TF) necessitated by dynamic environmental factors or pathogen infections, have tremendous effects on structure and expression of genes. The resultant novel gene products presents potential explanations for constant evolving desirable traits that have long been bred using conventional means, biotechnology or genetic engineering. Rice grain quality, yield, disease tolerance, climate-resilience and palatability properties are not exceptional to miRN Asmutations effects. There are new insights courtesy of high-throughput sequencing and improved proteomic techniques that organisms’ complexity and adaptations are highly contributed by miRNAs containing regulatory networks. This article aims to expound on how rice miRNAs could be driving evolution of traits and highlight the latest miRNA research progress. Moreover, the review accentuates miRNAs grey areas to be addressed and gives recommendations for further studies.

The objective of this work is to contribute to valorization de Nephelium lappaceum by the characterization of kinetics of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum. The seeds were dehydrated until a constant mass respectively in a drying oven and a microwawe oven. The temperatures and the powers of drying are respectively: 50, 60 and 70°C and 140, 280 and 420 W. The results show that the curves of drying of seeds of Nephelium lappaceum do not present a phase of constant kinetics. The coefficients of diffusion vary between 2.09.10-8 to 2.98. 10-8m-2/s in the interval of 50°C at 70°C and between 4.83×10-07 at 9.04×10-07 m-8/s for the powers going of 140 W with 420 W the relation between Arrhenius and a value of energy of activation of 16.49 kJ. mol-1 expressed the effect of the temperature on effective diffusivity.

Abstract
In the present study, the performance of the aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica for removing cadmium
and lead from simulated wastewaters has been evaluated. Five kinetic models were fitted to the
experimental data and compared. Previously, the effect of parameters such as the initial solution pH,
contact time, and initial metal ion concentration on biosorption was investigated using a sorbent dose of 2
g l-1. The initial pH of the solution was found to have an optimum value in the range of 4.0-6.0. The
equilibrium sorption capacity of cadmium and lead by Fontinalis antipyretica increased with the initial metal
concentration. For an initial metal concentration of 10 mg l-1, the uptake capacity of the moss, at equilibrium,
is the same for both metals (4.8 mg g-1). Nevertheless, when the initial concentration increases up to 100
mg l-1, the uptake of Pb(II) is higher than 78%. The pseudo-second order biosorption kinetics provided the
better correlation with the experimental data (R2 0.999).

1. INTRODUCTION
Cadmium and lead pollution have been recognized as potential risks to the air, soil, and
water [1], [2]. Exposure to excessive levels of these metals in occupational and residential
settings can lead to adverse health effects including impaired intellectual development,
respiratory issues, cancer, renal disturbances, bone lesions, and hypertension in both
children and adults [3]. Lead toxicity, in particular, has been extensively documented and
proven to be highly toxic to humans when present at high concentrations [4]. Adverse
health effects associated with Cd exposure are well documented and include lung
insufficiency, cancer, renal disturbances, bone lesions, and hypertension in humans [5].
Conventional methods, such as chemical precipitation, coagulation, and complexation,
are commonly employed for the removal of metal ions from aqueous effluents. However,
these traditional approaches often fail to achieve the limits set by national and
international regulatory agencies [6]. Moreover, techniques such as ion exchange,
activated carbon adsorption, and electrolytic removal are prohibitively expensive because
of the high capital and regeneration costs associated with activated carbon and ion-
exchange resins [7]. As a result, there is growing interest in exploring low-cost adsorbents
that offer an economically viable alternative.
Bryophytes, including mosses, have gained recognition for their unique ability to exhibit
both sensitivity and tolerance to a wide range of heavy metals [8,9]. These plants can
directly absorb dissolved contaminants throughout their entire plant body because they
lack the selective barriers found in the roots of vascular plants [10]. The absence of a

cuticle in bryophytes enhances direct access of soluble metals to the living cytoplasm in
their photosynthetic tissues. Due to these characteristics, combined with their abundance
in rivers across the northern region of Portugal, aquatic mosses have emerged as
potential biosorbents for the removal of heavy metals from polluted water [11].
In conclusion, the risks associated with cadmium and lead pollution necessitate effective
strategies for their removal and recovery. Traditional methods often fall short of meeting
regulatory standards, whereas more advanced techniques are financially impractical. The
unique attributes of bryophytes, such as sensitivity, tolerance, and direct metal absorption
capabilities, make them promising candidates for heavy metal removal. The availability
of aquatic mosses in the rivers of northern Portugal further supports their potential use as
low-cost biosorbents. Exploring and harnessing the potential of aquatic mosses for heavy
metal removal can pave the way for the development of efficient, cost-effective, and
environmentally friendly wastewater treatment approaches.
2. MATERIALS AND METHODS
The aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica has been picked out in the Selho River, at Aldão,
a tributary of the Ave River in Northern Portugal (Fig. 1). The samples were firstly rinsed
with river water and then with distilled water in the laboratory, selecting only the green
parts of the plants (Fig. 2). The material was dried in an oven at 70ºC for 24 h and then
ground in a RETSCH ZM 100 ultra-centrifugal mill at 1400 rpm for approximately 90
seconds. The fraction with particle size between 150 m - 300 m was selected for the
study.

Batch equilibrium sorption experiments (Fig. 3) were performed in duplicate in 100 mL
Erlenmeyer flasks containing 50 mL of metal-containing solution of a known initial
concentration into which a pre-weighted amount of dry biomass was added.

The suspensions were mildly agitated for 300 min on a rotary shaking machine at 140
rpm. Other operating conditions: initial metal ion concentration, 10 and 100 mg L-1; moss
dosage, 2 g L-1; contact time, 24 h; temperature, 20ºC. Kinetic experiments were
performed in duplicate at a constant temperature of 20ºC, metal concentrations of 10 and
100 mg L-1. Taking into account the results of preliminary experiments, the initial working
pH was adjusted in the range 5.0-5.2 by adding 0.1 M H2SO4 or 0.1 M NaOH, as required.
At fixed time intervals (3, 6, 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180 and 300 min) one flask was taken
out. Then, the solution was filtered, and concentrations of metal were measured using the
Atomic Absorption technique using acetylene-air flame (AAS, VARIAN SPECTRA, model
S -1) were obtained from Merck.
3. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION
Several parameters related to the selected metal, the aqueous medium and the material
characteristics could influence the metal removal by mosses. Thus, parameters such as
contact time, moss dosage, initial metal concentration, temperature, pH, concentration of
Ca2+ and nature of the metal salt were studied for the effective removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II)
by the aquatic moss Fontinalis antipyretica; however, some results are not showed in this
paper.

From Cd2+ and Pb2+ sorption studies, it was evident that pH values equal or higher 4.0
led to higher metal uptake for both metals. At pH 3.0, some metal uptake (20% for Cd
and 40% for Pb); according to [12] this may be due to the presence of sulphonate groups
that are dissociated around this pH value. This relation of dependence between pH
solution and biosorption, suggest that aquatic mosses can be developed as multi-use
sorption material. As observed, metal removal is greatly reduced al lower pH, which
promote an easy release of metal ions by simple pH adjustment. Therefore, in the
subsequent work, experiments were carried out at pH 5.0 - 5.2.
Preliminary kinetic tests were carried out at pH 5.0, until maximum metal uptake was
achieved, and metal precipitation was avoided. The initial metal concentration in solution
was 100 mg L-1, and the moss dosage 2 g L-1. Results evidencing the cadmium and lead
sorption dependence on the contact time are plotted in Fig 4. Curves show a similar shape
for both metals, characterized by a strong increase in removal capacity by mosses during
the first 10 minutes and a subsequent slower phase whose contribution to the total metal
uptake is relatively small.

At the initial stage was observed a faster removal of ions due to a driving force higher and
higher affinity active sites are first occupied. After that, metal concentration decreases
and remaining active sites with lower affinities, which are occupied slowly.
The sorption process was fast, and the equilibrium attained in less than 2 h. The short
time required to attain the equilibrium is a good indicator of the moss potential for a fast
removal of metal ions in solution, and it will allow using smaller reactor volumes.

Effect of the initial metal concentration
For 300 min of contact time, 50 mL of metal solution with concentration in the range 10 –
100 mg L-1 was shaken with 100 mg biosorbent at constant temperature (20ºC) and pH
(5.0 - 5.2). Table 1 shows the results of the sorption capacity and rate constants. The first

The initial metal concentration provides an important driving force to overcome all mass
transfer resistances involving the interface liquid/solid, and leads to high metal removal.
The equilibrium lead uptake values at different initial metal ion concentrations are given
in Table 1 and is clear that practically all lead (≈ 98%) is bound to the biosorbent,
regardless the initial concentration in solution.
The affinity of the biosorbent to cadmium is lower and the uptake percentage markedly
decreases (from 83.8 to 47.4%) when the initial metal concentration in solution increases
from 10 to 100 mg L-1. At lower concentrations, the ratio of initial number of metal ions
and the available sorption sites is low and subsequently the biosorption percentage
becomes independent of initial concentration.
For higher concentrations, however, the available sites of biosorption become fewer and
consequently the removal of metallic ions depends on the initial concentration. So, the
cleansing yield can be improved by diluting the effluent containing high metal ion
concentrations.

The lead uptake rate is almost independent on the initial concentration and averages
13.4x10-3 min-1. On the other hand, the biosorption of cadmium is slower and the uptake
rate decreases by about one third as the initial concentration increases from 10 to 100
mg L-1.
The high removal capacities observed for the lower initial metal concentrations in solution
(Table 1) are explained by the finite number of adsorption sites at the particles surface.
However, lead uptake is insensitive to this fact due to its high electronegativity, which
increases the affinity to the different functional groups.

Biosorption Kinetic Models

The correlation coefficients (higher than 0.999) indicate a good compliance of the
experimental data with the proposed pseudo-second order kinetic model.

The kinetic constant, k , decreased from 4.20x10-2 to 1.00x10-2 g mg-1 min-1 as the initial
cadmium concentration increased from 10 to 100 mg l-1 and a similar behaviour was
observed for lead (k decreased from 0.233 to 7.00x10-3 g mg-1 min-1, as the initial lead
concentration increased from 10 to 100 mg l-1). The values of the initial sorption rates, h,
were determined from the intercepts of the straight lines plotted in Fig. 2. The initial
sorption rate increased with the initial metal concentration both for cadmium and lead.
This behaviour is opposite to the observed by [13] on the sorption of copper, nickel and
lead onto Sphagnum moss peat.
Model performance; a brief and simplistic analysis, comparing the regression coefficients
(R2) for the different models of each metal, allows concluded, although generically all
values are high (>0.90), the higher correspond to the pseudo-second order model.
So, when the models fit the data with sensible values, the suitable procedure is to use an
F-test to decide which model to accept. For a level of probability of 95% and 10 degrees
of freedom for the numerator and for the denominator, the values of Fcal, for each pair and
for all models analysed, the pseudo-second order model is statistically more accurate
than the others models for the biosorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by the aquatic moss, except
for cadmium at lower concentration (10 mg L-1), where the Lagergren model is better.
However, the Lagergren model is not statistically more accurate than Ritchie model, a
second order model (Fcal < 2.98). The equilibrium sorption capacities predicted by the
best model, for initial cadmium/lead concentrations of 10 and 100 mg L-1, are 0.041/0.023
mmol g-1 and 0.246/0.238 mmol g-1, respectively. The better fit of the pseudo-second
order model therefore indicates that a 1:2 binding stoichiometry applies; that is, one
divalent metal ion binds to two monovalent binding active sites. It is perfectly reasonable
that a divalent metal would bind to two carboxyl groups as showed by Schiewer and Wong
(1999), in experiments with brown algae. However, it isn’t possible to conclude that, in all
the time range, the biosorption reaction is the rate-limiting step. This conclusion may not
be valid because a good model fit does not necessarily indicate the real nature of the
rate-limiting step. In many other biosorption cases, diffusion rather than the chemical
reaction was the rate-limiting step, at least in the initial instants.
