The Great Lakes are a collection of five freshwater lakes located in northeastern North America along the Canada-US border. They include Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario and cover an area of over 208,000 square kilometers. Indigenous peoples like the Iroquois, Algonquian, and others lived around the lakes before European settlement. The first European to explore the lakes was the French explorer Sieur de la Salle in 1679. The Great Lakes contain 21% of the world's surface fresh water and are home to over 35,000 islands. Major cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Toronto line their shores.

They are the largest group of freshwater lakes on the Earth. The surface
of them all the together is 208,601 square kilometres, almost the half of
Spain.

Before the european

The Great Lakes hold 21 % of the worlds fresh water.
They are called the Third Coast or the Fresh Coast in reference
to its fresh water.
Dispersed throughout the Great Lakes are 35,000 islands. Some
of them are large enough to have their own lakes inside.
Their large size increases the risk of water travel. Hundreds of
ships have met their end on the lakes.
